But it has not become a quick or especially spacious class leader. Delayed powertrain response, modest cargo capacity and the loss of the previous model’s optional third row are meaningful trade-offs.
What changed for the 2025 Tiguan?
This is a U.S.-market review of the redesigned 2025 model, not the European Tiguan or a later model year. The U.S. Tiguan is now a two-row, five-seat compact SUV; the prior U.S. model’s optional third row is gone. The redesign’s clearest gains are in cabin presentation, technology, storage layout and everyday driving composure.
MotorTrend’s first drive found a more finished interior, useful storage and a quiet highway ride, along with a comfortable rear seat. Its drive was brief, so its early impressions are best read as a first look rather than a long-term assessment. How does the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan drive?
The Tiguan’s character is composed and comfort-oriented, with steering and suspension that reviewers considered improved. The persistent weakness is what happens when the driver asks for power quickly: acceleration from a stop can feel delayed, and the automatic transmission may take time to respond or downshift.

Powertrain and drivetrain choices
U.S. models use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 201 hp and an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is offered; 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on lower trims and standard on SEL R-Line. Capital One Auto Navigator reports torque of 207 lb-ft for FWD and 221 lb-ft for AWD. Capital One Auto Navigator’s review notes that its tested SE R-Line and loaded SEL R-Line felt responsive and confidence-inspiring on roads around Bozeman, but also describes a pause when accelerating from a stop and slow transmission reactions.
Comfort versus quickness
Car and Driver recorded 8.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in its tested R-Line 4Motion. That is a publication test result for that configuration, not a prediction for every trim or condition; its review also characterizes initial acceleration as pokier than many competitors. Car and Driver’s Tiguan coverage reports a comfortable but somewhat stiff ride and improved steering weight.

MotorTrend measured a 27.6-second figure-eight lap and 0.62 g average for the Tiguan. In the same publication’s comparison, the tested Honda CR-V EX-L AWD recorded 28.0 seconds and 0.59 g, while the Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD recorded 27.6 seconds and 0.60 g. MotorTrend also measured 0.79 g on the Tiguan skidpad, while noting that throttle and transmission response temper its quickness. Those numbers suggest capable handling-test performance, not a transformation into a sporty SUV. MotorTrend’s comparison and test account supplies the configuration-specific context.
Is the cabin better?
Yes: cabin quality and presentation are among the redesign’s strongest improvements. Reviewers point to better materials, substantial displays and a more considered storage layout. The shifter is mounted on the steering column, freeing space in the center console.

Most trims have a 12.9-inch central screen; the SEL R-Line gets a 15.0-inch screen. Large displays make the interior feel modern, but the touch-based temperature controls remain a usability compromise compared with physical controls. MotorTrend also reports a quiet highway cabin and comfortable rear seating; these are review impressions, not quantified noise or seat-space measurements. How practical is the two-row Tiguan?
The five-seat layout gives up the previous U.S. Tiguan’s optional third row, so families who need occasional extra seats should account for that change. Cargo space is another clear compromise in MotorTrend’s measurements: 26.5 cubic feet behind the second row and 58.9 cubic feet with it folded.

The choice depends on which compromise matters most. The Tiguan’s case is its improved cabin, comfort and polished road manners. Its competitors’ cited advantage is cargo volume, while powertrain response and fuel economy deserve attention during a test drive and specification comparison.

- Choose by space: MotorTrend’s cited CR-V and RAV4 cargo figures are substantially higher than the Tiguan’s.
- Choose by acceleration feel: The Tiguan’s initial response and downshifts drew criticism, and Car and Driver’s tested R-Line 4Motion ran 0–60 mph in 8.5 seconds. Compare the exact trim and drivetrain you would buy.
- Choose by fuel economy and powertrain type: MotorTrend lists 22/30/25 mpg city/highway/combined for its tested AWD R-Line. Competitor hybrid availability is another relevant shopping distinction; verify current model-year offerings and EPA estimates for the specific versions under consideration.

Who should consider the redesigned Tiguan?
The 2025 Tiguan makes the strongest case for buyers who value a more refined-feeling cabin, a comfortable rear seat and composed road manners more than maximum cargo capacity or eager low-speed acceleration. It is less compelling if you need the old optional third row, routinely carry bulky cargo, or prioritize immediate throttle response. A test drive should include stop-and-go traffic and a firm acceleration request, since those are the situations in which reviewers noticed hesitation.
