If you want an electric minivan, the 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is the clear U.S. answer. Its dual sliding doors, tall roof, upright seating, flexible three-row cabin, and easy child-seat access give it advantages that an electric three-row SUV cannot fully replicate. The catch is range: with only 231–234 miles of EPA-rated range and less in some highway tests, it is best for buyers with dependable home or workplace charging—not frequent long-distance travelers seeking maximum range per dollar.
The short answer
If you specifically want an electric minivan in the United States, the 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz is the obvious answer. It has the features that make a minivan useful—dual sliding doors, a tall roof, upright seating, easy child-seat access, and flexible three-row seating—rather than simply being a three-row SUV with a battery.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That does not make it the best three-row electric vehicle for every shopper. Its 231–234-mile EPA range is modest for a vehicle this expensive, highway testing suggests a smaller real-world margin than the EPA number implies, and cargo space is limited when all three rows are occupied. The ID. Buzz is at its best as a family-focused local and regional vehicle with dependable home or workplace charging. It is a much less convincing choice for frequent long-distance road trips, maximum luggage capacity, or maximum range per dollar.

The U.S.-market ID. Buzz is a full-size, three-row electric people mover with a 91-kWh battery, a high roof, and a 127.5-inch wheelbase. It measures approximately 195.4 inches long, 78.1 inches wide, and 76.2 inches tall. Volkswagen describes the interior as roomier than the three-row Atlas, but the van’s most important advantage is not simply its maximum volume: it is how easily people can get in, get seated, and get back out.

Rear-wheel-drive models use Volkswagen’s APP550 rear motor and produce 282 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Available 4Motion all-wheel-drive models use dual motors and produce up to 335 horsepower. Seating varies by trim and configuration. Some versions seat up to seven with a second-row bench, while captain’s chairs reduce the total to six but improve separation and access between the rows. Do not assume every ID. Buzz has the same seating layout or passenger capacity.
2025 ID. Buzz trims and pricing
Volkswagen announced the following U.S. starting MSRPs for the 2025 model year, before the $1,550 destination charge:
| Trim | Starting MSRP before destination | Drivetrain and seating notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pro S | $59,995 | Rear-wheel drive only; value-oriented entry trim |
| Pro S Plus | $63,495 | Rear-wheel drive or available 4Motion; additional comfort and technology equipment |
| 1st Edition | $65,495 | Launch-only trim with appearance and equipment distinctions; rear-wheel drive or 4Motion |
Those are announced MSRPs, not guaranteed transaction prices. Dealer discounts, financing offers, leases, state incentives, inventory, and the availability of remaining 1st Edition vehicles can change by location and publication date. Check the vehicle’s actual window sticker and current dealer pricing rather than treating the starting figure as an out-the-door price. Eligibility for any government incentive or lease-related benefit also depends on date, location, purchase method, and the individual vehicle.

The Pro S is the logical starting point if rear-wheel drive meets your needs and you want the lowest entry price. The Pro S Plus is more compelling for buyers who want higher-end cabin equipment and the option of 4Motion. Volkswagen lists features such as premium audio, a panoramic electrochromic glass roof, and additional convenience equipment on higher trims, although exact equipment depends on trim, drivetrain, and package.
The 1st Edition is primarily for buyers who want launch-specific styling and equipment. It may be attractive as a collectible-feeling early ID. Buzz, but it is not automatically the best value. Compare its equipment and actual selling price with a Pro S Plus before paying a premium.
Range and charging: the ID. Buzz’s biggest weakness
Official EPA range is 234 miles for rear-wheel-drive models and 231 miles for 4Motion versions. Combined efficiency is rated at 83 MPGe for rear-wheel drive and 80 MPGe for 4Motion. Those figures are not disastrous, but they are underwhelming for a premium-priced electric vehicle with a 91-kWh battery. The van’s height and large frontal area work against efficiency, particularly at highway speeds.
Independent testing makes the road-trip compromise clearer. Car and Driver recorded 190 miles in a 75-mph highway test of an ID. Buzz. MotorTrend later reported 213 miles in road-trip testing against the rear-drive model’s 234-mile EPA estimate. These are results from particular vehicles, routes, temperatures, speeds, and test procedures—not a promise of what every owner will see—but they are useful warnings against planning a highway trip around the EPA number alone.

