How Piastri won the Qatar Sprint
Piastri started from Sprint pole after setting a 1:20.055 in Sprint Qualifying, only 0.032 seconds faster than Russell. Norris began third, giving McLaren the front-row advantage of having both cars near the lead.
Piastri made a clean launch and controlled the race from the front. Russell held second ahead of Norris, and the leading three kept those positions to the chequered flag. Verstappen remained close enough to finish within 9.054 seconds of Piastri, but he could not break up the top-three order.
The event was a conventional short Sprint rather than a pit-stop strategy race. With only 19 laps, the decisive factors were Sprint Qualifying position, the opening-lap order, tyre performance and track-limit compliance. Formula 1’s race report highlighted the difficulty of overtaking at Lusail and the importance of managing tyre performance as the race progressed. Piastri’s advantage was comfortable, although the leading cars experienced some tyre-performance drop-off later in the Sprint.
The win was Piastri’s first Sprint victory of the 2025 season. Formula 1’s report also described it as his third Qatar Sprint victory, rather than his first Sprint win at the circuit.

Track-limits penalties changed the result behind Verstappen
Yuki Tsunoda and Kimi Antonelli each received five-second penalties for exceeding track limits. Those sanctions are included in the official classification and affected the final order and points distribution behind Verstappen.
Tsunoda was classified fifth with four points, while Antonelli was sixth with three. Antonelli’s post-race penalty specifically changed the order behind Verstappen. The official result page records both five-second penalties, so the table above reflects the final classified result rather than simply the order at the chequered flag.

Championship standings after the Sprint
Before the Qatar Sprint, Norris led both Piastri and Verstappen by 24 points. That followed the disqualification of both McLaren cars from the Las Vegas Grand Prix for excessive skid wear.
After the Sprint, the title standings at the front were:
| Position | Driver | Points | Gap to Norris |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lando Norris | 396 | — |
| 2 | Oscar Piastri | 374 | 22 |
| 3 | Max Verstappen | 371 | 25 |
Norris therefore remained first, Piastri remained second and Verstappen remained third. Piastri did not retake the championship lead; the victory simply brought him two points closer. Formula 1’s championship permutations report stated that 50 points remained available across the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix at that stage, including up to 25 points for a Grand Prix victory at each round.
How the Sprint differs from the full Qatar Grand Prix
The result above is for the Saturday Sprint only. It should not be confused with the 57-lap Qatar Grand Prix held on Sunday.

Max Verstappen won the full Grand Prix, with Piastri second and Norris fourth. That Sunday result changed the championship arithmetic again, but it is not part of the Sprint classification or the points listed in the main results table. For a permanent reference beyond this single event, The Formula One Yearbook 2025 is a relevant type of resource because it covers complete Grand Prix results and championship standings; it is a reference book, not an official FIA classification.
