Driven: 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy Review—When Premium Feels Like Luxury

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy delivers Nappa leather, heated and ventilated second-row seats, a head-up display, standard AWD, and real three-row utility. It feels close to luxury in daily use, but its adequate V6, modest fuel economy, and mixed updated IIHS result are important limitations.

Yes—but with an important distinction. The 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy feels like a luxury SUV in the places a family uses every day: its seats, climate controls, cabin materials, infotainment, parking technology, and ride comfort. Nappa leather, heated and ventilated second-row seats, a head-up display, a Harman Kardon audio system, ambient lighting, and standard AWD make the top Palisade unusually well equipped.

It is not a Genesis, Lexus, or German luxury SUV. The V6 is only adequate, AWD fuel economy is modest, and the latest IIHS moderate-overlap result adds a meaningful safety qualification. The Calligraphy’s real achievement is delivering much of the comfort and convenience of a more expensive vehicle while retaining genuine three-row family utility.

The short answer

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy does make premium features feel ordinary in a family SUV. It has Nappa leather, heated and ventilated seating in the first two rows, heated third-row seats, a head-up display, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, ambient lighting, a quiet ride, and standard all-wheel drive. Those are the kinds of amenities that usually require moving into a luxury badge or spending heavily on options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But the Calligraphy is best described as near-luxury, not as a substitute for a Genesis GV80, Lexus TX, or Mercedes-Benz GLS. Its naturally aspirated V6 is merely adequate, fuel economy is modest, the updated IIHS moderate-overlap result is a significant qualification, and the ownership experience remains that of a well-equipped Hyundai. Its appeal is practical: it delivers much of the comfort and convenience families use every day without requiring a luxury-marque purchase.

What changed for the 2024 Hyundai Palisade

The U.S.-market 2024 Palisade was largely a carry-over model. Hyundai’s main addition was the Calligraphy Night Edition, an appearance-focused version of the top trim. Hyundai announced a launch price of $54,935 including destination charges, with standard HTRAC all-wheel drive.

The Night Edition’s changes are primarily visual. It uses dark-tinted chrome on the grille and rear bumper garnish, a dark rear Hyundai emblem, and a dark PALISADE badge. It is not a fundamentally different powertrain or chassis package; the appeal is a darker, more discreet interpretation of the already lavish Calligraphy.

Hyundai also broadened standard comfort equipment across the range for 2024:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • SEL and higher trims received dual automatic temperature control with automatic defogging.
  • SEL and higher trims received automatic second-row temperature control.
  • XRT and higher trims received rear side-window shades.
  • Limited and Calligraphy trims received ambient interior lighting.

For a Calligraphy buyer, these changes matter less as individual upgrades than as evidence of Hyundai’s strategy: useful comfort features are increasingly standard rather than buried in an expensive option package.

Why the Calligraphy feels more expensive than a typical mainstream SUV

The Calligraphy’s luxury argument is strongest inside the cabin. Its reported equipment includes Nappa leather seating, quilted leather door-panel trim, a suede-like headliner, an Ergo-motion driver’s seat, ambient lighting, and a color head-up display. These details do more than make the specification sheet impressive. They affect the parts of ownership drivers and passengers notice every time they use the vehicle.

Front-seat occupants get heating and ventilation, while the second row also receives heated and ventilated seats. The third row is heated as well, which is an unusually thoughtful feature for a vehicle intended to carry children or adults in all three rows. Remote Smart Parking Assist adds another luxury-style convenience, although it is best viewed as a parking aid rather than a replacement for the driver’s attention.

The standard second-row captain’s chairs create a seven-passenger configuration. That layout gives the second row a more comfortable, executive-style feel and makes access to the third row easier. The trade-off is that the Calligraphy cannot carry eight people in the way lower trims with a second-row bench can. Buyers who regularly need maximum seating capacity should compare the seating configuration, not just the trim name.

