The 2025 Volvo XC90 is not fully electric. In the U.S., buyers can choose between two gasoline mild hybrids, the B5 and B6, or the T8 plug-in hybrid, which can travel on electric power for a limited distance before its gasoline engine is needed. Volvo calls the refreshed version the 2025.5 XC90; it updates the design and cabin without turning the SUV into an EV.
What does “anti-EV” mean for the 2025 XC90?
It means the XC90 remains an option for buyers who do not want a fully electric SUV—not that Volvo is rejecting electrification. The B5 and B6 are gasoline mild hybrids, while the T8 is a plug-in hybrid with both a gasoline engine and electric power. Volvo describes its hybrids as part of its transition toward electrification, and the refreshed XC90’s styling draws on the brand’s electric-car design.

What changed on the 2025.5 XC90?
Volvo identifies the refreshed U.S. model as the 2025.5 XC90. Volvo’s comparison page lists an 11.2-inch display for its 2025.5–2026 grouping, versus 9 inches for model years 2016–2025. Because that comparison groups multiple model years, the 11.2-inch figure should not be treated as a specification exclusive to the 2025.5 model. Volvo’s XC90 comparison page
Which powertrain should you choose?

Volvo says the B5 and B6 use a 48V lithium-ion battery and integrated starter/generator. For the 2025.5 T8, Volvo Car USA’s January 2025 announcement gives an estimated 33 miles of electric range on an EPA cycle. Treat that as a manufacturer estimate tied to the announcement, not a guarantee of real-world range. Does the XC90 offer six or seven seats?
Volvo offers the XC90 with either six or seven seats. In the 2025.5 six-seat layout, the second row uses captain’s chairs with integrated armrests and cupholders. How should you decide between an XC90 hybrid and the EX90?
- Choose among the XC90 powertrains based on whether you want a mild hybrid that does not require plug-in charging, or a plug-in hybrid whose electric driving capability makes charging relevant.
- Compare the exact model year and trim before using a price or range figure: Volvo announced distinct MSRPs for 2025 and 2025.5, and its current specification pages may cover newer configurations.
- Pick six or seven seats according to your passenger needs, then check the available trim and powertrain combinations.
- Consider the EX90 if your requirement is a fully electric Volvo SUV of similar size; the XC90 itself is not the all-electric choice.
