The new SUV rides on Toyota’s TNGA-F truck platform and offers two 2.4-liter turbocharged powertrains, nine grades, and a choice of 2WD, part-time 4WD, or full-time 4WD configurations. These are Toyota’s announced specifications—not independent test results or a statement of current inventory or pricing.
What changed for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner?
The 2025 model is the sixth generation of Toyota’s body-on-frame SUV. Toyota says it shares the TNGA-F platform with Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra, and Sequoia. The chassis uses a boxed steel ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension, and multi-link coil-spring rear suspension. Toyota reported that more than 3 million 4Runners had been sold over 40 years; that is the company’s own figure, attributed in its April 2024 announcement to Toyota executive Dave Christ.
The redesign keeps the 4Runner’s truck-based construction while adding a turbocharged four-cylinder lineup, including a hybrid option. Toyota’s reveal and launch details are in its April 9, 2024 announcement and December 10, 2024 launch announcement.
2025 Toyota 4Runner specs: engines, output, mileage, and towing

The i-FORCE MAX pairs the turbo engine with an electric motor and a 1.87-kWh nickel-metal hydride battery. Toyota gives the hybrid’s maximum system output as 326 hp and 465 lb-ft; those are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. Toyota’s later 4Runner overview also lists up to 6,000 pounds of towing capacity for i-FORCE MAX. Treat that as Toyota’s stated maximum for the hybrid, not a universal rating for every powertrain and configuration. Confirm a specific vehicle’s rating and equipment before towing.

The mileage figures are Toyota’s EPA-estimated highway figures from the December 2024 launch announcement. They are not real-world fuel-economy guarantees, and the “up to” qualifier matters: the figure can depend on configuration.

All i-FORCE MAX grades have four-wheel drive, according to Toyota. The lineup therefore does not make the hybrid a stand-alone trim: it is standard on three grades and available on three others.
Drivetrains and off-road hardware
Toyota describes 2WD, part-time 4WD, and full-time 4WD configurations across the 2025 lineup. The April reveal details several distinctions:

- 4WD models use a two-speed transfer case with high- and low-range gearing, A-TRAC, and Auto LSD.
- An electronically locking rear differential is standard on TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.
- Limited i-FORCE MAX can be configured with full-time 4WD and a center locking differential; Toyota says this setup is standard on Platinum.
Toyota also describes Multi-Terrain Select as operating in 4WD-High and 4WD-Low. CRAWL Control is intended as low-speed off-road cruise control, while Downhill Assist Control helps manage descents. A Stabilizer Bar Disconnect Mechanism is newly available. These are manufacturer descriptions of equipment and function, not assurances of traction or control in every terrain or condition.
Trailhunter and TRD Pro: two different off-road approaches
Trailhunter: factory overlanding equipment
Toyota positions Trailhunter as a factory-developed overlanding grade. Its announced equipment includes an ARB co-designed roof rack, Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks with rear remote reservoirs, 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires, rock rails, high-strength steel skid plates, and a high-mount air intake. It also includes an integrated 20-inch LED light bar, RIGID color-selectable LED fog lamps, auxiliary switches and wiring for customization, and a 2400W AC inverter serving cabin and cargo-area outlets.

Those components are associated with the Trailhunter as Toyota announced it; that does not establish that similarly named aftermarket listings are the same parts or fit every 2025 4Runner. Confirm exact grade and configuration fitment before buying accessories.
TRD Pro: a separate performance-oriented off-road grade
TRD Pro is distinct from Trailhunter. Toyota announced FOX shocks and 33-inch Toyo tires for the TRD Pro, while the Trailhunter’s equipment list emphasizes its overlanding setup. Both have i-FORCE MAX standard, but the named equipment and intended configurations differ.

Other grade roles
The lineup also spans road-oriented TRD Sport grades, off-road-focused TRD Off-Road grades, and the more comfort- and equipment-oriented Limited and Platinum. Exact features vary by grade and configuration; Toyota’s broad labels alone are not a substitute for checking a vehicle’s equipment list.

Toyota lists an 8-inch touchscreen as standard, with an available 14-inch touchscreen running Toyota Audio Multimedia. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are included. Lower grades have a standard 7-inch gauge cluster, while higher grades receive a 12.3-inch digital cluster. A power rear window is standard; a power liftgate is available. Availability of other equipment varies by grade.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the 2025 grades, according to Toyota. Its listed features include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. These are driver-assistance systems with operating conditions and limitations; they do not make the 4Runner autonomous.
What did the 2025 4Runner cost at launch?
Toyota’s December 10, 2024 launch announcement listed a starting MSRP of $40,770, plus a $1,450 delivery processing and handling fee, and said dealerships were expected to receive 2025 models in January 2025. Those are dated launch figures, not a current dealer quote or today’s transaction price. Toyota’s launch announcement is the source for the price and arrival timing.

Which 2025 4Runner configuration fits your use?
- For a simpler road-focused setup: Compare the SR5 and TRD Sport grades, then verify drivetrain and equipment for the exact vehicle.
- For factory off-road hardware: Look at TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium, where i-FORCE MAX is available rather than standard.
- For a hybrid with full-time 4WD: Toyota identifies the Limited i-FORCE MAX as configurable with full-time 4WD and a center locking differential, and says that arrangement is standard on Platinum.
- For overlanding equipment from the factory: Trailhunter is the grade with the ARB rack, Old Man Emu shocks, 33-inch tires, and other listed gear.
- For the TRD Pro package: Consider its FOX shocks and 33-inch Toyo tires as a distinct factory off-road setup, rather than treating it as another name for Trailhunter.
For any purchase decision, check the exact vehicle’s window sticker and configuration: drivetrain, hybrid availability, and grade-specific equipment change what a particular 4Runner includes.
