Toyota’s U.S. announcement on September 24, 2024, introduced the eight-speed DAT as an option for the 2025 model year. The six-speed manual remained available. Toyota also announced 295 lb-ft of torque, compared with the 273 lb-ft figure it cited for the preceding GR Corolla. These are Toyota-announced specifications, not independent test results. The headline idea of “broader appeal” describes Toyota’s reason for adding the transmission. The available announcement does not establish how many customers chose the DAT or whether it expanded the car’s buyer base.
How does the eight-speed DAT work?
The DAT has eight forward speeds and steering-wheel paddle shifters. Toyota says its software monitors brake and accelerator inputs to anticipate the driver’s intended gear selection. Toyota described its design goal as “the fastest possible downshift speed,” but the announcement does not provide instrumented comparisons against the manual or other transmissions. Choose based on the interaction you want: the DAT offers automatic operation and paddle control, while the manual leaves clutch and gear selection to the driver. Toyota’s release does not establish that either transmission is objectively quicker or more enjoyable.

What other 2025 changes did Toyota announce?
Toyota described suspension tuning and front-bumper and cooling changes for the 2025 model. Its announcement also identified an available sub-radiator and a DAT-only automatic-transmission-fluid cooler. U.S. grades and launch-announced price
Toyota named Core, Premium, and the new Premium Plus as the U.S. grades. In its September 24, 2024 announcement, the company gave a starting MSRP of $38,860, excluding a $1,135 dealer processing and handling fee. Keep U.S. and Japan specifications separate
Toyota also announced an evolved GR Corolla for Japan on February 4, 2025. Its Japanese-market release lists both GR-DAT and six-speed manual versions of the RZ grade, with prices of 5,980,000 yen and 5,680,000 yen respectively, including Japanese consumption tax. Those are Japan-market prices and should not be used to estimate U.S. pricing. One ownership detail: a Toyota-listed cargo mat
Toyota’s U.S. parts catalog lists an all-weather cargo mat, part PT908-12221-02, under the 2025 GR Corolla category.
