The 2025 Polaris Slingshot is an evolution, not a reinvention. Revised engine tuning, suspension changes, a slightly higher front end, refreshed styling, and improved audio make it more polished. The core trade remains: dramatic open-air fun in exchange for wind, noise, limited weather protection, modest practicality, and a driving experience that demands more attention than an ordinary car.
The 2025 Polaris Slingshot is an evolution, not a reinvention. Its revised 2.0-liter engine, retuned suspension, slightly higher front end, refreshed styling, and improved audio make it more polished and easier to enjoy. But the fundamental bargain remains unchanged: you get a loud, open-air, rear-wheel-drive three-wheeler with dramatic styling and immediate responses in exchange for wind, noise, limited weather protection, modest practicality, and a driving experience that demands more attention than an ordinary car.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That makes the Slingshot easy to recommend to the right buyer and difficult to recommend to almost anyone else. Polaris officially classifies it as a three-wheel motorcycle, not a passenger car. It is best viewed as a recreational machine for sunny-day drives, attention, and mechanical theater—not as a replacement for a car or conventional motorcycle.

Polaris has updated several important parts of the Slingshot without changing its basic formula:
#1 Best Overall
- 2 Visors Included: Clear + Smoked and 1 Neck Scarf for Winter Use
- Streamlined Aerodynamic Design Reduces Wind Noise and Drag
- Advanced and Lightweight Durable ABS Shell
- Quick Release Clasp and Strap and Removable Inner Lining Pads
- Meets or Exceeds FMVSS-218 and DOT Safety Standards
- A refreshed front-end design gives the vehicle a sharper appearance.
- The 2.0-liter ProStar four-cylinder has been revised for stronger low- and mid-range torque.
- Suspension tuning has been revised to provide a more confidence-inspiring feel.
- The front end is approximately one inch higher, improving drivability and reducing some of the nervousness associated with the extremely low driving position.
- Larger 8-inch door speakers and upgraded Rockford Fosgate audio are available, depending on trim.
- Higher trims add equipment such as navigation, Apple CarPlay, paddle shifters on AutoDrive versions, and Brembo brakes.
The important qualification is that these changes do not fundamentally transform the Slingshot experience for someone familiar with a recent model. The 2025 version is more usable and more finished, but it is still unmistakably a Slingshot.
Engine and performance
The higher-output 2025 configuration uses a 1,997 cc ProStar 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing a manufacturer-claimed 204.1 horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 149.8 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. Polaris lists an 8,500-rpm rev limit, a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 4.9 seconds, a 125-mph electronically limited top speed, and 1.02 g of peak lateral grip.
Those acceleration, grip, and top-speed figures are manufacturer claims, not independent instrumented results. They should be treated as reference specifications rather than performance numbers verified in this review. The same official data calls for 91-octane-or-higher fuel and lists a 9.77-gallon tank.
Peak horsepower is not the most important change from behind the wheel. Independent road testing found the revised engine’s stronger low- and mid-range torque more useful in normal driving. The extra flexibility means the driver does not need to keep the engine at high rpm or shift constantly to make progress. That matters in a vehicle whose open cockpit already makes ordinary speeds feel more dramatic than they do in a sealed car.
The engine remains a willing, high-revving part of the experience, but the 2025 calibration makes it less demanding on public roads. It is easier to pull away, pass, and drive through winding sections without treating every gear change as a project.
Comfort and Slingshot driving modes
The Slingshot offers Comfort and Slingshot modes. These modes alter throttle response and steering assistance; they do not turn the suspension into two completely different setups.
| Mode | What changes | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Comfort | More steering assistance and softer response | Urban driving, parking, low-speed maneuvering, and relaxed cruising |
| Slingshot | Sharper throttle response and less steering assistance | Winding roads and drivers who want more immediate inputs |
Comfort mode gives the Slingshot a more relaxed personality. Steering effort is lighter and the throttle is easier to meter, which is helpful in traffic or when maneuvering around tight spaces. Slingshot mode makes small steering and throttle inputs more consequential. The steering feels more direct, but the vehicle also becomes twitchier and requires a firmer, more deliberate grip.
That two-personality character is one of the vehicle’s better features. It can serve as an open-air cruiser during a casual drive and then become a sharper, more demanding toy on a winding road. The modes do not make it a luxury vehicle in Comfort or a track car in Slingshot mode; they simply change how much assistance and immediacy the driver receives.
Handling: entertaining, but traction-sensitive
The Slingshot’s three-wheel layout defines its road manners. Two wheels steer at the front, while one driven tire handles propulsion at the rear. That single rear contact patch can become the limiting factor when the driver applies power aggressively, accelerates on a compromised surface, or enters a low-grip corner.

