Mercedes-Benz is putting its evolved 4.0-litre M177 V8 into several current or announced performance models, and its corporate strategy points to a next-generation electrified V8 for AMG. That makes the M177 Evo evidence that the V8 remains part of Mercedes’ performance plans, not proof that every future performance Mercedes will use this engine.
Is Mercedes bringing back the V8?
The evidence points less to a return than to a continued evolution: Mercedes-Benz is updating and deploying its V8 in new applications while signaling that V8 technology will remain in AMG’s future portfolio. The company describes the revised engine as a basis for a new generation of V8s and frames some of its changes around future regulatory requirements.

M177 Evo is an evolved version of Mercedes-Benz’s 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine. “Evo” denotes an updated engine application, not a guarantee that every vehicle using it has identical hardware or output. Mercedes lists specific revisions for the S-Class version; its GLE and GLS announcement describes fundamental engineering changes without establishing that each S-Class component revision is shared unchanged by those SUVs.

Which Mercedes models get the new V8?
Mercedes-Benz’s announcements and press materials identify these applications. The CLE example is a special-edition model, not evidence that the whole CLE range receives the engine.

What changed in the S-Class M177 Evo?
For the S-Class application, Mercedes-Benz lists a refined injection system, optimized intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft, a flat-plane crankshaft with a new firing order, and changes to the compressor wheel and turbocharger housing. The company says these revisions support responsiveness and efficiency; those benefits remain manufacturer claims in the absence of independent tests.
The SUV announcement refers more broadly to fundamental modifications intended to help prepare the engine for upcoming regulations. It does not specify that the SUVs receive every listed S-Class component change in precisely the same form.

Will future AMG models still have a V8?
Mercedes-Benz Group’s 2025 Capital Market Day says AMG’s portfolio from 2026 onward will include a next-generation, high-tech electrified V8. This is a clear strategic signal that V8 power remains planned for AMG, but it does not identify the engine designation, exact vehicle applications, launch dates or specifications. In particular, it does not confirm that every future AMG V8 will be an M177 Evo.
The “electrified” description applies to that stated next-generation V8 direction. The available information here does not establish the system’s configuration or whether it is the same across future models.

What the M177 Evo story does—and does not—prove
- Established: Mercedes-Benz identifies M177 Evo applications in the S 580, updated GLE 63 S and GLS 63, and the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung.
- Established: The S-Class engine has disclosed mechanical revisions, including a flat-plane crankshaft and new firing order.
- Signaled, not fully mapped: AMG’s stated future portfolio includes a next-generation electrified V8 from 2026 onward, without a complete model rollout plan.
- Not established by the cited material: Independent acceleration, fuel-consumption, emissions-compliance or comparative test results.
For a meaningful comparison between V8 versions, match the vehicle and market first, then compare published power and torque, the disclosed degree of electrification, body style and specified engineering changes. A peak power figure alone cannot establish vehicle-level performance or efficiency.
