The winter-tested electric 3 Series prototype is now the fully electric BMW i3, the first sedan based on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform and part of the eighth-generation 3 Series family. BMW said it completed final endurance testing at its Arjeplog winter test centre in Sweden before the i3’s design premiere on 18 March 2026. The work focused in part on suspension, drive systems and vehicle control—not on publicly documented spy-shot details.

What is the electric BMW 3 Series called?

BMW identifies the winter-tested prototype as the fully electric BMW i3. It is the first Neue Klasse sedan and belongs to the eighth generation of the 3 Series. “Mule car” is a useful description of its development stage, but BMW’s production-car name is i3. The company revealed the production-intent model in March 2026. BMW’s winter-test announcement and i3 reveal explain the transition from prototype to production-intent vehicle.

Where did BMW winter-test the i3, and what did it test?

BMW said prototypes completed final endurance testing at its winter test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden, before the March 2026 design premiere. The company describes the location as a place to test and optimise suspension and drive systems, with icy roads and low-friction surfaces used in the winter work. BMW says those conditions helped engineers tune driving dynamics and vehicle control. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its validation program, not independent test findings.

“The BMW Group’s winter test centre in Arjeplog offers ideal conditions for testing and optimising suspension and drive systems.” — BMW Group, 5 March 2026

What technology is BMW highlighting?

BMW says the i3 uses sixth-generation eDrive and its Heart of Joy control system with BMW Dynamic Performance Control software. According to the company, Heart of Joy coordinates drive, braking, some steering functions and recuperation. BMW also claims the system responds ten times faster than previous systems; the published material does not specify a measurement protocol, so that figure is a manufacturer comparison rather than an independently measured result. BMW’s i3 reveal and Heart of Joy description provide the company’s technology claims.

What remains unconfirmed by these announcements?

BMW’s winter-test material describes the purpose and conditions of its own development work, but it does not establish independent winter-performance results or a separate visual account of a spotted prototype. The cited sources also do not establish a charging specification or charging time. Anyone comparing the i3 with another electric sedan should therefore treat those as open questions and wait for market-specific technical details and independent road tests rather than extrapolating from the winter-test announcement.
