The 2025 Porsche 911 Carrera S makes a compelling case for the middle rung of the 911 range: it delivers 473 hp, rear-wheel drive and substantial standard performance equipment, without adopting the Carrera GTS’s hybrid powertrain or the Carrera T’s enthusiast-first emphasis. Porsche quotes 0–60 mph in 3.1 seconds for a Sport Chrono-equipped Coupé; MotorTrend recorded 2.8 seconds in its separate instrumented test. Reviewers found it quick, composed and comfortable, though its price and fully digital instrument cluster may give some buyers pause.
What is the 2025 Carrera S?
The Carrera S is the rear-wheel-drive performance step above the base Carrera in the 2025 911 lineup. It is a 992.2-generation model offered as a Coupé or Cabriolet, with an eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. Porsche Cars North America says its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter flat-six produces 473 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque—30 hp more than the preceding Carrera S. Porsche attributes the engine changes to new turbochargers and revised charge-air cooling. Porsche Cars North America’s January 8, 2025 release provides the U.S. specifications.
How fast is it?
Porsche claims that a Coupé equipped with Sport Chrono reaches 60 mph in 3.1 seconds and has a 191-mph top track speed. Those are manufacturer figures, not independent test results. In a separate instrumented test, MotorTrend recorded 2.8 seconds to 60 mph and a 22.8-second figure-eight lap in its test vehicle. The differing acceleration times reflect distinct claims and test contexts; neither guarantees the result every driver will achieve.
What does the S add?
The S’s appeal is not just its power increase. Porsche’s U.S. equipment list includes a sport exhaust with silver tailpipes, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+), staggered 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, and larger brakes: 408 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear. Standard leather trim gives the cabin a more finished specification than the base model.

What is it like to drive?
MotorTrend’s first drive covered both Coupé and Cabriolet versions. Its reviewer found the Coupé quieter and more focused, while the Cabriolet trades some of that cabin calm for open-air driving. In default mode, the car remained comfortable in traffic rather than demanding a special occasion or an empty road.

There is no single best 911 for every buyer. The meaningful choice is whether the S’s mix of power and standard equipment matters more than price, transmission character or the GTS’s hybrid-assisted performance.

| Variant | What distinguishes it | Consider it if… |
|---|---|---|
| Carrera | Lower-priced entry point with less power and less included performance equipment than the S | You want 911 performance and everyday usability without paying for the S’s added output and kit |
| Carrera S | 473-hp rear-drive model with sport exhaust, PTV+, staggered wheels, larger brakes and standard leather trim | You want a substantial step up from the base Carrera while keeping the conventional non-hybrid powertrain |
| Carrera T | More enthusiast-oriented approach, with a focus on manual-transmission involvement | Driver involvement and the T’s distinct character matter more than the S’s additional standard equipment |
| Carrera GTS | Hybrid-assisted powertrain and a different performance character | You want the range’s added performance and are open to its changed powertrain |
Edmunds frames the S as a more powerful, better-equipped alternative to the base Carrera, while treating the T and GTS as credible choices for different priorities. For 2025 specifically, Road & Track reported that the S was not offered with a manual transmission at the time of its review; that is a model-year-specific statement and should not be assumed to describe later versions. Edmunds’ 911 comparison discusses the lineup’s differing appeal.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Brand new box.
- Real rubber tires.
- Detailed interior, exterior.
- Officially licensed product.
- Made of diecast with some plastic parts.
What are the tradeoffs?
- Price: Even the published 2025 starting prices are substantial, and the reviewed optioned cars climbed well beyond them.
- Digital instrumentation: MotorTrend criticized the fully digital instrument cluster for losing some of the traditional analog character associated with earlier 911s. Whether that is a drawback depends on how much you value the older presentation.
- Choosing the right flavor: The S is a strong all-rounder, but a lower-cost Carrera, manual-focused T or hybrid GTS may fit a buyer’s priorities better.
