What the 2025 Jetta GLI offers
Volkswagen lists a 2.0-liter turbocharged TSI four-cylinder producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the U.S.-market 2025 GLI. Buyers could choose a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG automatic; both configurations are front-wheel drive.
Volkswagen’s performance page calls the manual a way to make driving “just a little more engaging, a little more fun.” That is the automaker’s promotional description, not an independent road-test finding. The choice itself is meaningful: the GLI preserves a conventional clutch pedal and gear lever while also offering an automatic option.
How it balances sport and daily comfort
Car and Driver characterizes the GLI as deftly balancing athleticism and comfort, and praises its supple ride, manual availability, and practical sedan format. That combination makes it a plausible daily driver for someone who wants a sportier engine and chassis without giving up ride comfort. This is the publication’s evaluation; it is not a claim based on a test drive for this article.

The compromise is that the GLI is not necessarily the class’s most focused handling choice. Car and Driver identifies rivals with sportier handling as a drawback, alongside cabin plastics it considers low-rent and seats it says need more support. Those criticisms matter if cornering precision, seat bolstering, or a more upscale cabin ranks above everyday composure.

The equipment suggests that the GLI’s comfort-oriented character does not come from ignoring chassis hardware. But specifications alone cannot establish that it will feel as sharp as a more handling-focused competitor.
GLI, Civic Si, or Elantra N?
The Honda Civic Si and Hyundai Elantra N are useful alternatives to consider, but there is no universal winner. Compare the specific model years and trims on the qualities you value: price, manual-transmission availability, ride comfort, and how strongly each car prioritizes handling. Car and Driver’s framing places the GLI on the comfort-and-composure side of that balance, while describing some rivals as sportier in their handling focus.
