The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G-Class keeps its unmistakable shape but adds a substantial technology and powertrain refresh. In the U.S., the key choices are the G 550, with a new mild-hybrid inline-six, and the AMG G 63, which pairs its handcrafted V8 with 48-volt electrification. The all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology is a separate model; its range figures cited here use Europe’s WLTP test cycle, not U.S. EPA estimates.
What changed on the 2025 G-Class?
The update focuses on technology, powertrains, and detail changes rather than a redesign. Mercedes-Benz USA describes the exterior revisions as subtle: the grille has four horizontal louvers instead of three, and the front and rear bumpers are revised. New A-pillar trim and a spoiler lip at the roof edge are intended to improve aerodynamics. Mercedes also says new insulation materials improve noise levels. The familiar G-Class silhouette remains. Inside, the refresh brings MBUX infotainment to the U.S. G-Class. The G 550 guide lists a 12.3-inch driver display and a 12.3-inch center touchscreen, along with voice control, navigation, and augmented-reality navigation. Driver-assistance features are also updated; equipment and comfort-feature availability can vary by configuration.
How do the U.S. G 550 and AMG G 63 differ?
Both U.S. versions use 48-volt mild-hybrid systems, but they retain distinct engines and characters. The G 550 changes to a turbocharged inline-six; the AMG G 63 keeps a V8 and adds an integrated starter generator. The figures below are Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2024 guide figures for the 2025 G 550 and its 2024 overview figures for the G 63, not independent test results.

The G 550’s price, output, fuel economy, and estimated acceleration come from the Mercedes-Benz USA quick reference guide. The guide says the 2025 G 550 is 0.3 seconds quicker from 0 to 60 mph than its predecessor and has a 30 percent increase in EPA city fuel economy. Those are manufacturer-published comparisons, not independent measurements. The G 63 engine and output figures are from Mercedes-Benz USA’s 2024 overview.
Optional AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL uses active hydraulic roll stabilization on the G 63. It is an AMG-specific equipment option, not a defining feature of every G-Class.

What off-road equipment does the G-Class retain?
The refresh leaves the G-Class’s core off-road hardware intact. Mercedes-Benz’s U.S. overview identifies ladder-frame construction, three mechanical differential locks, selectable LOW RANGE, a solid rear axle, and independent front suspension. The G 550 guide additionally lists 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a 40:60 front-to-rear torque distribution.
For buyers considering a more trail-oriented G 550 setup, the optional G PROFESSIONAL package includes 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, a PROFESSIONAL roof rack and spare-wheel holder, and a luggage floor. The standard G 550 wheel size is 19 inches, according to the U.S. guide. Package availability and vehicle equipment should be checked for the specific configuration.

Where does the electric G 580 fit?
The G 580 with EQ Technology is an all-electric G-Class, not another name for the mild-hybrid G 550 or AMG G 63. Mercedes-Benz’s European-market overview describes four individually controlled motors, a 116 kWh battery integrated into the ladder frame, peak output of 432 kW, and peak torque of 1,164 Nm. The company quotes up to 473 km of range under the WLTP cycle. That is a European test-cycle figure, not a U.S. EPA range estimate. See the Mercedes-Benz G 580 overview.
The European technical sheet lists 11 kW maximum AC charging, 200 kW maximum DC charging, and a 32-minute DC charging time. It also reports 620 liters of cargo volume, expanding to 1,990 liters. These are figures for the cited European G 580 specification; they should not be assumed for U.S. versions or other G-Class models. The sheet lists 265/60R18 tires for that specification. Tire size and wheel fitment vary, so use the vehicle’s tire placard and verify fitment before buying replacements. The figures are in Mercedes-Benz’s G 580 technical data sheet.

The electric model retains the ladder-frame approach, with a protective battery enclosure and underbody protection described by Mercedes-Benz. Its four motors and electric powertrain distinguish it technically from the two U.S. mild-hybrid choices.
Which 2025 G-Class figures apply to which version?
Most frequently quoted numbers belong to a particular market and model. The G 550 price and EPA figures above are U.S. guide values for that version; the G 63 output figures describe the AMG V8; the G 580 range and charging data come from European materials. They are not interchangeable. Mercedes-Benz also announced that the 600,000th G-Class produced rolled off the Graz line on August 5, 2025; it was a G 580 with EQ Technology.
