The 2025 Volvo XC90 is a substantially refreshed version of Volvo’s continuing hybrid flagship—not an all-new electric SUV. It keeps mild-hybrid B5 and B6 versions alongside the T8 plug-in hybrid, while Volvo offers the fully electric EX90 as a separate, similar-size alternative. The refresh brings a redesigned cabin and larger touchscreen, plus exterior and chassis updates Volvo says improve comfort and quietness.
What changed in the 2025 Volvo XC90 refresh?
Volvo’s September 2024 reveal presented the update as a mid-cycle refresh. The UK launch announcement specifies a revised grille, slimmer headlights, a reshaped bonnet (hood) and front bumper. Inside, the dashboard and door panels are updated around a larger, higher-resolution center display. Volvo’s US materials also identify matrix-design headlights, revised suspension and additional acoustic material. Comfort and cabin-quietness benefits are Volvo’s claims; the available sources do not include independent testing of those changes.
For US model-year comparisons, Volvo describes the refreshed configuration as 2025.5 onward. Its current comparison lists an 11.2-inch center screen, compared with 9 inches on earlier model years, and says pixel density is 21% higher. The UK launch announcement also specifies an 11.2-inch display. Those numbers describe the screen update, not an independently measured improvement in usability.
Which XC90 powertrains are available?
The range retains two kinds of hybrid rather than replacing them with a battery-only XC90. Volvo’s US page lists mild-hybrid B5 and B6 versions and the T8 plug-in hybrid; all three have standard all-wheel drive in the US market. The XC90 is not fully electric. Volvo’s similar-size battery-electric alternative is the EX90.

Mild-hybrid B5 and B6
A mild hybrid is the simpler choice for a buyer who wants a conventional petrol vehicle with hybrid assistance but does not plan to charge it from an external power source. Volvo UK’s October 2024 launch announcement listed B5 AWD with 250 hp. That is a UK launch specification, not a universal figure for every market or current model-year configuration. The supplied US page identifies B5 and B6 availability but does not state their output figures.
T8 plug-in hybrid
The T8 combines a petrol engine and an electric motor with a rechargeable battery, so it can cover some journeys using electric power alone when charged. Volvo UK’s 2024 launch specification described a 310 hp petrol engine paired with a 145 hp electric motor and quoted 0–62 mph in 5.4 seconds. These are UK launch figures, not independently tested performance or a guarantee for all markets.

Volvo reported up to 32 miles of electric-only driving for the T8 under the US EPA testing cycle in its 2024 US reveal. Its UK announcement quoted up to 44 miles under the WLTP cycle. These figures use different test procedures and should not be treated as a direct comparison; actual electric range varies with conditions and use.
Volvo UK also said recharging from empty to full takes from three hours, but its announcement did not specify the charging equipment or installation conditions behind that figure. Confirm charging requirements for the specific vehicle and setup before relying on a charge-time estimate.

How to choose between the mild hybrid and T8
The practical distinction is whether plugging in fits your routine. A mild hybrid avoids the need to arrange regular charging. The T8 adds electric-only driving potential, but making use of that capability depends on having access to charging and plugging in consistently.
- Consider a B5 or B6 if you prefer a conventional refuelling routine or lack convenient charging access.
- Consider the T8 if you can charge regularly and want the option of electric-only trips, while retaining a petrol engine for longer journeys.
- Consider the EX90 instead if your priority is a fully electric Volvo in a similar size class rather than a hybrid XC90.
Volvo said that 48% of distance driven by its long-range plug-in hybrid cars in global markets uses electric-only power. That is a company-reported fleet-level average, not an XC90-specific result or a prediction of an individual owner’s electric-driving share.

Seating and cargo space
The seating offer depends on market and configuration. Volvo UK’s launch announcement says the seven-seat layout remains. Volvo’s US page says buyers can choose six or seven seats; the six-seat version has second-row captain’s chairs with integrated armrests and cupholders.
For UK versions, Volvo quoted 680 litres of cargo space for mild hybrids and 640 litres for plug-in hybrids, measured to the glass line with the two rearmost seats folded. These are market-specific figures with a stated measurement method; they should not be assumed to match another market’s published capacity figure.

Volvo Car UK’s announcement on 30 October 2024 gave these on-the-road launch prices. They are historical UK prices, not current offers or US pricing.

What the refresh means for owners and new buyers
For an earlier XC90 owner, the most tangible cabin change in Volvo’s published comparison is the move from a 9-inch display to an 11.2-inch screen, alongside revised dashboard and door panels. New buyers should weigh that interface update against the powertrain choice: the refreshed XC90 still offers both a non-plug-in mild hybrid and a chargeable plug-in hybrid, rather than forcing a move to a fully electric vehicle.
Volvo CEO Jim Rowan described the XC90 as a long-running customer favorite when the company revealed the refresh in September 2024. That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent sales ranking or customer survey. Volvo also described the vehicle as one of the safest cars available; that statement should likewise be understood as Volvo’s claim, not independent evidence of safety superiority.