Volkswagen says the ID. Buzz can accept up to 200 kW from a DC fast charger and can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes under stated conditions. Actual charging speed depends on battery temperature, starting state of charge, charger capability, electrical load, and the vehicle’s charging curve. A 200-kW station does not mean the van will hold 200 kW for the entire session.

What ownership looks like
The ID. Buzz makes the most sense for an owner who can charge overnight at home or regularly at work. For school runs, errands, commuting, and regional travel, charging at home can make the limited range largely manageable. Without dependable overnight or destination charging, however, the van becomes more dependent on public infrastructure and more vulnerable to delays.
For long trips, plan conservatively. Leave room for weather, cold temperatures, wind, roof-mounted equipment, passengers, luggage, and the reduced efficiency of sustained highway driving. A route that appears to fit within 231 or 234 miles on paper may require an earlier charging stop in practice. The fast-charging rate helps, but it does not eliminate the need for more frequent stops than a longer-range and more efficient crossover would require.
Interior space and family practicality
The ID. Buzz’s core advantage is access. The dual sliding doors are easier to use in narrow parking spaces than conventional hinged rear doors, and they make loading children into car seats less awkward. The upright seating position, tall roof, broad cabin, and generous glass area create a light, open interior. These are functional benefits, not just retro design flourishes.
Volkswagen lists 18.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and up to 145.5 cubic feet with the second row folded and the third row removed for the cited technical configuration. The key qualification is that these figures describe different seating arrangements. Maximum cargo capacity requires removing the third row, and that is not a five-minute adjustment for every family or every trip.
With all three rows in use, the ID. Buzz can carry passengers well, but it does not offer an especially generous luggage area behind the third row for a minivan. A family of seven may need to pack carefully for a trip, use soft luggage, or rethink how much gear travels inside the van. Buyers who regularly carry seven people plus large suitcases should test that exact scenario before buying.
Bench seat or captain’s chairs?
A second-row bench is the better choice if maximum passenger capacity matters. It can make the ID. Buzz a seven-passenger vehicle, depending on the rest of the configuration. Second-row captain’s chairs provide more individual comfort and a passage between the seats, but they typically reduce capacity to six.
Neither layout is universally superior. Choose the bench for larger families and occasional extra passengers; choose captain’s chairs if easier movement through the cabin and individual second-row comfort matter more than the seventh seat. Confirm the arrangement on the specific vehicle because trim and drivetrain combinations are not identical.
Practical accessories worth considering
Families will quickly expose the floor to mud, food, wet shoes, and spilled drinks. If you shop for 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz floor mats, verify the model year, row configuration, retention points, and whether the mats fit around the second-row seat arrangement before ordering. A vehicle-specific listing is not enough by itself if the seller does not identify the exact cabin layout.

A Volkswagen ID. Buzz cargo liner can also make sense for owners who carry strollers, pets, sports equipment, or muddy gear. Confirm whether it covers the cargo floor with the third row installed, folded, or removed; those configurations can require different shapes or pieces. Protection is especially useful here because the van’s cargo usefulness depends on rearranging its seats rather than using one fixed cargo compartment.
Owners who carry bicycles, skis, boards, or other bulky equipment may consider ID. Buzz roof rack cross bars. Check Volkswagen’s approved fitment for the specific roof and trim, and remember that base carrier bars and attachments may be sold separately. Roof equipment can also add wind noise and reduce highway efficiency, which matters more in a vehicle whose range is already modest. Use proper installation and observe the manufacturer’s load limits.
How the ID. Buzz drives
The ID. Buzz is not small, light, or conventionally sporty, but its electric powertrain gives it strong low-speed acceleration. The rear-drive version’s 282 horsepower and instant motor response make it feel quicker in traffic than its van-like dimensions suggest. The battery’s low placement also helps keep the center of gravity lower than in a comparably tall gasoline van.

