For the 2025 model year, the Toyota Camry is the stronger choice when reliability-study results, crash-test recognition and fuel efficiency are your priorities. Model-year matching matters because a used 2024 or older Camry may have a different powertrain strategy, while an older Altima may have the turbocharged option that is absent from the 2025 range. Compare the model year printed on the vehicle and the window sticker, not merely the registration date.
Reliability: what the available evidence actually shows
JD Power study rankings favor the Camry
JD Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study ranked the Camry first among midsize cars and the Altima second. That study measures owner-reported problems during the third year of ownership. JD Power also reports the same first-place Camry and second-place Altima order in its 2024 U.S. Initial Quality Study, which covers the first 90 days of ownership.
These are different snapshots: initial quality captures early ownership complaints, while dependability reflects problems reported after vehicles have been in service for about three years. The matching order is encouraging for the Camry, but it still describes averages across surveyed owners rather than a predicted failure date, repair bill or lifespan for your car.

These results support a modest reliability advantage for the Camry in the cited studies. They do not mean every Camry will outlast every Altima. A neglected Camry can be a poor purchase, while a well-maintained Altima with complete records may be dependable. Survey information has limits
Consumer Reports bases its reliability information on subscriber surveys about trouble spots. Its 2025 Camry page notes owner-reported in-car electronics issues. The 2025 Altima page provides an overall reliability estimate, but the accessible information does not provide a directly comparable numerical score for both cars. You should not convert those qualitative descriptions into a precise failure rate or expected repair bill.
For a used purchase, condition can matter more than the badge. Review oil-change intervals, CVT service documentation where applicable, tire and brake replacement history, dashboard warning lights and evidence of water intrusion. A pre-purchase inspection can reveal deferred work that a model-level ranking cannot.
Recall counts are not a substitute for a VIN check
At the time represented in the Consumer Reports search results, its pages listed two NHTSA recalls for the 2025 Altima and one for the 2025 Camry. Recall totals can change as campaigns are announced, and a model-level count does not tell you whether a particular vehicle is affected or whether the repair has been completed.
A recall is a safety or compliance campaign, not a reliability score. An unrepaired recall can affect whether you can register or insure a vehicle in some circumstances, and completion normally requires documentation from an authorized dealer. Before buying either sedan:
- Obtain the vehicle’s 17-character VIN.
- Enter it in the NHTSA VIN-specific recall lookup.
- Ask the seller for repair orders showing that recall work was completed.
- Have an independent technician inspect the car, especially if it is used or has been in an accident.
Safety: ratings and awards measure different things
Overall NHTSA rating
JD Power reports a five-star overall NHTSA rating for both 2025 sedans. An overall star rating combines results from separate frontal, side and rollover evaluations into a federal program summary. It is useful, but it is not the same test framework used by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Do not treat the five stars as proof that every trim has identical lighting, driver-assistance calibration or crash-avoidance hardware. Confirm the equipment on the exact vehicle, particularly when comparing a base car with one carrying an optional safety package.
IIHS distinction goes to the Camry

Altima: conventional gasoline and CVT
The 2025 Altima uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and CVT. Consumer Reports recorded 31 mpg overall in its 2025 road test and said the engine improved acceleration and fuel economy compared with the prior configuration. That 31-mpg result is not an EPA label and was not collected under the same protocol as the Camry’s 47-mpg EPA figure.
The conventional setup may appeal to shoppers who do not want a hybrid system or who already have a trusted Nissan service relationship. It does not, however, make the Altima automatically cheaper to run: fuel prices, annual mileage, insurance and repair history determine the actual budget.

Use your expected annual miles and local fuel price instead of treating either published number as a promise. A simple estimate is:

For a more realistic estimate, use the EPA value for the exact Camry trim and a conservative Altima assumption based on your route mix, then update the calculation after you have real fuel receipts. Include the effect of all-wheel drive, winter temperatures, roof loads, idling and aggressive acceleration. The available sources do not establish one universal annual fuel-cost difference for every driver.
Warranty and complimentary maintenance

For a used car, calculate what remains from the original in-service date and odometer, not the date you purchase it. Ask whether scheduled services were completed on time and whether any maintenance plan is transferable. Hybrid-system coverage can have separate terms; consult the exact warranty documentation for the Camry you are buying.
Complimentary maintenance is limited in duration and mileage, so it should not be confused with prepaid coverage for tires, brakes, unexpected repairs or all routine service. Confirm which intervals and services are included and where work must be performed.

Ownership costs: why there is no proven 2025 winner
What must be included
Total ownership cost is more than the advertised purchase price. Build your estimate from:
- Negotiated purchase price, taxes, registration and dealer or lender fees.
- Financing interest and the amount of cash tied up in the car.
- Fuel based on your annual mileage and local prices.
- Insurance quotes for your address, driver profile, coverage limits and chosen deductible.
- Scheduled maintenance, tires, brakes and other wear items.
- Unscheduled repairs after warranty coverage ends.
- Depreciation, or the difference between purchase price and eventual sale or trade value.
Separate one-time acquisition costs from recurring costs so a low advertised price does not hide a high interest charge or insurance premium. For a used example, add an immediate-service allowance for tires, fluids or brakes if inspection results suggest they are near replacement.
Edmunds’ 2026 model estimate is not a 2025 forecast
Edmunds’ available comparison for the 2026 model year modeled five-year ownership costs of $42,212 for the Altima and $34,785 for the Camry. Its estimate includes depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, fuel, insurance, maintenance and repairs. Those figures reflect Edmunds’ assumptions for a 2026 comparison; they are not actual bills, do not establish 2025 costs and cannot predict what a particular owner will spend.
Use such a model only as a framework. Replace its mileage, fuel price, insurance, financing rate and resale assumptions with your own numbers. A heavily discounted Altima, an unusually expensive Camry insurance quote or a high-mileage driving pattern could change the result. Conversely, a well-priced used Camry with a poor service history may be a worse financial decision than a documented Altima.

Step 1: Match the specification
Write down model year, trim, front- or all-wheel drive, mileage and optional packages for both vehicles. A hybrid Camry and a gasoline Altima do not have the same fuel-use profile, and equipment differences can alter insurance and resale value.

Choose the Camry if its hybrid efficiency and stronger IIHS recognition matter most and the price and history are acceptable. Choose the Altima when a conventional gasoline powertrain, a specific deal or a well-documented example better fits your needs. Do not let a segment ranking override a poor inspection report.
