The 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is the best hardtop convertible for most buyers because it delivers a genuine retractable roof, rear-wheel drive, a compact footprint, and the lowest entry price among the new cars in this guide. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible is the better performance-per-dollar choice, while the Corvette E-Ray Convertible is the strongest all-weather option. At the exotic end, the Maserati MC20 Cielo, Ferrari 296 GTS, McLaren Artura Spider, and Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider offer more power and exclusivity but bring substantially higher prices, complexity, and ownership costs.

This is a desk-researched 2026 buyer’s guide, not an instrumented road test. The ratings are editorial fit ratings based on verified roof designs, manufacturer-stated specifications, market position, and practical usability considerations. No independent acceleration, braking, fuel-economy, comfort, reliability, or noise testing was performed.

What counts as a hardtop convertible?

This guide uses hardtop convertible narrowly: a road car with a roof made from rigid panels or rigid glass that retracts, folds, or stores electrically so the car can be driven open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That definition excludes ordinary fabric soft tops, fixed panoramic roofs, removable targa panels, removable coupe roof panels, and roofs that only change from transparent to opaque without opening. The Maserati MC20 Cielo qualifies, but it is more accurately described as a retractable glass hardtop rather than a conventional folding metal hardtop.

  • THE PERFECT PRESENT: Don't know what to get dad for his birthday? Or maybe you have an avid hobbyist or collector in your life. This model kit makes an ideal gift for any occasion!

The distinction matters. A removable roof panel can provide an open-air experience, but it is not a powered convertible roof. Likewise, a fixed glass roof may brighten the cabin but cannot turn the car into a true convertible.

1. Mazda MX-5 Miata RF: Best value hardtop convertible

Editorial rating: 8.8/10 overall; 9.2/10 for value and driver involvement; 7.4/10 for long-distance practicality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 2026 MX-5 Miata RF is the clearest answer for a shopper who specifically wants a current, genuine hardtop convertible without moving into exotic-car pricing. Its electronically retractable fastback roof opens or closes in approximately 13 seconds, giving the car a coupe-like appearance with the roof closed and open-air driving when desired.

Mazda’s 2026 U.S. pricing release lists the RF Club at $41,900 before destination and other charges. That is the lowest stated entry point among the new hardtop convertibles covered here. Mazda also describes the RF as body-color on the Grand Touring trim, so shoppers should compare the exact trim rather than assuming every RF has the same exterior roof treatment.

The RF’s appeal is not about headline horsepower. It is about scale, simplicity, rear-wheel drive, and the ability to enjoy a winding road without the size and financial burden of a supercar. It is the car on this list most likely to feel like a sports car first and a complex luxury object second.

What you give up with the RF

There are only two seats, the cabin is compact, and luggage capacity is limited. The RF roof mechanism also makes it a distinct model from the MX-5 soft top. Do not assume that soft-top cargo, visibility, wind behavior, or storage information applies directly to the RF. Check the exact model year and trim, especially if you routinely carry large luggage or plan extended road trips.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For roof-down comfort, owners can compare a Mazda MX-5 Miata RF wind deflector. Fitment deserves careful attention: the ND-generation RF is different from the soft-top MX-5 and from the older NC-generation retractable-hardtop car. Confirm the generation, RF body style, model year, and installation requirements before purchasing.

2. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible: Best performance bargain

Editorial rating: 8.7/10 overall; 9.0/10 for performance per dollar; 8.5/10 for roof execution.

The Corvette Stingray Convertible is the mainstream performance choice for buyers who want supercar proportions and a V8 without stepping into a Ferrari, McLaren, or Maserati purchase. Its power-retractable hardtop lowers in 16 seconds while the vehicle is moving at speeds up to 30 mph. With the roof closed, the car retains the visual presence of a coupe; with it open, the mid-engine layout and low seating position create a much more dramatic experience than the price category suggests.

Chevrolet lists the Stingray’s 6.2-liter V8 at 490 horsepower, or 495 horsepower with the available performance exhaust. Those are manufacturer-stated outputs, not independent test results. The convertible roof adds weight and mechanical complexity compared with the coupe, but it avoids the compromise of a fabric top for shoppers who prioritize a rigid closed-roof appearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Stingray is also easier to place in a normal ownership ecosystem than the exotics here. Chevrolet’s broader dealer network and a two-seat layout that is more usable than the tiny MX-5 make it a strong choice for weekend trips and regular driving. It is still not a grand tourer: storage, ingress, ride comfort, and option pricing should be evaluated on the exact car.