4Motion models produce up to 335 horsepower, and Volkswagen advertises approximately six seconds from 0 to 60 mph for the available all-wheel-drive model. MotorTrend recorded 6.6 seconds to 60 mph in a rear-drive model and described it as responsive and entertaining. That is a useful distinction: the ID. Buzz is maneuverable and quick enough to be satisfying, but it should not be called sporty in the same sense as a performance car or low-slung crossover.
Ride and handling opinions are less consistent. Some reviews praise the steering response and acceleration, while others criticize ride quality, efficiency, or the value proposition. The tall body, long wheelbase, and substantial mass remain noticeable in corners and on rough roads. The best description is that the ID. Buzz is more composed and more enjoyable than its size implies—not that it disguises its size completely.
Technology, comfort, and cabin character
Available equipment includes a 12.9-inch infotainment display, 30-color ambient lighting, wireless App-Connect, wireless phone charging, IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance technology, and Park Assist Plus with Memory Parking. Higher trims can add Harman Kardon premium audio and an electrochromic panoramic glass roof. Equipment varies by trim, drivetrain, and package, so verify the window sticker for the vehicle being considered.
The cabin’s retro-inspired design is subjective, but it is central to the ID. Buzz’s appeal. The styling gives buyers something different from the growing collection of anonymous electric crossovers, while the upright body creates useful headroom and visibility. The large glass area and open-feeling interior are particularly valuable in a family vehicle, where getting children, adults, and gear situated matters more than having a low roofline.

Safety and recalls: check the VIN
Volkswagen announced in November 2025 that the 2025 ID. Buzz received a five-star overall NHTSA safety rating. That is a meaningful positive, but an overall rating does not replace checking the individual vehicle for open recalls.
NHTSA recall 25V-233 affected 5,637 2025 ID. Buzz vehicles because the brake-system warning light could display an incorrect symbol and color. The stated remedy was a no-cost dealer software update.
NHTSA recall 25V-269 also covered 5,637 U.S. vehicles. The affected third-row bench was designed for two seating positions and two seat belts, but its seating-surface width did not comply with the applicable federal standard for a two-position bench. The concern is that a third passenger could sit there without a corresponding seat belt. Do not assume that a particular vehicle is affected—or that its campaign is complete—without checking its VIN.
Before buying or accepting delivery of a new or used 2025 ID. Buzz:
- Ask the seller or dealer for the vehicle identification number.
- Check the VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup and Volkswagen’s owner or service system.
- Ask for written confirmation that applicable campaigns have been completed.
- For an affected vehicle, confirm the available remedy and completion status with a Volkswagen dealer.
NHTSA says recall repairs are free through the manufacturer’s dealership. A recall does not automatically make a vehicle a bad purchase, but a family-oriented vehicle should not be delivered with an unresolved safety campaign when the repair status can be verified.
Pros and cons
What it does well
- It is a genuine electric minivan rather than an SUV substitute.
- Sliding doors make child-seat loading and tight parking spaces easier.
- The high roof and upright cabin provide excellent passenger access.
- It offers flexible bench-seat and captain’s-chair configurations.
- Acceleration is strong, especially with available 4Motion.
- The cabin is distinctive, airy, and more engaging than most electric family vehicles.
- DC fast charging can reach up to 200 kW under suitable conditions.
Where it falls short
- EPA range is only 231–234 miles.
- Real-world highway range can be materially lower than the EPA estimate.
- Cargo room behind the third row is limited for a large family’s luggage.
- Maximum cargo volume requires removing the third row.
- Pricing is high relative to range and efficiency.
- 4Motion improves power and traction but slightly reduces EPA range and efficiency.
- Early vehicles require careful VIN and recall-status checks.
Who should buy the 2025 ID. Buzz?
The ID. Buzz is a strong fit if you specifically want an electric minivan and value the things that make a minivan a minivan. It suits families who regularly load children, need easy access in narrow parking spaces, have home or workplace charging, and mostly drive locally or regionally. It also appeals to buyers willing to pay more for unusual design, a spacious passenger compartment, strong acceleration, and a vehicle that does not look like another electric crossover.
It is a weaker fit if your priority is long-distance efficiency or the lowest cost of ownership. Frequent highway road-trippers should be comfortable planning charging stops around a realistic range below the EPA estimate. Buyers who regularly use all three rows while carrying substantial luggage should bring their actual bags to a test drive. Shoppers without dependable overnight or destination charging should investigate their charging arrangements before committing.

