The 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid fills a clear gap in the lineup: it pairs the crossover’s outdoor-oriented utility with a Toyota-based hybrid system and Mazda’s EPA-estimated 38 mpg combined. The key trade-off is that the efficiency comes with an eCVT and a distinct hybrid all-wheel-drive system, so the numbers alone do not tell you whether it is the right CX-50. Here is what Mazda’s specifications and available first-drive coverage establish—and what they do not.
What is new about the 2025 CX-50 Hybrid?
The hybrid brings Toyota Hybrid System hardware to the CX-50. Mazda describes a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, a hybrid battery, three electric motors, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (eCVT), and standard electric all-wheel drive (eAWD). Mazda says the system produces 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque and runs on regular 87-octane fuel. Mazda USA’s 2024 announcement has the full powertrain description.
This is not the same AWD system Mazda uses in the gasoline CX-50: the Hybrid’s eAWD distributes torque between the axles through its electric-drive system, while the gasoline models use Mazda i-Activ AWD. That distinction matters when comparing drivetrains, though the available material does not establish a like-for-like traction test.
Does the CX-50 Hybrid get better gas mileage than the regular CX-50?
Yes, based on Mazda’s published EPA-estimated figures. Mazda lists the Hybrid at 38 mpg combined and describes that as about 40% better than the CX-50 2.5 S. The percentage is Mazda’s comparison, not an independent, controlled test of the two vehicles. Mazda’s announcement also estimates approximately $575 in annual fuel savings versus the 2.5 S; that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed result for an individual owner.

Your actual fuel use will depend on driving conditions and habits. The cited figures establish the official EPA estimate and Mazda’s comparison, but not a real-world economy result or a controlled head-to-head ranking against other hybrid crossovers.
Does Toyota’s hybrid system change how the Mazda drives?
It changes the mechanical character of the powertrain: the CX-50 Hybrid uses an eCVT rather than a conventional stepped automatic transmission. Mazda says its engineers calibrated accelerator response and provides Power and Trail drive modes. Those are the manufacturer’s stated tuning goals and features, not proof of a measured driving outcome.

These reviews support treating the CX-50 Hybrid as Toyota hybrid hardware integrated into a Mazda product, but the evidence here does not support a shared verdict about handling, cabin noise, or powertrain response, nor a definitive ranking against the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or Honda CR-V Hybrid.
How much can the CX-50 Hybrid tow?
Mazda rates the 2025 CX-50 Hybrid to tow up to 1,500 pounds when equipped with Mazda genuine towing accessories. The rating is conditional: Mazda’s published statement does not specify which accessories or setup satisfy it. Consult the owner’s manual and Mazda dealer guidance for the vehicle and equipment in question before towing; do not assume the maximum applies to an unequipped vehicle.

What did the 2025 CX-50 Hybrid cost?
Mazda USA listed a $33,970 starting price for the 2025 Hybrid in its model-year pricing material. This is a model-year reference, not a current transaction price or an offer; trim, destination charges, inventory, and incentives can change the amount a buyer pays. The Hybrid is worth considering if you want a CX-50 with substantially better official fuel economy than Mazda’s 2.5 S comparison and standard electric AWD. Before choosing it, compare the specific trims and current prices, and consider whether the eCVT’s response suits your driving preferences. For a purchase decision, also compare real-world fuel economy from equivalent routes and conditions, passenger and cargo needs, AWD use, and any towing requirements; the available figures do not provide a complete comparison across those factors.
