The conventional 2025 Toyota Prius pairs standout fuel economy with stronger performance, modern standard tech and a striking redesign. Its biggest compromise is rear-seat headroom: the lower roofline can make the back seat a poor fit for some passengers. Whether that matters depends on who rides in your car, so check the seating position in person before buying.
1. Fuel economy is excellent—but depends on the version
The most efficient 2025 Prius is the front-wheel-drive LE. Toyota’s 2025 fleet guide gives it EPA estimates of 57 mpg city, 56 highway and 57 combined; Car and Driver reports the same city and highway figures. Other trims and all-wheel drive have lower estimates, so the LE rating should not be treated as the figure for every Prius.

Figures are EPA estimates reported for the 2025 model year by Toyota’s 2025 Fleet Guide and Car and Driver. Actual fuel economy varies with conditions and driving style. Car and Driver also recorded 49 mpg in its 75-mph highway test of a front-wheel-drive Limited; that instrumented result is not an EPA rating.
2. Acceleration and handling make it more engaging
The Prius has 194 horsepower with front-wheel drive and 196 horsepower with all-wheel drive, according to Car and Driver. The publication measured 7.1 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in a front-drive Limited. That result applies to its test car, not every trim or drivetrain. Car and Driver also describes the car as satisfying to accelerate and handle—a welcome change for a model often chosen primarily for efficiency.

3. The redesign has real visual character
The lower, sleeker shape gives the Prius a more expressive presence than its familiar upright predecessors. That is a matter of taste, and the same design choice has a practical downside for rear passengers. For 2025, Toyota adds a Nightshade grade with blacked-out exterior and interior details, according to its 2025 Prius announcement.
4. Standard driver assistance and phone connectivity are useful
Toyota says the 2025 Prius includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Car and Driver lists automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist as standard. These systems can support a driver, but their presence is not a guarantee that a collision will be prevented.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also listed as standard by Car and Driver. The LE and XLE use an 8-inch infotainment screen; the Limited has a 12.3-inch screen, which is also optional on the XLE. The gauge position can be difficult to see depending on steering-wheel placement, so check that you can read it comfortably from your normal driving position.
5. U.S. warranty coverage includes hybrid components and maintenance
Car and Driver lists U.S. coverage of 3 years or 36,000 miles for the limited warranty, 5 years or 60,000 miles for the powertrain, and 10 years or 150,000 miles for hybrid components. It also lists complimentary maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles. These are the terms reported for the U.S. specification; confirm the warranty and maintenance terms for your market and vehicle configuration with Toyota.

The drawback: less rear-seat headroom
Car and Driver says the roofline is 2 inches lower than the previous generation and reduces rear-seat headroom. The Prius still seats five, but the number of seats alone does not tell you whether the back will fit your passengers comfortably. Have the people who will ride there sit in the car and assess headroom and posture before committing.
Car and Driver also lists occasional engine droning among its criticisms. Consumer Reports’ search-result summary similarly says the newer car’s performance-oriented design reduced some cabin-space attributes of earlier Priuses, though its report was not available to inspect; treat that as limited corroboration rather than a detailed independent assessment.

Is the 2025 Toyota Prius a good buy?
It is a compelling choice if you want high fuel economy and value the Prius’s sharper performance, updated technology and distinctive styling. The right comparison is with the actual trim and drivetrain you would buy: check its EPA rating, test the rear-seat fit, make sure the gauges are visible from your driving position, and confirm which screen and warranty terms apply. The available sources do not provide a comprehensive head-to-head comparison with every compact hybrid or used Prius, so those checks matter more than assuming one model or trim is best for everyone.
