The Coyote makes a strong case for being one of America’s great mass-market naturally aspirated V8s: it is a 5.0-liter, four-valve-per-cylinder engine that remains naturally aspirated in the 2024 Mustang. But calling it the country’s “last” such engine is a broader claim than the available specifications establish. Here is what the Coyote is, how its Mustang generations differ, and what Ford’s current Gen 4 crate-engine figures actually mean.
What is a Coyote engine?
Coyote is Ford’s internal code name for the 5.0-liter V8 introduced in the 2011 model-year Mustang story, according to Ford’s engine history. It uses four valves per cylinder and dual overhead camshafts (DOHC), a layout that supports high-rpm breathing while retaining the displacement and cylinder count associated with a traditional American V8.
In the 2024 Mustang, Ford identifies the 5.0L as naturally aspirated, front-mounted and longitudinal, with 12:1 compression and a 7,500-rpm maximum engine speed. Those are specifications for that documented Mustang application, not figures that automatically apply to every Coyote-powered car or truck. See the 2024 Mustang Owner’s Manual.
Why does the Coyote have a claim to greatness?
The case rests on a combination of scale, character and continued relevance: the Coyote is a modern, high-revving 5.0-liter V8 in the Mustang, and Ford Performance still lists a Gen 4 Mustang version as a crate engine. Its 12:1 compression and 7,500-rpm maximum engine speed in the 2024 Mustang show an engine designed to operate well beyond the low-rpm range often associated with older pushrod V8s.

That is an argument for the Coyote’s significance, not proof that no other American mass-market naturally aspirated V8 remains. “Last” depends on how mass-market, American and engine availability are defined. The official specifications cited here document the Coyote; they do not establish a complete, current competitor comparison. Treat “America’s last truly great” as a defensible editorial thesis, not a settled market-wide fact.
How did the Mustang Coyote generations change?
Ford Performance’s 2011–2019 technical reference groups Mustang Coyotes into three generations. Those labels describe the Mustang range in that reference; they are not a complete generation timeline for every vehicle that has used a Coyote, and specifications can differ between Mustang and F-150 applications.

- EXPOSED DOHC V8 ARCHITECTURE: This model presents a V8 layout with two angled cylinder banks, four exposed overhead camshafts, dual timing-chain drives, a central intake section, and outward-facing exhaust headers. The open arrangement makes the major mechanical structures easy to identify before and during operation.
- PRECISION METAL CONSTRUCTION: Built from precision-cast and machined components in anodized aluminum and stainless steel. Defined surfaces, exposed fasteners, timing assemblies, and front pulleys reflect key structures found in modern V8 engine architecture while giving the completed model a detailed industrial finish.
- 500+ COMPONENT ASSEMBLY: Build the model from more than 500 labeled components, including precision metal parts, screws, and assembly hardware. Custom foam trays help organize and protect the parts, while the included tool set and full-color manual guide the approximately five-hour assembly process.
- MOTORIZED FOUR-STROKE MOTION: An electric motor concealed inside the starter housing drives the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, and valvetrain through a four-stroke mechanical sequence. Viewing openings reveal the internal movement, while the exposed camshafts, timing chains, and belt-driven pulleys show how motion is transferred across the assembled engine.
- MECHANICAL DISPLAY FOR HOME OR OFFICE: Measuring approximately 7.80 × 6.69 × 7.09 inches when assembled, the DM118 combines visible mechanical motion with detailed metal construction. Intended for ages 14 and above, it is suited to model builders, automotive enthusiasts, engineering fans, and hobbyists for display in a home, office, study, studio, or workshop. A metal gift box is included.
| Mustang generation | Model years in Ford Performance’s reference | Documented change |
|---|---|---|
| Gen 1 | 2011–2014 | Original Mustang-era generation grouping. |
| Gen 2 | 2015–2017 | Ford identifies 2015 as the first major design change since introduction, focused on breathing and informed by Boss 302 development. |
| Gen 3 | 2018–2019 | Redesign added high-pressure direct injection alongside low-pressure port injection. |
Ford Performance describes the 2018 redesign this way: “In 2018 the 5.0L Coyote engine was thoroughly reworked, featuring dual-fuel, high pressure direct injection combined with low-pressure port fuel injection technology for increased power and efficiency.” The statement refers to the 2018–2019 scope of its 2011–2019 Coyote Technical Reference; it should not be read as a specification for every later Coyote application.
Is the Mustang Coyote naturally aspirated?
Yes: the 2024 Mustang Owner’s Manual identifies its 5.0L engine as naturally aspirated. Ford Performance’s Gen 4 Mustang crate-engine listing also describes a 5.0L engine with direct and port fuel injection and does not list forced induction for that product. That answer is specific to these documented configurations; Ford has also announced a separate supercharged Coyote crate-engine project, so “Coyote” alone does not guarantee naturally aspirated induction.

How much horsepower does a Gen 4 Coyote make?
Ford Performance lists its Gen 4 Mustang Coyote crate engine, SKU M-6007-M50D, at 480 horsepower at 7,150 rpm and 415 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm, on premium fuel. These are the crate engine’s published specifications, not a universal output rating for every 5.0L Coyote or a claim about a particular production Mustang. The listing describes a 5.0L, 32-valve DOHC V8 with direct and port fuel injection, Ti-VCT, dual throttle bodies, 12:1 compression, a plasma-transferred-wire-arc-spray aluminum block and cross-bolted main bearing caps. See the Ford Performance Gen 4 crate-engine listing.
What about the announced supercharged crate engine?
In January 2025, Ford announced another Coyote crate-engine project with expected dealer and Ford Performance Parts availability in the fourth quarter of 2025. That was a forecast, not confirmation that the engine is currently on sale. Its status should be checked against a current Ford Performance listing before treating it as available; Ford’s announcement establishes the dated expectation, not present inventory.

Is the Coyote really America’s last mass-market naturally aspirated V8?
The evidence here does not establish that. It confirms a naturally aspirated 5.0L Mustang for the 2024 model year and a listed Gen 4 Mustang crate engine, but it does not inventory every current American-market vehicle or define the threshold for “mass-market.” A rigorous “last” claim would need comparisons across other naturally aspirated V8s, including their model-year availability, vehicle class, production-vehicle output and pricing—not just crate-engine specifications.
The more supportable conclusion is narrower: the Coyote remains a prominent, high-revving naturally aspirated V8 in the Mustang, while Ford continues to offer a Gen 4 Mustang version as a crate engine. Whether it is the last great mass-market example is a matter of judgment that requires a broader competitor set than these documented facts provide.