Remember that the standard Corvette coupe is not included as a hardtop convertible. Its removable roof panel is a different solution. The convertible is the version Chevrolet identifies as having the power-retractable hardtop.

3. Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray Convertible: Best all-weather choice

Editorial rating: 8.8/10 overall; 9.1/10 for performance and traction; 8.2/10 for value.

The E-Ray Convertible is the strongest choice for drivers who want open-air driving but place unusual importance on traction and rapid acceleration. It combines a V8 with an electrically powered front axle, creating all-wheel drive without abandoning the Corvette’s combustion-engine character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chevrolet lists 655 combined horsepower, a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 2.5 seconds, and a current model-page starting price of $108,600. The power-retractable roof can operate at speeds up to 30 mph. Chevrolet’s acceleration figure is a claim from the manufacturer and should not be treated as an independently verified result.

Compared with the rear-drive Stingray, the E-Ray makes the most sense for a buyer who regularly encounters rain, cold conditions, or inconsistent pavement and wants more confidence when putting the power down. It is not automatically the right choice for every climate: all-wheel drive does not replace appropriate tires, sensible speeds, or good judgment.

Rank #2
Revell 1968 Corvette L/88 Convertible 2N1 Car Model Building Kit 1:25 Scale
  • Revell Model Kit #14572, Skill Level 4, Contains 124-Parts, Recommended for ages 12 and up
  • Choice of removable hardtop or simulated convertible soft top. Highly detailed 427-cubic-inch “L88” V-8 engine.
  • Stock and street machine parts included.
  • Tampo-printed redline tires.
  • Molded in white and transparent red with chrome plated parts and soft black tires. Paint and glue required(not included).

The trade-off is a more technologically dense ownership proposition. The front electric drive system and retractable roof add hardware, weight, and potential long-term complexity. That does not establish a reliability verdict, but it does make a careful warranty, service, and dealer-capability review more important.

4. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible: Best naturally aspirated track-focused choice

Editorial rating: 8.7/10 overall; 9.3/10 for performance character; 7.8/10 for everyday value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Z06 Convertible is for the buyer who wants the Corvette’s wide-body, track-oriented character and naturally aspirated V8 experience while retaining an electrically operated hardtop. Chevrolet says the roof can operate at speeds up to 30 mph.

The convertible penalty is visible in Chevrolet’s published dry weights: the Z06 Convertible is listed at 3,599 pounds versus 3,500 pounds for the coupe. That 99-pound difference does not mean the convertible is unsuitable for performance driving, but it is a useful reminder that an open roof has engineering consequences. Buyers focused on lap times, repeated track use, and minimum mass should compare the coupe directly.

Ownership costs can extend well beyond the purchase price. Tires, brakes, aero equipment, cooling-related options, and track-day wear can all be expensive. The Z06 should be chosen for its character and capability rather than because it is the cheapest way to access a fast convertible.

5. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and ZR1X Convertibles: Extreme American options

Editorial rating: 8.2/10 overall; 9.5/10 for performance ceiling; 6.5/10 for accessibility.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The ZR1 and ZR1X represent the extreme end of the current Corvette convertible conversation. Chevrolet says the 2026 ZR1X will be available in coupe or hardtop-convertible body styles, and 2026 Corvette lineup materials describe the broader family as offering convertibles with fully retractable hardtops.

This is a category for readers who want the highest performance ceiling in an open-air American car, not for ordinary value shoppers. The ZR1X may offer exceptional performance relative to exotic alternatives, but that does not make it accessible in the normal sense. Allocation, production timing, final retail pricing, equipment, and exact trim availability must be confirmed with Chevrolet before treating it as an immediately orderable recommendation.

For that reason, the ZR1X receives the highest performance-fit rating in this guide but not the highest overall score. A large score based only on potential performance would hide the practical question of whether a buyer can actually obtain and support the car.