Independent testing found the rear tire capable of becoming loose when the vehicle is pushed. That can be entertaining when deliberately explored in an appropriate, controlled environment, but it is not an advantage when the goal is maximum straight-line traction or predictable behavior on sand, dust, standing water, or other compromised surfaces.
The fair description is neither that the Slingshot is universally grippy nor that it is inherently unsafe. It is a vehicle with immediate responses and a relatively narrow margin for careless inputs compared with a normal sedan. Smooth throttle application, proper speed selection, good tires, and attention to road conditions matter more here than they do in an ordinary commuter car.

Braking performance
The 2025 R adds Brembo four-piston front brakes, and independent testing found the upgraded system delivered strong stopping performance. Polaris confirms the Brembo package as part of the R’s equipment.
That hardware is one reason to consider the R if the vehicle will be driven enthusiastically. It is not, by itself, a reason every buyer should skip the SLR or another configuration. The right choice depends on how much the driver values braking hardware, premium equipment, manual involvement, and appearance.
Open-air comfort: the main appeal and the main compromise
The Slingshot’s open cockpit is not a minor styling detail. It is the reason to buy one—and the reason it cannot replace a conventional car.

Occupants are exposed to wind, insects, road debris, and changing temperatures in a way they are not inside a car. Helmets can make conversation difficult, especially with a passenger. A helmet communication system can help, but no intercom eliminates the basic fact that the occupants are sitting in an exposed cockpit.
The seats are comfortable enough for cruising, and the interior is relatively easy to clean. At highway speeds, however, wind and engine noise become dominant. The upgraded audio system can sound impressive around town, but wind noise reduces its clarity and usefulness as speed rises. A larger speaker does not turn an open three-wheeler into a quiet touring vehicle.
Weather protection depends on the particular windscreen, clothing, speed, and conditions. The Slingshot may be durable enough to serve as a recreational machine in changing weather, but it should not be described as all-weather transportation equivalent to a closed car. Buyers should plan around the forecast rather than assume the cockpit will provide meaningful shelter.

What to bring on a first ride
- A full-face motorcycle helmet is a sensible choice for an open cockpit exposed to insects and road debris. Helmet requirements vary by jurisdiction, so check the law where the vehicle will be operated and follow Polaris’s safety guidance.
- Eye protection, gloves, long sleeves, and other protective riding gear can make the experience more comfortable and reduce exposure.
- A helmet intercom or motorcycle communication system is worth considering if two people need to talk while wearing helmets.
- Layers and weather-appropriate clothing matter more than they would in a car.
These are general equipment recommendations, not endorsements of a specific product. Fit, certification, compatibility, and local legal requirements should be verified before purchase.
Storage and everyday practicality
The Slingshot has more storage than its theatrical shape suggests. There are compartments behind both seats and a glove compartment. Reported first-ride experience found that the rear compartments could accommodate most full-face helmets, although helmet shape and size matter. The glove compartment is unusually generous for this type of vehicle.
That is useful storage, not car-like practicality. You may have room for a helmet or a limited amount of groceries, but the Slingshot lacks the enclosed cargo area, weather protection, passenger isolation, and flexible loading space expected from an everyday vehicle.
For that reason, storage should be viewed as a pleasant surprise rather than a justification for using the Slingshot as a primary commuter. It can carry the essentials for a drive, but it is still specialized recreation.
2025 Slingshot trims and equipment
Polaris offers the 2025 Slingshot in multiple trims and with manual or AutoDrive transmission configurations. There is no universally best version; the best choice depends on whether the buyer prioritizes involvement, convenience, braking hardware, styling, or equipment.

