2025 Ford Mustang Dark Horse price: read the numbers carefully
The 2025 Mustang Dark Horse has more than one defensible published price because Ford’s order guide, later pricing references, and shopping-site data do not represent the same point in time or the same fee structure. The safest approach is to identify the source date and say whether destination, gas-guzzler tax, and options are included.

The order guide lists the Dark Horse Deluxe Package, equipment group 700A, at $4,995. It also lists a $1,300 gas-guzzler tax for the manual configuration and $1,000 for the automatic in the cited equipment table. Using only the order-guide figures, a manual Dark Horse with destination, the Deluxe Package, and the listed gas-guzzler tax would total $69,870 before tax, registration, dealer charges, and other options. An automatic with the same items would calculate to $69,570. That arithmetic should not be mistaken for the separate Dark Horse Premium starting price.

For an actual purchase, treat dealer asking prices, incentives, used-car listings, and remaining-new inventory as date- and region-specific. They should not be presented as a nationwide 2025 MSRP.
Engine and drivetrain specifications
The Dark Horse uses a modified version of Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8. On 93-octane fuel, Ford rates it at 500 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 418 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 rpm. The output is the same for the regular Dark Horse and Dark Horse Premium.
That is 20 hp more than the 480-hp 5.0-liter V8 in the standard Mustang GT, but the horsepower difference is not the whole story. The Dark Horse combines its modified engine with track-oriented chassis hardware, standard adaptive damping, a Torsen limited-slip differential, larger performance braking equipment, and access to a more serious Handling Package.
Manual or automatic?
The standard transmission is a six-speed TREMEC manual exclusive to the Dark Horse. It includes rev matching, which automatically blips the throttle during downshifts to help smooth transitions under hard braking or aggressive driving.
Ford also offers a 10-speed SelectShift automatic, identified as option code 44U in the 2025 order guide. The rear axle ratio changes with the transmission:
- Manual: 3.73 Torsen limited-slip rear axle.
- Automatic: 3.55 Torsen limited-slip rear axle.
The manual is the natural choice for drivers who want the most involvement and the quicker axle gearing. The automatic is the more convenient choice for commuting, traffic, and consistent launches. Neither transmission changes the Ford-rated 500-hp engine output.
What the Drift Brake does—and does not do
The Dark Horse includes Ford’s Drift Brake, an electronically controlled performance handbrake designed to help initiate controlled oversteer on an appropriate closed-course surface. Ford describes it as a class-first feature for the model.
It is not a license to drift on public roads. Losing traction can endanger other road users, damage the car, and violate traffic laws. Any use of the Drift Brake belongs on a properly managed closed course, with suitable safety equipment and permission.

Suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires
Every 2025 Dark Horse gets MagneRide adaptive damping. The system can alter damper response as conditions change, giving the car a broader range than a fixed-rate suspension. Brembo braking hardware and a Torsen limited-slip differential are also part of the Dark Horse’s standard performance package.
The available Handling Package is the option that most clearly changes the car’s track capability. It is not simply a cosmetic wheel-and-spoiler package. Ford’s 2025 order guide lists the following equipment:

- 305/30R19 front and 315/30R19 rear tires.

MagneRide is already standard on the Dark Horse; the Handling Package’s significance is the additional tire, wheel, aero, alignment-adjustment, towing, and chassis-tuning hardware. The package also enables available carbon-fiber wheels in the same 19-by-10.5-inch front and 19-by-11-inch rear sizes. Those carbon-fiber wheels require the Handling Package.

The wider Handling Package tires are a meaningful track upgrade, but they also make replacement planning more important. Before ordering Dark Horse Handling Package tires, confirm the model year, wheel package, tire sizes, load rating, speed rating, and intended street/track use. The front and rear sizes are different, so a generic Mustang GT tire search is not sufficient.
Independent performance testing
Ford’s official specifications establish the engine output and equipment, but the sources reviewed do not provide an official Ford 0-to-60-mph claim. Independent testing varies according to transmission, tire compound, weather, surface, launch technique, and test procedure.

The spread between the 4.1- and 4.6-second 0-to-60 results does not indicate that one figure is the universal Dark Horse specification. It shows why launch conditions and test configuration matter. The Edmunds skidpad and braking numbers also apply to the tested Handling Package and tire setup, not automatically to every Dark Horse.
The better way to understand the car is as a track-capable road Mustang rather than simply a straight-line special. It is not accurate to call it the fastest Mustang in every metric: Ford’s broader Mustang range includes higher-performance variants, and independent results depend on configuration.
Exterior design and 2025 Dark Horse photos
The Dark Horse is visually distinct from the Mustang GT through exclusive badging, unique front and rear fascias, a hood accent stripe, and a performance rear spoiler. The Handling Package adds a more aggressive aero treatment, including the front splitter and rear spoiler with Gurney flap.

Is the Dark Horse worth it over a Mustang GT?
