It adds a 3-inch lift kit, all-terrain tires, stylized aluminum wheels, a raised hitch-jack foot pad, stainless-steel rock guards and a solar window guard. Those are specific upgrades for ground clearance and debris protection—not proof that either trailer is rated for every off-road route.
What changed for the 2026 Basecamp X models?
Airstream says the X-Package, previously an optional upgrade, is now standard on the 2026 Basecamp 16X and 20X. The company describes the lift, tires, wheels and raised jack foot pad as adding ground clearance, while the guards help protect exterior surfaces from loose debris. Airstream’s model-year announcement identifies the change; its 2026 Basecamp brochure lists standard equipment.
What the X-Package includes
- 3-inch lift kit
- Goodyear all-terrain tires and stylized aluminum wheels
- Raised hitch jack foot pad
- Stainless-steel rock guards
- Solar window guard
The brochure specifies Goodyear Wrangler Trailrunner ST235/75R15E tires on the 16X and Goodyear Off Road Durotec LT235/85R16E tires on the 20X; both models also list a full-size spare as standard. These are different tire specifications, not interchangeable recommendations. Confirm the exact trailer’s tire and load-rating requirements before considering replacements.
How much ground clearance do the 16X and 20X have?
Airstream Support lists full-load ground clearance of 9.68 inches for the 16X and 12.04 inches for the 20X. “Full load” means the recommended weight of onboard accessories and gear is inside the trailer. These figures come from a support answer last updated November 16, 2022—not a newly published 2026 measurement. Ask an authorized dealer to confirm the current specification for the exact unit. For comparison, that same older answer gives 7.05 inches for the non-X Basecamp 16 and 8.90 inches for the non-X Basecamp 20 at full load. The figures describe published clearance, not a trail rating or a guarantee of performance over rocks, ruts, steep breakovers or other obstacles. Airstream’s reviewed materials do not establish a maximum grade, obstacle height or route capability.
Basecamp 16X vs. 20X: dimensions, weight and capacity
The 20X is longer, heavier and rated to carry a higher gross vehicle weight; it also sleeps more people. Both models list 800 pounds of cargo capacity in the 2026 brochure. The clearance column uses the older Airstream Support figures above, not brochure measurements.

Other listed tank capacities may matter on longer trips: the 16X has a 21-gallon fresh-water tank and a 24-gallon combination waste tank; the 20X has a 23-gallon fresh-water tank, a 28-gallon gray-water tank and a 21-gallon waste tank, according to the brochure.
How to choose between the 16X and 20X
Check the whole tow combination
Do not select a tow vehicle based on trailer base weight alone. Compare the vehicle’s actual ratings with the loaded trailer and tongue weights, and account for passengers, cargo and other loads in the tow vehicle. The brochure’s base and hitch weights are listed with LP and batteries, but actual trip loading changes what the trailer weighs and how much cargo capacity remains. Have a dealer help verify the specific trailer’s loaded figures and compatibility with your vehicle.

Match size and layout to your trips
The 16X’s shorter 16-foot-2-inch length and two-person sleeping capacity suit buyers prioritizing a smaller trailer and traveling with up to two sleepers. The 20X’s 20-foot-2-inch length and sleeping capacity of up to four provide more room for additional occupants, but require evaluating the greater base weight and hitch weight against the tow vehicle’s ratings.
Airstream describes practical layout features that can help with gear and living space: the rear hatch can admit larger items that are awkward to bring through the main door, and removable tables free storage space. Consider the route, not just the X badge
The lift and protective hardware may be useful for rougher approaches and loose debris, but the published equipment and clearance figures do not say that a Basecamp X can handle any particular trail. Consider the route’s surface, ruts, rocks, steep transitions and width, along with the loaded trailer’s clearance and dimensions. Confirm current measurements and equipment for the exact VIN before buying, especially if your planned route depends on a specific clearance margin.

A separate Airstream offer states that qualifying purchases of a new model-year 2026 or earlier Basecamp 16X, 20X or Basecamp Xe 20X can receive a $1,000 Airstream Supply Company gift card, one per unit. The stated eligibility period is for purchases and deliveries through an authorized Airstream dealer in the United States or Canada from July 1 through October 31, 2026, subject to terms.
