How the Yangwang U9 Jumps and Rotates in Place

BYD’s Yangwang U9 uses DiSus-X active suspension for its standstill jump. Its separate in-place spin is described as a tank turn, not the same stunt.

The BYD Yangwang U9’s jump is a controlled demonstration of its DiSus-X active suspension: the system rapidly moves the car’s body upward while it is stationary. The separate in-place rotation shown in the same coverage is described as a “tank turn,” a maneuver New Atlas links to torque control at the wheels. The two stunts are distinct, and neither is evidence that the U9 can routinely leap over road hazards.

What happens in the video?

The car is BYD’s electric hypercar, the Yangwang U9. New Atlas reported footage of it jumping from a standstill and separately rotating in place in a maneuver it called a tank turn. BYD Europe had earlier described the U9 as having “jumped from a standstill” during a technology event in Shenzhen (BYD Europe, May 29, 2023); New Atlas’s later account covers the jump and rotation clip (New Atlas, September 10, 2024).

How does the U9 jump?

BYD calls the U9’s body-control technology DiSus-X. The broader DiSus system is designed to manage vehicle-body movement laterally, longitudinally and vertically; BYD’s regional explanations describe DiSus-X alongside the e4 platform. For the jump, the key action is vertical: active suspension rapidly pushes the body upward while the car is at rest. This is a suspension demonstration, not a conventional vehicle launch.

BYD Auto Japan explains that DiSus uses air pressure or hydraulics and describes DiSus-X as coordinating movement in three directions. The company’s Japanese page says the U9 can jump about 20 cm, but also states that this function is not installed on vehicles sold in Japan and warns that the feature has limitations (BYD Auto Japan, date not stated). That figure is a manufacturer statement, not an independent measurement.

How is the tank turn different?

A tank turn is a rotation in place rather than an upward jump. New Atlas reports that torque distribution among the four wheels can enable tank turns and identifies the U9’s rotation as this kind of maneuver. The official BYD pages cited here explain DiSus-X and the jumping demonstration, but do not specify the exact operating mode or wheel-torque sequence used in that rotation clip. It is therefore clearer to treat the spin as a separate maneuver and attribute its explanation to New Atlas, rather than assume it is simply another form of suspension movement.

What DiSus-X figures has BYD published?

In a December 22, 2025 overview, BYD listed the following DiSus-X figures and described the U9 as having demonstrated jumping, dancing and three-wheel operation (BYD Media, December 22, 2025). These are company-published specifications, not independently verified test results.

Is the jump a practical way to avoid obstacles?

No. The available descriptions present it as a demonstration of vehicle dynamics, not as a routine road feature for clearing potholes, debris or other hazards. The Japan-market page’s warning about limitations reinforces that distinction. Nor should the capability be assumed to be present on every U9: BYD Auto Japan explicitly says the function is not fitted to vehicles sold in Japan, and the available sources do not establish availability across all markets or model versions.
