The 2008 Tesla Roadster: How Fast It Was, How Far It Went, and Why It Mattered

The original Tesla Roadster was a high-performance battery-electric sports car—and Tesla’s first production car. Its specifications changed during 2008: early cars with an interim transmission were rated at 5.7 seconds from 0–60 mph, while Tesla later announced a single-speed powertrain and a 244-mile EPA combined range. Those are dated company figures, not one universal specification for every Roadster.

Why the original Roadster mattered

Tesla unveiled the Roadster as a prototype on July 19, 2006, according to the company’s March 2008 production announcement. In March 2008, Tesla said regular production had begun and described the 2008 model year as sold out at that time. CEO Ze’ev Drori’s announcement put it plainly: “The 2008 model year is sold out.” That was a contemporaneous statement, not a final lifetime production or sales tally.

The car made a battery-electric powertrain the centerpiece of a performance sports car at a time when electric vehicles were not widely associated with sports-car acceleration or long-distance range. Tesla’s launch announcement listed 3.9 seconds from 0–60 mph, a 13,000-rpm redline, and 135 MPG equivalent. These are Tesla’s March 2008 claims, not results from an independent test. How fast was the 2008 Tesla Roadster?

The answer depends on which powertrain configuration and which dated Tesla statement you mean. Early production cars used an interim transmission, so their acceleration figure differed from the later launch-announcement specification.

Configuration or statement 0–60 mph figure What the figure means
Early cars with interim transmission 5.7 seconds Tesla’s January 2008 regulatory-approval announcement said early units would be limited to this acceleration while the company pursued a permanent solution.
Permanent solution target Original four-second target Tesla said its permanent solution supported the original target; this is not the same as a separately stated result for every car.
March 2008 production announcement 3.9 seconds Tesla’s launch announcement gave this figure for the 2008 Roadster.

The figures describe different points in the rollout, rather than contradictory measurements of one unchanged version. In January, Tesla said series production was scheduled to begin March 17 and explained that the interim transmission affected early cars. Tesla’s January 2008 regulatory-approval announcement.

Did the first Tesla Roadster have a two-speed transmission?

Not every Roadster used the same transmission arrangement. Tesla’s early cars used an interim transmission; in September 2008 the company announced that it had selected BorgWarner to produce a single-speed gearbox. Tesla said the new powertrain increased peak motor torque from 286 Nm (211 lb-ft) to 380 Nm (280 lb-ft), and that customers with the interim transmission could receive a powertrain upgrade at no cost.

The distinction matters when discussing “the” 2008 Roadster: the early interim configuration and the later single-speed setup were stages in the car’s production evolution. Tesla CTO JB Straubel described the revised setup as “In fact, the new setup is superior in almost every way.” That is his statement in Tesla’s announcement, not an independent assessment. How far could the original Roadster go on a charge?

Tesla’s range figures changed across its announcements and later filings. The September 2008 gearbox announcement said the revised powertrain achieved 244 miles of EPA combined range, up from a previously announced 221 miles. A later Tesla filing hosted by the SEC reported a 236-mile EPA combined two-cycle city/highway range and approximately 53 kWh of usable battery energy. These figures come from different dated company sources and contexts; they should not be collapsed into a single universal range rating.

What was in the Roadster’s battery pack?

Tesla’s 2008 owner manual describes a lithium-ion battery pack containing 6,831 cells, weighing 992 lb (450 kg), with a listed high-voltage output of 366 V DC. These are historical specifications from the manual, not a description of a particular surviving car’s present condition or usable range.
