The brands separated in the automaker’s lineup—not from the corporate group.
Why did Ram split from Dodge?
The company’s stated reason was brand focus. FCA’s 2012 annual report said a distinct Ram identity would let the brand concentrate on how truck customers use their vehicles and which features they want. In an October 8, 2019 anniversary release, then-Ram Brand head Reid Bigland said the separation let Ram “focus solely on trucks and commercial vehicles.” (FCA 2012 annual report; FCA 2019 release)
That distinction gave the brands different roles in the lineup of the time: Ram centered on full-size pickups and commercial vehicles; Dodge offered cars, crossovers, minivans, and SUVs with a performance-oriented identity. FCA’s 2014 prospectus, for example, identified the Ram 1500 as a pickup. These are historical descriptions of the brands’ positioning, not a complete account of their current model ranges. When did Ram become its own brand?
Ram became a standalone brand in October 2009. It marked ten years as a distinct brand in 2019. The dates establish when the separation happened, but do not show that sales or market share caused it. (FCA 2019 release)

Did Ram leave Dodge’s parent company?
No. The change separated the brands, not their corporate ownership. FCA’s 2019 annual report included Dodge and Ram in the same mass-market brand portfolio and described centralized design, engineering, development, and manufacturing operations for those brands. (FCA 2019 annual report)

Was the split required by Chrysler’s 2009 restructuring?
The available corporate materials place the brand change in 2009, the year Chrysler’s restructuring also took place, but they do not establish that the restructuring legally required Ram to separate from Dodge. The stated rationale for the brand decision was to give Ram a distinct identity and a focused truck and commercial-vehicle role.
