The 2019 BMW X7 made a strong case as BMW’s first full-size, three-row luxury SUV: it combined a comfortable, well-finished cabin with a third row that a contemporary reviewer found usable for adults. The xDrive40i offered the more efficient entry point; the xDrive50i delivered substantially more power, at a much higher original price. Whether it was the “best” big SUV depended on how a buyer weighed space, performance, fuel economy and cost.
Is the 2019 BMW X7 a good SUV?
For shoppers seeking a large luxury SUV with three usable rows, the 2019 X7 had a persuasive mix of passenger room, comfort and technology. After driving both launch trims, Cars.com reviewer Brian Wong wrote on June 4, 2019, “The X7 is a true luxury vehicle that ticks all the boxes of what a big SUV should be, with plenty of space, technology and style.” That is a period road-test verdict, not an objective ranking across every large SUV.
The main trade-off was cost. The original starting prices were high, and the specific vehicles in Cars.com’s review cost considerably more once equipped with options. The xDrive40i also prioritized efficiency over effortless acceleration, while the V8 xDrive50i was quicker but used more fuel and cost more.
2019 BMW X7 xDrive40i vs. xDrive50i
Both launch trims paired xDrive all-wheel drive with an eight-speed Steptronic automatic. Their engines, performance, fuel estimates and original U.S. prices differed:

xDrive40i: the efficiency-minded choice
The six-cylinder xDrive40i was the less expensive and more fuel-efficient trim by the figures Cars.com cited. The reviewer found it competent and comfortable, though the engine had to work harder to move the large SUV. Its 5.8-second 0–60 mph time is BMW’s claim, not an independent acceleration test.

xDrive50i: more power, more expense
The V8 xDrive50i had 121 more horsepower than the xDrive40i and a BMW-claimed 0–60 mph time 0.6 seconds quicker. Cars.com’s reviewer noticed stronger acceleration and easier passing. That added performance came with the higher original price and lower cited EPA estimates.
How much did optioned X7s cost?
Cars.com’s tested xDrive40i was priced at $100,995, and its tested xDrive50i at $117,645. The xDrive40i test vehicle carried about $25,000 in options. These are the historical prices of those particular review vehicles, not current asking prices or a guide to today’s used market. They illustrate how equipment could push the X7 well above its launch starting price.

Is the BMW X7’s third row big enough for adults?
BMW launched the X7 with standard seating for seven and offered second-row captain’s chairs as an option, reducing capacity to six. Cars.com’s reviewer described the third row as suitable for two adults for long periods and noted its climate controls, USB-C ports and separate moonroof. That is a reviewer’s experience with the tested vehicle, not a guarantee for every adult, trip or configuration.

BMW listed the 2019 X7 at 203.3 inches long, with a 122.2-inch wheelbase. Its launch specifications gave cargo capacity as 48.6 cubic feet with the third row unused and 90.4 cubic feet with both rear rows folded. Those volumes depend on seat position. BMW’s launch release.

BMW listed two-axle air suspension as standard. Cars.com found the xDrive40i compliant and comfortable, with noticeable body roll. Its xDrive50i test car felt tighter and more comfortable, but that example had the optional Dynamic Handling Package. The difference should not be attributed to the V8 trim alone.

Standard equipment also varied between trims. BMW’s launch release listed Active Driving Assistant features on the xDrive40i, including blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and frontal and rear collision warnings. The xDrive50i added standard Parking Assistant Plus, a head-up display and Active Driving Assistant Professional. BMW also offered packages and options, including a factory tow hitch rated for 7,500 pounds. Equipment on a used example depends on how that vehicle was ordered.
What to check when buying a used 2019 X7
- Check the vehicle’s build sheet or equipment records to confirm its trim, seating layout and installed packages; model name alone does not establish optional equipment.
- Check the vehicle identification number for current recall status before purchase. Recall status is specific to the individual vehicle.
- Compare any asking price with current local listings and the vehicle’s condition and equipment. The historical launch and review prices above are not current used-market valuations.