- Choose the ID. Buzz for passenger access, minivan practicality, character, and an open cabin.
- Keep shopping if you need more than roughly 230 miles of practical highway travel between charging stops.
- Compare carefully if purchase price, energy efficiency, or maximum cargo volume matters more than sliding doors.
- Choose the seating layout first if you routinely carry six or seven people; a bench and captain’s chairs solve different problems.
- Calculate the whole trip if you tow, use roof equipment, drive in cold weather, or regularly travel with a full load, because each can make charging stops more consequential.
Verdict
The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz succeeds because it is a real electric minivan. Its sliding doors, upright seating, high roof, spacious passenger cabin, and flexible rows address family problems that many three-row electric SUVs solve less naturally. Its power and fast-charging capability also keep it from feeling slow or technologically compromised.
But it asks buyers to accept a short 231–234-mile EPA range, weaker highway practicality than the headline number suggests, a premium price, limited luggage space with all rows occupied, and the need to verify recall completion on early vehicles. If you want an electric minivan, this is it. If you want the best-value or longest-range three-row EV, the ID. Buzz is only a starting point.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the real-world range of the 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz?
The 2025 ID. Buzz has an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles with rear-wheel drive and 231 miles with 4Motion all-wheel drive. Independent highway and road-trip tests have recorded less, including 190 miles in a 75-mph Car and Driver test and 213 miles in MotorTrend testing. Actual range varies with speed, weather, temperature, load, and equipment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How many people can the 2025 ID. Buzz seat?
It can seat up to seven with the appropriate second-row bench configuration. Versions with second-row captain’s chairs seat six. Some 4Motion technical configurations are identified as six-seat models, so verify the exact seating layout of the vehicle you are considering.
How much does the 2025 VW ID. Buzz cost?
Volkswagen announced starting MSRPs of $59,995 for the Pro S, $63,495 for the Pro S Plus, and $65,495 for the launch-only 1st Edition, before the $1,550 destination charge. Dealer pricing, incentives, inventory, and availability can change by location and date.
Does the 2025 ID. Buzz have any recalls?
Yes. Before buying or accepting delivery, check the VIN through NHTSA and Volkswagen. Recall 25V-233 involved an incorrect brake-system warning-light symbol and color, with a stated dealer software-update remedy. Recall 25V-269 involved the width compliance of the two-position third-row bench. Confirm the remedy and completion status for the specific vehicle; recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealership.
What is the difference between rear-wheel drive and 4Motion on the ID. Buzz?
The Pro S is rear-drive only. The Pro S Plus offers rear-wheel drive or available 4Motion, and the 1st Edition was offered with either drivetrain. Rear-drive models make 282 horsepower; available dual-motor 4Motion models make up to 335 horsepower.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the 2025 ID. Buzz for its unmatched electric-minivan practicality—sliding doors, easy access, and a genuinely family-friendly cabin—not for maximum range or value. It is the clear U.S. choice for an electric minivan, but frequent road-trippers, high-capacity luggage haulers, and shoppers focused on range per dollar should keep comparing.
