The 2025 Volvo EX90 makes a strong first impression as a quiet, smooth-riding electric SUV for long highway drives. But the September 2024 launch drive also found software and driver-assistance frustrations, and a cramped third row for adults. Current Canadian specifications have since changed some of the picture, so buyers should confirm equipment and software on the exact vehicle they are considering.
How does the EX90 ride and drive?
In a short drive in Newport Beach, California, published September 8, 2024, MobileSyrup’s Ted Kritsonis found the EX90 composed and quiet on the road. He described its air suspension as having soft and firm settings: soft was the default, while firm gave the SUV a more sporting feel. The drive did not encounter conditions that fully challenged the suspension, so this is an early impression rather than a comprehensive ride evaluation.
Kritsonis wrote that “the EX90 may be bigger and heavier for Volvo’s EV standards, but it is a smooth ride all the way, and there are a few reasons for that.” He also called it “a great cruising and road trip SUV that shouldn’t be hard to relax in.” Both comments reflect that brief launch drive, not a long-term or instrumented test. Read the MobileSyrup test drive.
Which powertrain and range figures apply?
The 2024 launch review described two all-wheel-drive Twin Motor versions. Its figures were 402 hp and 568 lb-ft for Twin Motor, and 510 hp and 671 lb-ft for Twin Motor Performance. The review listed a 111 kWh gross battery (107 kWh usable), up to 495 km of range, and DC charging up to 250 kW.

- Brand new box. Real rubber tires. Has steerable wheels. Officially licensed product. Has opening hood and front doors. Made of diecast with some plastic parts. Manufacturer's original unopened packaging. Detailed interior, exterior, engine compartment. Dimensions approximately L-7.5, W-3, H-2.25 inches.
Volvo Cars Canada’s current product page lists the Twin Motor Performance at up to 510 hp, an estimated 0–100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds, and up to 499 km of estimated range. These are Canadian-market manufacturer estimates; do not treat the newer 499 km figure as a revision to every market’s rating or every configuration. Volvo says actual range and energy use depend on conditions including temperature, equipment, battery and vehicle condition, and that its preliminary figures are not guaranteed. Check Volvo Cars Canada’s EX90 specifications and qualifications.
How long does charging take?
Volvo Canada estimates around 30 minutes to charge from 10 to 80% at a 250 kW DC fast-charging station. The company also says a ten-minute DC top-up can add up to 170 km of range; that is a manufacturer claim, not a promised result. Charging speed varies with the station, battery temperature and condition, and other factors, so the 30-minute estimate is best understood as a planning reference rather than a fixed stop duration.

For home charging, Volvo Canada’s information names ChargePoint and Qmerit for charger installation after purchase. Those references do not establish that a particular charger is right for every home or that installation is available on the same terms everywhere. Confirm compatibility, electrical requirements, installation arrangements, and local availability before buying equipment. See Volvo Canada’s home-charging information.
Is the EX90 practical for a family?
Volvo Canada lists six- and seven-seat configurations. Its published cargo volumes with all backrests raised are 384 litres for the seven-seat layout and 377 litres for the six-seat layout. Those figures describe the space behind the raised rows, so families should assess the actual luggage they expect to carry with every seat in use.

The launch reviewer found the third row tight, particularly for adults. That makes a hands-on seating check important: bring the people who will use the back seats, and try access, legroom, and cargo space with the family’s usual combination of occupants and bags. Volvo’s Canadian page shows Plus and Ultra equipment levels, with front-seat massage and active chassis identified among Ultra additions; equipment and availability can vary by market, trim, and delivery.

The September 2024 MobileSyrup drive reported that Apple CarPlay was not operational in its launch vehicle and that some driver-assistance functions were unavailable at that time. The review also described Pilot Assist as finicky about detecting the driver’s grip, with the system disengaging after the vehicle remained idle for five seconds. These are observations about the vehicle and software during that drive, not a statement about every EX90 currently on sale.

Volvo Cars Canada now lists wireless Apple CarPlay as standard. Its product information also warns that feature availability can vary and that some functions may arrive later by over-the-air update or through a dealer. Because software versions, equipment, and delivery status can differ, ask the retailer to demonstrate the specific vehicle’s functions and verify what is active at handover. Quick Recap
What should buyers verify before choosing one?
- Seating: Confirm whether the six- or seven-seat configuration suits your passengers, and test the third row with the adults or children who will ride there.
- Trim and powertrain: Check the exact Plus or Ultra equipment and whether the vehicle is Twin Motor or Twin Motor Performance; do not assume a specification or feature carries across configurations.
- Range and charging: Confirm the local-market estimate for the exact build, then plan around real-world variation rather than the maximum range or best-case charging claim.
- Software: Ask which features are active now, which depend on an update, and whether any dealer work remains before delivery.
- Price: MobileSyrup’s 2024 article reported historical Canadian launch figures of CAD $110,000 for Plus and CAD $119,039 for Ultra with options. These are not current quotes; obtain current local pricing for the vehicle and options you are considering.