The audio and lighting equipment reinforces the impression. The Calligraphy includes a 12-speaker Harman Kardon system and ambient cabin lighting, while the overall design uses stitched surfaces, quilted details, and upscale textures to avoid the hard-plastic atmosphere common in some large family SUVs.

It is still genuinely useful as a family vehicle

A near-luxury interior would mean less if the Palisade sacrificed the utility that makes a three-row SUV worthwhile. It does not. KBB reports 42.4 inches of second-row legroom and 31.4 inches in the third row. Those numbers do not make the third row limousine-like, but they help explain why the Palisade is more practical than many stylish three-row crossovers.

Cargo capacity is similarly usable:

Configuration Reported cargo volume
Behind the third row 18 cubic feet
Third row folded 46 cubic feet
All rear rows folded Approximately 86–86.4 cubic feet

The exact maximum figure varies slightly by source, but the conclusion is consistent: the Palisade has enough space for everyday family equipment, luggage, groceries, and larger loads. The Calligraphy therefore feels premium without becoming precious or impractical.

Owners who want to preserve the Calligraphy’s upscale cabin should consider 2024 Hyundai Palisade all-weather floor mats, particularly for muddy shoes, snow, spilled drinks, or family road trips. Confirm that any listing explicitly covers the seven-seat captain’s-chair configuration before ordering, because fitment can vary by model year, row layout, and mat design.

A 2024 Hyundai Palisade cargo liner is another sensible ownership accessory for luggage, sports equipment, groceries, pets, or wet gear. The third-row configuration deserves the same fitment check: some liners are designed for a specific seat-up or seat-folded arrangement and may not protect the cargo floor properly in every position.

Technology is comprehensive rather than complicated

The Palisade does not make buyers assemble a luxury experience from a long options list. A 12.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, and multiple USB ports are documented across the range. Higher trims add more advanced camera, display, and audio equipment.

That integration is important to the Calligraphy’s value. The premium experience comes not only from leather and stitching but also from having the features a family uses daily already included: navigation, phone connectivity, multiple charging points, a surround-sound-style audio upgrade, a head-up display, and extensive parking assistance.

Hyundai’s SmartSense driver-assistance systems also contribute to the relaxed character. Documented features include automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and related systems. Higher trims can include Highway Driving Assist II and additional convenience-oriented assistance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These technologies reduce workload on long trips, but they do not make the Palisade autonomous. The driver remains responsible for monitoring traffic, the road, and the system’s operation, especially in poor weather, construction zones, or situations the sensors may not interpret correctly.

Powertrain: smooth and sufficient, not exciting

Every U.S.-market 2024 Palisade uses a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 producing 291 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on most trims, all-wheel drive is optional on lower trims, and AWD is standard on the Calligraphy.

The engine’s personality fits the Palisade’s mission. Car and Driver describes the vehicle as composed and relaxed, with a smooth ride and quiet cabin. Acceleration is adequate for merging, carrying passengers, and highway cruising, but it is not thrilling. The V6 does not provide the immediate shove or effortless strength that some turbocharged luxury SUVs deliver.

Standard AWD is convenient for buyers who live in snowy regions or regularly travel on wet, unpaved, or slippery roads. It also means the Calligraphy gives up some efficiency compared with the lightest, front-wheel-drive Palisade configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Drivetrain EPA-rated city EPA-rated highway
Front-wheel drive 19 mpg 26 mpg
All-wheel drive 19 mpg 24 mpg

These figures, reported by Car and Driver, are not a luxury-SUV strength. The AWD Calligraphy is a comfortable long-distance vehicle, but buyers who prioritize fuel economy should look at hybrid or more efficient alternatives rather than assuming the Palisade’s premium trim will be economical.

Ride quality and towing capability

The Palisade’s road manners support its near-luxury positioning better than its engine does. Its ride is composed, its cabin generally suppresses road noise, and its relaxed responses suit commuting and long highway trips. Car and Driver does note that wind noise can enter through the doors, so the cabin is not uniformly serene in every driving condition.

