Its 445-hp, 910-lb-ft V8 and 10-speed automatic bring substantial towing capability, while reviewers found it smooth and confident under load. The “best of both worlds” label has limits: unloaded ride quality, parking and maneuverability, and cabin technology are weak points, and the truck remains very large.
What makes the diesel Silverado 2500HD appealing?
The combination is the point: serious heavy-duty capability with road manners that reviewers found easier to live with than the truck’s size might suggest. New Atlas described the tested diesel as smooth and confident when hauling or towing. MotorTrend reported towing two vehicles for a little over 1,600 miles with a 2022 Duramax Crew Cab 4×4; that is a report about its test truck and trip, not a guarantee for every configuration or trailer.
It is still a large HD pickup, not a nimble everyday vehicle. New Atlas found it challenging to park and less composed around town, and said the unloaded ride could be jouncy. The best-of-both-worlds verdict therefore fits a buyer who regularly needs towing or hauling ability and values a composed drive under load—not someone expecting a half-ton truck’s footprint or ride.
How do the diesel and gas engines compare?
| 2022 Silverado 2500HD engine | Rated output | Transmission | What the figures mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 | 445 hp; 910 lb-ft | 10-speed automatic | Higher rated torque and a higher listed maximum towing figure in Chevrolet’s summary sheet; actual capability depends on configuration. |
| 6.6-liter gas V8 | 401 hp; 464 lb-ft | Six-speed automatic | Chevrolet’s standard engine; assess it against the truck’s intended work and the specific vehicle’s ratings. |
These are Chevrolet’s published 2022 ratings, not a prediction of acceleration, fuel cost, or a particular truck’s towing capacity. The diesel’s torque and transmission make it the more compelling choice for frequent, demanding towing, but the figures alone do not establish that it will be the better purchase for every owner.

What can it tow—and what should you verify?
Chevrolet published maximum ratings of 18,500 lb for both conventional towing and fifth-wheel/gooseneck towing on the diesel. Those are maxima, not ratings that apply to every Silverado 2500HD. Chevrolet’s 2022 product sheet and 2022 trailering guide show that ratings depend on vehicle configuration.
- Match the rating to the exact cab, bed, drive system, wheels, and equipment—not just the model name or engine.
- Account for passengers, cargo, options, and accessories, which reduce available capacity.
- For a fifth-wheel, check payload and pin weight as well as trailer weight. A high maximum tow rating does not prove the truck has enough payload for a particular loaded trailer.
- Use the vehicle’s door-label ratings and consult the owner’s manual. Chevrolet’s product sheet advises: “Before you buy a vehicle or use it for trailering, carefully review the Trailering section of the Owner’s Manual.”
A fifth-wheel hitch and vehicle-specific installation kit can make sense for a compatible trailer, but fitment must be checked against the truck’s cab, bed, frame or rail setup, load, and ratings.

What fuel economy did reviewers see?
The available numbers are road-test results, not EPA estimates or promises about owner mileage. New Atlas reported nearly 20 mpg in an unloaded highway test with one person in the truck; it noted that altitude, crosswinds, and load affect mileage. Car and Driver recorded 19 mpg on its 75-mph highway route and explains that the EPA does not test vehicles as heavy as this class.
Neither result describes towing fuel economy, city driving, or a representative owner average. They also cannot establish whether the diesel’s purchase and operating costs will pay back for a particular buyer; that depends on actual use, fuel prices, acquisition cost, and maintenance.

What are the everyday drawbacks?
Size and unloaded ride
The Silverado 2500HD is difficult to place in tight parking and less nimble in town than a smaller pickup. New Atlas also found its ride jouncy when unloaded. Buyers who spend most days without cargo or a trailer should drive it in those conditions before deciding its work capability outweighs the daily compromises.
Cabin technology and road feel
New Atlas criticized the infotainment as dated or sometimes slow. Car and Driver also noted cabin and steering shortcomings relative to rivals. Equipment varies by trim and configuration, so check the actual truck rather than assuming every 2022 model has the same screens, cameras, or trailering features.

Which equipment should used-truck shoppers check?
Chevrolet offered different cab and body combinations by trim, optional four-wheel drive, and the Multi-Flex tailgate for 2022. Available camera views and trailering features also depend on equipment. Chevrolet’s product sheet and trailering guide are useful references, but verify the equipment installed on the specific vehicle.
Chevrolet lists available hitch and trailer camera views; some require an accessory camera and installation, and not every view works with every trailer. Confirm compatibility among the truck’s installed system, the camera equipment, and the trailer before relying on a view.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- 1/27 scale measuring 8x3x3 inches
- Made of diecast metal with plastic parts, detailed interior, rubber tires
- Openable front doors.
- Ship in a corrugated box for better protection. Not a RC, not battery operated, not building kit
Who should choose the Duramax?
- Consider it if you tow or haul frequently, need the diesel’s rated torque, and can confirm that the exact truck’s ratings cover your loaded setup.
- Compare it with the gas V8 if heavy towing is occasional or your priorities include purchase and running costs; the highway test figures alone do not show a diesel payback.
- Think carefully if most driving is unloaded, urban, or in tight parking. The truck’s size, unloaded ride, and cabin-tech criticisms are part of the ownership trade-off.
