The 2026 Ford Mustang GT is the lower-priced starting point in the manufacturer listings reviewed, and it pairs a 5.0-liter V8 with a standard six-speed manual option. The gas-powered Dodge Charger Sixpack R/T counters with standard all-wheel drive, a 420-hp twin-turbo inline-six and a hatchback-style cargo area that is far more useful for bulky loads. The higher-output Charger Sixpack Scat Pack makes 550 hp, but it is a separate, more expensive trim—not a direct price match for the R/T.
There is no evidence here to name a five-year cost winner. Fuel economy, insurance, depreciation and service costs need to be compared using the exact cars, local prices and a buyer’s driving assumptions.

The R/T’s acceleration times and fuel-economy figure are Dodge claims; Ford’s output figures are manufacturer specifications. They are not results from a same-day, same-condition test of both cars. Peak horsepower alone also cannot settle which car feels quicker or more engaging: gearing, traction, transmission, tires and the kind of driving matter.
What the comparison test says about driving feel
An AP-published Edmunds comparison favored the Mustang for handling and braking impressions, described its steering as sharper and preferred the V8 sound. The same outlet found the Charger comfortable and composed for cruising and errands, while characterizing its steering as light and its braking distances as lengthy. These are the outlet’s judgments about the vehicles it evaluated, not universal measurements or a substitute for a matched instrumented test.
Which car is more practical?
Charger: easier access and bulky cargo
Dodge offers the 2026 Charger in two- and four-door forms. Its hidden-hatch layout provides 37.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, according to Dodge. The company also compares the new model’s cargo volume with the outgoing Charger; those increases are manufacturer comparisons, not independent measurements against the Mustang.

AP’s Edmunds comparison found the Charger hatch easier to load with bulky items and its rear quarters more useful than the Mustang’s. That is a qualitative assessment, not a standardized luggage test.
Mustang: coupe packaging with a folding rear bench
The Mustang GT Fastback has four seats and a 50/50 split-folding rear bench. The rear seats provide occasional passenger or extra-cargo flexibility, but AP’s Edmunds comparison describes the rear quarters as tighter and the cargo area as limited relative to the Charger. Buyers who regularly carry adults in back or load large objects should try their own passengers and gear before choosing.
AWD is useful, but it does not solve every weather problem
The Charger’s standard AWD is a hardware advantage for getting power to the road in slippery conditions. It does not guarantee shorter stopping distances, and it does not replace appropriate tires: tire condition, weather, road surface and driver inputs still affect traction and braking. The Mustang’s rear-drive layout and manual option will appeal more to drivers who prioritize a traditional coupe and direct transmission involvement.

These starting figures suggest a lower entry price for the Mustang GT than for the Charger R/T, but they do not establish the price difference between comparably equipped cars. Destination, options, dealer pricing, incentives, taxes and fees can change the transaction total. The Scat Pack’s price and 550-hp output also put it in a different comparison than the base R/T.

The available figures do not support a five-year total-cost winner. A useful comparison needs more than starting MSRP: it requires fuel use, insurance quotes, maintenance and repair assumptions, depreciation, actual transaction prices and a defined ownership period. Those inputs vary by location, driver, mileage, equipment and use.

Dodge states 23 mpg combined for the Charger R/T. A directly comparable official 2026 Mustang GT rating is not established by the sources cited here, so that Dodge number alone cannot show which car will cost less to fuel. EPA fuel-economy ratings use standardized tests to support comparisons; they are estimates, not guarantees of an individual driver’s results. Route, climate, vehicle condition, maintenance and driving style affect real-world mileage. To estimate fuel expense fairly, use the exact trim and transmission’s official rating, annual mileage, local fuel price and an explicit city/highway assumption. Divide annual miles by the chosen mpg figure to estimate gallons, then multiply by the stated price per gallon. Keep the fuel grade consistent with each vehicle’s requirements.
Maintenance and warranty: verify the vehicle-specific documents
Ford’s online Mustang manual says its recommended service intervals are based on engineering testing and that following the schedule helps support reliability and control ownership cost. It advises checking tire wear and pressure monthly and checking oil at every fuel fill under severe high-speed, high-load or track use. Insurance and depreciation require your own comparison