6. Maserati MC20 Cielo: Best distinctive glass-roof exotic

Editorial rating: 8.1/10 overall; 8.8/10 for design and novelty; 7.2/10 for ownership practicality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MC20 Cielo is a separate open-top spyder variant of the MC20 and uses an electrically retractable PDLC glass roof. Maserati says it opens or closes in 12 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph. When closed, the glass can switch between transparent and opaque modes.

That roof gives the Cielo a different identity from a normal metal folding hardtop. It can provide a bright, open visual experience even when closed, then slide into the rear housing when the driver wants genuine open-air motoring. It is best understood as a retractable glass hardtop, not as evidence that every glass-roof convertible uses the same mechanism.

The Cielo’s carbon-fiber and composite architecture, mid-engine exotic proportions, and unusual roof design make it one of the most visually distinctive cars here. Its limitations are predictable: limited practicality, a smaller dealer footprint than Mazda or Chevrolet, and exotic-car purchase and service costs.

7. McLaren Artura Spider: Best hybrid supercar alternative

Editorial rating: 7.9/10 overall; 8.7/10 for technology and exclusivity; 6.8/10 for usability and value.

McLaren describes the Artura Spider as using a retractable hardtop, making it a valid candidate for this guide rather than a fabric-roof roadster. Its appeal is the combination of hybrid powertrain technology, exotic packaging, and McLaren’s lightweight performance focus.

The Artura Spider is a specialist purchase. It is not a sensible substitute for the MX-5 RF or Stingray if affordability, dealer access, or routine practicality matters. Final 2026 U.S. pricing, ordering status, inventory, and allocation should be confirmed through an authorized McLaren retailer rather than assumed from older or non-U.S. product pages.

8. McLaren 750S Spider: Fastest stated roof operation

Editorial rating: 8.0/10 overall; 9.0/10 for performance and roof speed; 6.2/10 for practicality.

The 750S Spider uses a retractable hardtop that McLaren says can move up or down in 11 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h. That is the fastest stated roof operation among the directly sourced candidates in this guide, although operation time alone does not determine whether a convertible is the best car to own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 750S Spider is aimed at buyers who prioritize supercar intensity, dramatic design, and a genuine hardtop mechanism over affordability, passenger space, or cargo capacity. The roof is a compelling engineering feature, but the purchase decision should include insurance, servicing, tire costs, storage, and the exact vehicle’s delivery specification.

McLaren’s available product information requires final verification of U.S. ordering, pricing, and availability through an authorized retailer. No independent performance or roof-speed test is implied here.

9. Ferrari 296 GTS: Best plug-in-hybrid Ferrari hardtop convertible

Editorial rating: 8.1/10 overall; 9.2/10 for powertrain and roof integration; 6.4/10 for accessibility.

The Ferrari 296 GTS is a two-seat plug-in-hybrid spider with a retractable hardtop. Ferrari says the roof opens or closes in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h and states combined output of up to 830 cv.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 296 GTS is the Ferrari to consider when the buyer wants a modern hybrid powertrain and open-air driving without giving up a rigid retractable roof. Ferrari’s use of cv should be preserved rather than casually converted to U.S. horsepower; the unit and the manufacturer’s stated figure are not interchangeable labels without explaining the conversion method.

As with other Ferraris, the practical barriers are not limited to the list price. Allocation, dealer availability, specification, insurance, maintenance, and running costs all matter. The 296 GTS is a performance and ownership-experience choice, not a rational replacement for the Corvette E-Ray based on acceleration numbers alone.

10. Ferrari 296 Speciale A: Best limited-performance derivative

Editorial rating: 7.8/10 overall; 9.5/10 for exclusivity and performance; 5.5/10 for attainability.

The 296 Speciale A adds a retractable hardtop to the 296 Speciale platform. Ferrari says the roof opens or closes in 14 seconds and states an 880-cv output from the hybridized V6 powertrain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a highly specialized, limited or special-series opportunity rather than a normal recommendation for shoppers comparing everyday new-car choices. Its track-derived hardware, special-series positioning, and stated output make it appealing to collectors and committed Ferrari buyers, but scarcity and allocation can matter more than the nominal ranking.

For a buyer who wants a more attainable place in the Ferrari open-top range, the regular 296 GTS is the more relevant comparison. Exact U.S. availability and allocation should be confirmed directly with Ferrari.

11. Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider: Best V12 hardtop grand tourer

Editorial rating: 7.8/10 overall; 9.3/10 for grand-touring character; 5.8/10 for accessibility.

The 12Cilindri Spider is the choice for a buyer who values a front-engine V12 grand-tourer experience above compactness, price, or everyday convenience. Ferrari says its retractable hardtop opens or closes in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h, while its naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 produces 830 cv.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Spider stores the roof in the rear area rather than retaining the coupe’s rear seating arrangement, so it is not a four-seat alternative to the fixed-roof car. That is a meaningful usability difference, not merely a body-style change.

The 12Cilindri Spider earns a high character rating because a naturally aspirated V12 and a retractable rigid roof create a combination few cars can offer. Its low overall score reflects access, price, scarcity, and practicality—not a lack of engineering appeal.

How to choose the right hardtop convertible

Start with the roof, not the horsepower

A rigid retractable roof can deliver a coupe-like closed-roof appearance and a quieter, more substantial cabin impression than a fabric top. The price is added mechanism complexity, weight, and packaging demand. Those are general engineering trade-offs, not proof that a particular model is unreliable. No model-specific reliability conclusion should be drawn without appropriate reliability data.

Roof behavior also varies considerably. The MX-5 RF takes approximately 13 seconds, the Corvette Stingray takes 16 seconds and can operate while moving up to 30 mph, the MC20 Cielo takes 12 seconds, and the McLaren 750S Spider has a stated 11-second cycle at up to 50 km/h. Ferrari’s 296 GTS and 12Cilindri Spider are stated at 14 seconds and up to 45 km/h. Always verify the exact operation limit in the owner documentation before operating the roof while moving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the car to your passenger and luggage needs

  • One driver and occasional passenger: MX-5 RF is the most compact and financially approachable choice.
  • Two-seat weekend performance: Stingray Convertible offers the broadest balance of speed, presence, and relative accessibility.
  • Longer trips with a preference for open air: Compare the Corvette’s storage layout and seating comfort with the RF before buying; neither is a conventional family tourer.
  • Exotic ownership: Assume limited storage and check cargo volume with the roof open, not only with it closed.
  • Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider: remember that the Spider gives up the coupe’s rear seating arrangement.

Consider weather and traction

The E-Ray Convertible is the natural choice in this group for a buyer who prioritizes all-wheel-drive traction and hybrid assistance. The Stingray, Z06, and other rear-drive candidates may still be entirely appropriate, but drivetrain choice should be evaluated alongside tire specification, climate, road conditions, and intended use.

Price the ownership proposition, not only the car

Only some 2026 prices are established in the research available for this guide: the MX-5 RF Club is listed at $41,900 before destination and other charges, and Chevrolet lists the E-Ray Convertible at a current starting price of $108,600. The dossier does not establish final retail pricing for every exotic or for the ZR1X, so a dealer quote should replace assumptions.

Get written answers about insurance, scheduled maintenance, roof-system service, battery or hybrid-system coverage where applicable, tire and brake replacement, parts availability, storage requirements, and warranty exclusions. For low-volume cars, the nearest qualified service location may be more important than the nearest showroom.

Roof operation and ownership checklist

Before signing a purchase order, perform or confirm these checks on the exact car and model year:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  1. Operate the roof several times. Confirm that the cycle is smooth, completes without warning messages, and leaves the roof fully latched in both positions.
  2. Confirm operating limits. Ask whether the roof may be operated while moving and at what maximum speed. Do not generalize the limit from another convertible.
  3. Measure storage with the roof open. A roof that stores behind the cabin can change usable luggage space or access.
  4. Check emergency procedures. Ask where the manual release or emergency tools are stored and read the owner documentation. Emergency roof tools are for the documented procedure, not an invitation to dismantle the mechanism.
  5. Inspect seals, glass, panels, and trim. Look for wind noise, water marks, uneven panel gaps, scratched glass, or evidence of previous adjustment.
  6. Verify warranty coverage. Confirm what is covered for the roof motor, latches, hydraulic or electric components, glass, seals, and related electronics.
  7. Confirm dealer capability. Ask whether the selling or servicing dealer is equipped and trained to diagnose the exact retractable-roof system.
  8. Check storage restrictions. Some cars may have requirements concerning roof position, battery maintenance, temperature, or clearance during long-term storage.
  9. Verify replacement-part availability. This is especially important for low-volume Maserati, McLaren, and Ferrari models.

