Subaru unveiled the U.S.-market 2025 Forester Hybrid on February 6, 2025, at the Chicago Auto Show. Its next-generation series-parallel hybrid combines a newly developed 2.5-liter Boxer engine, electric motors, a lithium-ion battery and a Lineartronic CVT. Subaru rates the system at 194 total horsepower and quotes EPA-estimated fuel economy of 35 mpg city, 34 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined.
What Subaru’s Strong Hybrid system is
Subaru describes the architecture as a series-parallel hybrid. Depending on operating conditions, the engine, electric motors or both can provide drive power. That differs from a system that relies exclusively on an engine-generator arrangement or exclusively on an engine mechanically connected to the wheels.
The company’s technical description centers on a two-motor transaxle integrating the traction motor, a motor-generator, the front differential and an electronically controlled coupling. Subaru says the engine covers operating ranges in which the motor is less suited, while the motor supplies propulsion when conditions favor electric drive.
Subaru Corporation uses the name “Strong Hybrid” for Japan-market grades. Subaru of America presents the U.S. Forester as a next-generation series-parallel hybrid; the two descriptions refer to related system technology but different market naming.

Subaru’s current 2025 model page also advertises up to 40% better city fuel economy than conventional models. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently conducted test.
Does the hybrid still have Subaru AWD?
Yes. Subaru listed Symmetrical AWD as standard on the U.S. Forester Hybrid. The launch materials do not present the hybrid as a front-wheel-drive alternative.

For the Japan-market system, Subaru specifically describes mechanical coupling of the front and rear wheels through a propeller shaft. Its hybrid transaxle packages two high-output motors, the front differential and an electronically controlled coupling. These are Subaru’s engineering descriptions; they are not a substitute for an independent teardown or road test.
U.S. trims and equipment
The U.S. launch lineup comprised four trims:
- Premium
- Sport
- Limited
- Touring
Subaru announced standard EyeSight driver-assistance technology and Symmetrical AWD, with vehicles scheduled to reach retailers in spring 2025.

How the Japan-market Forester differs
Subaru Corporation announced the Japan-spec sixth-generation Forester on April 17, 2025. In Japan, the Strong Hybrid system is offered on the X-BREAK and Premium grades. A separate SPORT grade uses a 1.8-liter direct-injection turbo engine rather than the Strong Hybrid system.

The Japan technical release states that the traction motor produces up to 88 kW. Subaru does not provide a directly interchangeable U.S.-spec motor-output figure in the cited launch material, so the 88 kW number should not be converted into a U.S. Forester specification.

Do not confuse the Crosstrek range figure with the Forester
Subaru’s October 2024 technical release discussed a Japan-market Crosstrek application with a 63-liter fuel tank and a theoretical range of more than 1,000 km, calculated from WLTC consumption and tank capacity. Those figures belong to the Crosstrek system application, not the Forester, and should not be used as Forester specifications.
What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
- Horsepower: 194 hp is Subaru of America’s total system rating, not an independently measured dynamometer result.
- Fuel economy: 35 mpg combined is an EPA estimate supplied at launch; real-world consumption varies with speed, weather, load, tires and driving style.
- Range: 581 miles is Subaru’s “up to” figure and depends on the vehicle’s usable fuel capacity and operating conditions.
- Comparison shopping: Compare EPA figures with other U.S. vehicles, and WLTC figures only with other vehicles tested on WLTC. Do not combine the two test cycles in one ranking.
Bottom line for shoppers
The 2025 U.S. Forester Hybrid is Subaru’s first Forester described with this next-generation series-parallel arrangement: a Boxer engine and two-motor hybrid hardware that can share propulsion according to conditions, while retaining standard Symmetrical AWD. The headline specifications are 194 system horsepower and EPA-estimated 35 mpg combined. Japan’s “Strong Hybrid” grades use related hardware and a different lineup, so trim names, motor figures and range claims must be kept market-specific.
