MotorTrend’s U.S.-spec first drive finds the redesigned 2026 Audi Q3 more polished inside and stronger on paper, with standard all-wheel drive and a more flexible rear seat. But the review also flags short front-seat cushions and touchscreen menus that can make functions hard to find. U.S. pricing was not confirmed in the available sources, so there is not enough evidence to call it a budget-priced luxury SUV.
What changed for the U.S. 2026 Q3?
In a first drive published March 17, 2026, MotorTrend writer Aaron Gold drove the U.S.-spec Q3 in San Luis Obispo, California. He describes its cabin as a substantial improvement over the outgoing model. The U.S. version has standard leather upholstery and tulipwood dashboard trim, lending the interior a more upscale impression.
Under the hood is an upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 255 hp and 273 lb-ft, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. MotorTrend says all-wheel drive is standard. The outgoing Q3 had 228 hp, 251 lb-ft and an eight-speed torque-converter automatic, according to the review. These are the U.S.-model figures reported by MotorTrend.
How does it feel from the driver’s seat?
Powertrain and controls
MotorTrend’s review presents the updated engine and transmission as a meaningful change, but does not provide instrumented acceleration or fuel-economy results. Gold found the fixed control stalks, which have small moving rockers, unusual in appearance but straightforward to use.

Front-seat support and infotainment
The front seats are a notable weakness in the review. The U.S. seats have less restrictive side bolsters than the European seats, but omit their extendable thigh bolsters. Gold says the cushions feel too short to support the thighs adequately, even for shorter drivers.
The touchscreen looks good and is manageable to operate, but Gold found that some desired functions are buried in menus and did not consider the system particularly intuitive. Those are the reviewer’s impressions from the first drive, rather than a universal assessment of every driver’s experience.

Is the Q3 practical for passengers and cargo?
The rear bench slides, letting the driver trade passenger room for luggage space. MotorTrend reports 25.0 to 29.0 cubic feet of cargo capacity depending on bench position. The rear seat folds in a 40/20/40 split, which allows different combinations of passengers and longer items.
MotorTrend describes the rear outboard seats as comfortable. Rear passengers also get air vents, individual temperature control and two high-wattage USB ports as standard. The review notes large areas of plastic on the rear doors, a reminder that the cabin’s more upscale feel is not equally apparent throughout.

Do European Q3 specifications apply to the U.S. model?
No. Audi AG’s August 25, 2025 announcement describes the third-generation Q3 SUV and Sportback for Europe, where the range includes TFSI petrol and TDI diesel engines, quattro variants and a plug-in hybrid. MotorTrend says the U.S. launch vehicle has one engine and steel suspension. European powertrains, equipment and figures should not be treated as U.S. specifications.
Audi’s announcement gives the European plug-in hybrid a preliminary electric range of up to 119 kilometers, measured under the WLTP procedure; that is not a U.S. EPA range rating. It lists European Q3 SUV cargo capacity as 488 liters with the rear seat in use and up to 1,386 liters folded. The Sportback is listed at up to 1,289 liters with its rear seat folded. These figures come from Audi’s European-market release and use a different source and measurement context from MotorTrend’s U.S. cubic-foot figures.

Audi also announced October 2025 launch timing for Germany and Europe, with historical German starting prices of €44,600 for the Q3 SUV TFSI 110 kW, €46,450 for the Sportback TFSI 110 kW and €49,300 for the SUV e-hybrid. Those prices are not U.S. MSRP or current retail offers.

The first-drive evidence points to a compact luxury SUV with a noticeably improved cabin, a stronger U.S. powertrain and useful rear-seat flexibility. Its front-seat thigh support and menu-heavy touchscreen deserve a personal check during a test drive, especially if those details matter in daily use.

Whether it represents good value cannot be established from the sources available here: they do not confirm U.S. 2026 pricing, trim details or current local availability. For a comparison with a BMW X1 or another rival, check the same local trim level and equipment, drivetrain, seat comfort, infotainment, cargo flexibility, warranty and ownership terms. The available information does not support ranking the Q3 against those vehicles.
