The redesigned 2025 Nissan Kicks is a more useful small crossover than its predecessor: it adds available all-wheel drive (AWD), gains passenger and cargo room, and gets a more modern cabin. Its 141-hp engine is adequate for routine driving, not quick acceleration. Front-wheel drive (FWD) delivers more cargo capacity and slightly better EPA fuel economy; AWD adds traction features but gives up some cargo room and efficiency.
Is the 2025 Nissan Kicks a big improvement?
Yes, in practical ways. The second-generation Kicks expands the formula with optional AWD for the first time, more rear-seat room, a more contemporary interior, and a larger available screen setup. Nissan’s 2024 U.S. press kit says rear knee room increased 0.9 inch and rear shoulder room 1.5 inches compared with the 2024 model. It also lists 8.4 inches of ground clearance. For context, the Kicks competes with small crossovers such as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, and Volkswagen Taos. A sensible comparison should look beyond the starting price: check the equipment on the specific grade, whether AWD is available, passenger and cargo space, ride comfort, fuel economy, and acceleration. How does the Kicks drive?
Engine and everyday acceleration
Every 2025 Kicks grade uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 141 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque, paired with Nissan’s Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT). FWD is standard, and AWD is optional. Those figures are a step up from the previous Kicks, but the driving impressions suggest modest performance rather than brisk acceleration. Nissan’s press kit.

First-drive reviewers found the powertrain serviceable for ordinary commuting but strained when asked for more. Edmunds reported tepid acceleration and difficulty on hills. J.D. Power’s Perry Stern noted slow throttle response, disappointing acceleration, and a loud engine under hard acceleration. MotorTrend’s Justin Banner also wanted more power on steep grades. FWD and AWD have different rear suspensions
MotorTrend describes the FWD Kicks as having a twist-beam rear axle and the AWD version as using a multilink rear suspension. Banner found the AWD model’s driving dynamics more appealing on the test drive. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that AWD will feel better to every driver; many buyers may care more about its traction capability, the added cost, or the FWD model’s greater cargo capacity. Is AWD worth it on the 2025 Kicks?
Choose AWD if the additional traction and Snow mode matter for the roads and conditions you regularly encounter. Nissan says the Snow mode adjusts AWD and vehicle-dynamics control for slippery surfaces. AWD is available on S, SV, and SR grades; it is not standard on any of them. FWD is the stronger fit if your priorities are lower launch cost, maximum cargo capacity, or the slightly better EPA fuel-economy estimate. The published estimates are 31 mpg combined for FWD and 30 mpg combined for AWD. Those are EPA estimates reported by Edmunds and J.D. Power in 2024, not a promise of what an individual driver will achieve. J.D. How much cargo space does the 2025 Nissan Kicks have?
FWD models offer up to 30 cubic feet behind the second row and 60 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, according to 2024 figures reported by Edmunds and J.D. Power. J.D. Power reports 23.9 cubic feet behind the second row for AWD. Nissan describes a two-level flexible luggage board on SV and SR grades. If you often carry bulky items with the rear seats in use, FWD’s larger published cargo volume is a meaningful advantage; AWD trades some of that space for its additional traction capability. Is the cabin comfortable and practical?
Nissan’s stated rear-seat room increases give the redesigned Kicks a more accommodating second row on paper. Edmunds found both rows adequate, while J.D. Power described the Zero Gravity seats as supportive and comfortable during its drive. The front storage area was a weak point in Edmunds’ assessment, so buyers who rely on convenient small-item storage should check the layout in person. Nissan and J.D. What technology and safety features are available?
Equipment depends on grade and package. J.D. Power reports a 7-inch base touchscreen and available dual 12.3-inch displays; Nissan’s press kit lists an available 12.3-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. J.D. Power lists standard driver aids including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic warning, rear automatic braking, and blind-spot warning, with higher-grade or package-dependent features such as a 360-degree camera and ProPILOT Assist also available. Verify the equipment on the exact vehicle and trim being considered. ProPILOT Assist is a driver-assistance system, not autonomous driving: Nissan says it cannot prevent collisions, requires the driver to remain in control, operates only when lane markings are detected, and may require the driver to steer, brake, or accelerate. What did the 2025 Nissan Kicks cost at launch?
Nissan’s 2024 launch MSRP table listed these U.S. prices before options and destination. They are historical launch figures, not current dealer prices. Edmunds separately reported a destination-inclusive 2025 base price of $23,220 and a starting price of $29,070 for SR AWD. Because those sources present different pricing bases, compare a current local quote—including destination, options, and any applicable incentives—rather than treating launch MSRP as today’s transaction price. Who should consider the 2025 Kicks?
- Consider FWD if cargo volume, the slightly higher EPA combined estimate, and a lower launch price matter more than AWD traction.
- Consider AWD if added traction and Snow mode suit the conditions you face, and you accept the lower published cargo volume and fuel-economy estimate.
- Test-drive it on your usual kinds of roads if hills, highway merging, or quick passing are routine. Reviewers found acceleration underwhelming when the engine was pushed.
- Check the exact trim and package for screen size, wireless phone integration, and advanced driver assistance features.
- Get a current local quote before deciding whether the Kicks represents good value; launch MSRP does not establish current pricing or incentives.
For an SR AWD, J.D. Power’s test-vehicle equipment list included floor mats. If shopping for mats separately, confirm that a specific listing fits the 2025 model year and the vehicle’s drivetrain; the test-vehicle detail does not establish a particular brand or product recommendation.