| Manual versions | Greater direct involvement and control over gear selection | Enthusiasts for whom the mechanical interaction is central to the purchase |
The SLR is the performance-and-style middle ground, while the R adds the most premium technology and hardware. A manual SLR or R will likely appeal to someone seeking maximum involvement. AutoDrive makes the vehicle easier to use in traffic and still offers paddle-shift control on the R. Local pricing and equipment availability should be confirmed with Polaris or a dealer because configurations and market details can vary.
Polaris also documents a broad range of Polaris Slingshot accessories, including windscreens, audio equipment, navigation, lighting, storage options, wheels, and other personalization parts. These can improve the vehicle’s fit for a particular owner, but they do not erase its basic exposure or limited practicality. Verify exact 2025 compatibility before ordering.

Polaris’s owner documentation states that the Slingshot is not a car. It complies with motorcycle-related U.S. Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requirements rather than passenger-car requirements. The manual also emphasizes that operation carries inherent risks and directs owners to follow inspection, protective-apparel, and safe-driving guidance.
Do not assume that one nationwide helmet or licensing rule applies. Requirements can vary by state and may change. Before buying or riding, check the rules in the jurisdiction where the Slingshot will be registered and operated. Also check whether your insurance company treats it as a motorcycle, an autocycle, or another specialized vehicle category.

The practical safety lesson is straightforward: use protective equipment, inspect the vehicle and tires, respect the single rear tire’s traction limits, and avoid treating the Slingshot’s playful responses as an invitation to slide it on public roads. Its open cockpit leaves occupants more exposed than people in a car, and its steering and throttle can be more immediate than a casual driver expects.
Who should buy the 2025 Polaris Slingshot?
The Slingshot makes sense for a buyer who:
- wants an unusual open-air driving experience rather than efficient transportation;
- has access to another vehicle for bad weather, errands, and long-distance practicality;
- enjoys attention and does not mind a conspicuous, noisy vehicle;
- is comfortable with motorcycle-style exposure and local protective-equipment requirements;
- values steering, throttle, and transmission involvement more than refinement;
- can accept that road conditions and smooth inputs matter greatly at the rear tire.
It is a poor fit for someone shopping for a quiet commuter, secure luggage space, dependable weather protection, easy passenger conversation, or one vehicle that does everything. The Slingshot is not a failed car and not a conventional motorcycle with two extra wheels. It is its own category of recreational machine.
2025 Polaris Slingshot first-ride verdict
The 2025 Polaris Slingshot is the most rounded version of the current formula documented in this review. The revised engine is more flexible, the suspension and front-end changes improve confidence, the styling is fresher, and the available audio and technology make the package feel more finished.
None of that changes the central trade-off. The single rear tire can run out of traction, highway noise is substantial, weather protection is limited, and the driver must pay closer attention than in an ordinary car. Those are not isolated flaws that Polaris failed to correct; they are the price of the Slingshot’s exposed, theatrical personality.

Buy the 2025 Slingshot for the experience itself. If the goal is a sunny-day cruiser that attracts attention and makes ordinary roads feel like an event, the latest model is easier to live with and more polished than before. If the goal is rational transportation, look elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2025 Polaris Slingshot a car or a motorcycle?
No. Polaris identifies the Slingshot as a three-wheel motorcycle rather than a passenger car. It is designed as an open-air recreational vehicle, not as an all-purpose replacement for a car or conventional motorcycle.
How much horsepower does the 2025 Polaris Slingshot have?
The higher-output 2025 configuration uses a 2.0-liter ProStar four-cylinder with a manufacturer-claimed 204.1 horsepower and 149.8 lb-ft of torque. Polaris claims a 4.9-second 0-to-60-mph time, but that figure is not an independent instrumented result.
What is the difference between the 2025 Slingshot SLR and R?
The R is the top trim and adds equipment including a premium fascia, vented sport hood, RIDE COMMAND navigation, Apple CarPlay, forged roll hoops, and Brembo brakes. The SLR is a performance-and-style middle ground with upgraded audio, a larger rear tire, sport interior treatment, and a tinted windscreen.
