That makes it a distinct brand in BMW’s portfolio—not proof that BMW spun Alpina out as an independent company or acquired every part of the former business.
What changed on 1 January 2026?
BMW’s announcement says the Alpina trademark rights transferred to BMW Group on 1 January 2026, marking the launch of BMW ALPINA as an exclusive standalone brand within the Group. BMW published the announcement on 2 January. The wording matters: “standalone” describes the marque’s place in BMW Group’s brand portfolio; it does not mean an independent company outside BMW.
The official materials cited here establish the transfer of trademark rights, but do not set out the complete legal transaction perimeter or the former company’s subsequent business structure. They also do not specify servicing or parts arrangements for existing Alpina cars. BMW’s launch announcement
What BMW ALPINA is intended to represent
BMW describes the marque as combining high performance with ride comfort, composure and individuality. Its stated emphasis on bespoke options and custom materials places personalisation at the centre of the brand’s intended identity. These are BMW’s positioning claims, not independent assessments of a production car.

That is corporate positioning, not a confirmed price range or independently verified competitor comparison. BMW frames the intended customer as someone who values refinement, long-distance driving and a distinctive experience.

BMW describes the new wordmark as a reference to Alpina’s asymmetric 1970s logotype. It says the emblem stylises individual throttle bodies and a crankshaft. In BMW Group’s feature on the brand, Design head Adrian van Hooydonk said of the Vision study: “The Vision BMW ALPINA shows how these qualities can be expressed with discipline and modernity, suggesting what our direction is for this brand as we move it into the future.”