Useful accessories, with fitment warnings

Wind management is one of the few accessories that can directly improve the roof-down experience, but it must be vehicle-specific. A deflector for an ND MX-5 RF is not automatically suitable for the soft-top MX-5 or the earlier NC retractable-hardtop model. Similarly, a C8 Corvette accessory should be confirmed for the exact convertible body style and model year before purchase.

Owners comparing a C8 Corvette convertible windscreen should verify fitment for the Stingray, E-Ray, or Z06 Convertible rather than relying on a listing that simply says Corvette C8. The same caution applies to model-specific covers and windshield sun shades: check roof position, antenna and mirror clearance, exterior dimensions, weather exposure, and whether the cover is intended for indoor or outdoor storage.

Models that do not belong in this ranking

Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster: It is a convertible, but the 2026 owner’s manual identifies its roof as a soft top. It therefore does not meet this guide’s hardtop definition.

Standard Chevrolet Corvette coupe: Its removable roof panel does not make it a powered hardtop convertible. The Corvette Convertible is the separate model with the power-retractable hardtop.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Fixed panoramic and electrochromic glass roofs: A roof that becomes transparent or opaque but does not retract does not provide open-air driving.

Targa roofs and removable hardtops: These belong in an alternatives comparison because they can provide some of the visual or driving appeal of a convertible, but they are not electrically retractable hardtop convertibles under the definition used here.

How this ranking should be used

There is no meaningful way to declare a $40,000 roadster universally better than a limited-production Ferrari. The awards above reflect buyer fit:

  • Choose the MX-5 RF for the lowest-cost entry into this category and the most lightweight, focused driving experience.
  • Choose the Stingray Convertible when performance per dollar and a broad dealer network matter most.
  • Choose the E-Ray Convertible when traction and acceleration are worth its added cost and complexity.
  • Choose the Z06 Convertible for naturally aspirated, track-oriented character, while accepting the mass and consumable costs.
  • Choose the ZR1X only after Chevrolet confirms production, allocation, specification, and price.
  • Choose the MC20 Cielo for the distinctive retractable glass roof and exotic design.
  • Choose the Artura Spider, 750S Spider, or 296 GTS when hybrid or supercar technology outweighs accessibility and running costs.
  • Choose the 12Cilindri Spider for an open-air V12 grand-touring experience, not for rear-seat practicality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest new hardtop convertible in this 2026 guide?

The 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is the lowest-priced new model in this shortlist. Mazda’s U.S. pricing release lists the RF Club at $41,900 before destination and other charges. Verify the final transaction price, trim, and destination fees with a Mazda dealer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Corvette coupe a hardtop convertible?

No. The standard Corvette coupe has a removable roof panel, while the Corvette Convertible has the power-retractable hardtop required for inclusion in this guide.

Is the Maserati MC20 Cielo a traditional metal hardtop convertible?

It qualifies under the guide’s broad rigid-roof definition, but it should be labeled a retractable glass hardtop. Its PDLC glass roof slides into the rear housing and can switch between transparent and opaque modes when closed.

Does a hardtop convertible have better reliability than a soft top?

Not necessarily. A rigid retractable roof can offer a coupe-like closed-roof appearance, but it also adds mechanism complexity, weight, and packaging demands. Reliability should be assessed with model-specific data and warranty information rather than roof type alone.

What should I check before buying a used or new hardtop convertible?

Operate the roof repeatedly, confirm its speed limit and emergency procedure, inspect seals and panel alignment, measure cargo space with the roof open, verify warranty coverage, and confirm that the dealer can service the exact roof system. For exotic models, also check parts availability, storage requirements, insurance, and service distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For most shoppers, the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is the smartest hardtop-convertible purchase: affordable within this category, compact, rear-wheel drive, and genuinely engaging. The Corvette Stingray Convertible is the stronger choice when performance and usable dealer support matter more than minimum size or price. The E-Ray adds all-weather traction, while the Z06, ZR1X, MC20 Cielo, McLarens, and Ferraris serve increasingly specialized performance, design, and exclusivity goals. Confirm final pricing, allocation, roof fitment, warranty coverage, and service capability for the exact 2026 car before committing.
