Car and Driver called the ZR1’s result the fastest in Lightning Lap history; Chevrolet’s newsroom also reported it as the test’s record. This is a comparison of laps recorded in different years, not a same-day head-to-head or proof that the ZR1 is faster on every circuit.
How fast did the Corvette ZR1 lap VIR?
Car and Driver recorded a 2:34.2 lap in its 2026 Lightning Lap test at VIR, a 4.1-mile circuit in Virginia. The outlet reported that the time was 0.7 second quicker than the 2:34.9 set by a McLaren Senna in its 2019 test. Chevrolet separately described the ZR1 result as the fastest in the history of Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap.
The result belongs specifically to this test, car and course. It is not a universal ranking of the two cars: the laps were recorded seven years apart, rather than in a controlled, same-day comparison. Car and Driver’s Lightning Lap report and Chevrolet’s newsroom report both cover the ZR1’s result.
What car and tires set the time?
Car and Driver’s test entry lists the ZR1 at 1,064 horsepower and 3,899 pounds, classified in the outlet’s LL4 category. Its tires were Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R ZP: 275/30ZR-20 at the front and 345/25ZR-21 at the rear.

What made the ZR1 quick around VIR?
Speed on the Front Straight
The ZR1 reached 179.0 mph on VIR’s Front Straight, which Car and Driver described as a new record for the section. That speed helped, but the magazine did not frame the lap as merely a straight-line-speed achievement.

High-speed cornering
Car and Driver reported an average of 141.2 mph through the Climbing Esses, calling it a section record. The figure points to the car’s ability to carry speed through a demanding high-speed sequence, not just accelerate down a straight.
Weight, power and aero versus the Senna
In Car and Driver’s comparison, the Senna was 869 pounds lighter and had active aerodynamics. The magazine reported similar power-to-weight ratios: 3.7 pounds per horsepower for the ZR1 and 3.8 for the Senna. It also reported that the ZR1 was 6.1 mph faster on the Front Straight in its test. These are figures from separate Lightning Lap tests, not measurements from a direct, simultaneous run.

How much did the tested ZR1 cost?
Car and Driver listed a $216,380 base price and $238,695 as tested for its Lightning Lap configuration. Chevrolet’s 2026 ZR1 model page lists a $185,000 starting price. These figures refer to different contexts: the manufacturer’s model-page starting price is not the same as the price of Car and Driver’s test configuration.
During the test, the team damaged a carbon-fiber front wheel after clipping the leading edge of a curb. Car and Driver listed $6,060 as the parts-counter cost for that wheel. That is the reported cost for this test incident, not a general repair estimate or a recommendation for a replacement part.

How does this relate to Chevrolet’s other VIR records?
Chevrolet says the ZR1 had previously set a VIR Grand Course production-car lap record with GM driver Aaron Link. The automaker also says the car holds production-car records at Watkins Glen’s Long Course, Road America and Road Atlanta. Those are distinct manufacturer-reported track records; they should not be confused with the Car and Driver Lightning Lap result, which is a record in that publication’s test series.
For the ZR1’s manufacturer-listed starting price, see Chevrolet’s 2026 Corvette ZR1 model page.