Up to 5,000 pounds of towing capability is available when the vehicle is equipped with the dealer-installed trailer hitch, according to Car and Driver. That is useful for a small camper, utility trailer, or recreational equipment, but it does not turn the Palisade into a heavy-duty tow vehicle. Buyers should verify the exact vehicle rating, hitch installation, trailer brakes, tongue weight, payload, and local requirements before towing.

A Palisade-compatible trailer hitch and towing accessories can be a legitimate ownership purchase for buyers using that capability, but professional installation and careful attention to the vehicle’s rating are more important than simply choosing the highest advertised hitch capacity.

Safety is strong overall, with one important caveat

The 2024 Palisade received an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation. IIHS lists Good ratings for the small-overlap front test, the original moderate-overlap front test, the updated side test, headlights, and pedestrian front crash prevention. It lists Acceptable ratings for seat-belt reminders and LATCH ease of use. The Palisade also has standard blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking listed by IIHS.

That is a strong overall safety profile, but it should not be presented as a clean sweep. IIHS lists a Poor result for the updated moderate-overlap front test for the tested 2022 Palisade Limited 4-door 4WD. IIHS says that result applies to 2022–2025 Palisade models built before September 2024. In other words, the responsible summary is strong safety equipment and a good overall IIHS designation, paired with a mixed updated-test result.

The test vehicle was a 2022 Limited rather than a 2024 Calligraphy, so readers should also distinguish between a model-line test result and a trim-specific claim. Safety ratings are useful evidence, but they are not a guarantee of identical performance in every crash or driving situation.

For families, the standard assistance systems are still meaningful. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear automatic braking can reduce the likelihood or severity of some common mistakes. They are safety aids, not permission to drive distracted or treat Highway Driving Assist II as self-driving technology.

Ownership value beyond the equipment list

The Calligraphy’s value depends on feature parity rather than badge prestige. It gives buyers a richly equipped interior, three usable rows, advanced convenience technology, standard AWD, and a long warranty structure without moving into a traditional luxury brand.

Car and Driver lists Hyundai’s U.S. coverage as:

  • A five-year or 60,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty.
  • A 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty for the first owner.
  • Complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles.

Actual warranty eligibility and transfer rules should be confirmed with Hyundai or the selling dealer, especially for a used vehicle or a vehicle that has changed owners. Still, the coverage is a meaningful part of the Palisade’s mainstream-brand value proposition.

Where the Calligraphy still falls short of a luxury SUV

The Calligraphy’s equipment can imitate many luxury touchpoints, but it does not erase every difference.

  • Performance: The V6 is smooth and capable but not especially powerful-feeling, and acceleration is merely adequate.
  • Efficiency: AWD fuel economy of 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway is expensive at the pump compared with more efficient three-row choices.
  • Noise control: Road noise is generally subdued, but wind noise can still enter through the doors.
  • Materials and craftsmanship: The cabin is richly appointed, but this is still a mainstream Hyundai rather than a bespoke luxury vehicle with uniformly exceptional materials.
  • Brand experience: Buyers do not receive the dealership environment, exclusivity, or prestige associated with a Genesis, Lexus, or German luxury marque.
  • Safety-test consistency: The updated moderate-overlap result prevents an unqualified claim that the Palisade excels in every current crash test.

Those shortcomings are not deal-breakers for the right buyer. They simply define what the Calligraphy is buying: comfort and equipment, not status, athleticism, or engineering exclusivity.

2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy: who should buy it?

The Calligraphy makes the most sense for a buyer who wants a quiet, comfortable family hauler and cares more about the features used every day than about the badge on the hood. It is especially appealing when second-row comfort, third-row usability, premium seating, parking assistance, and road-trip convenience matter more than fuel economy.

  • Heated and ventilated seating in the first and second rows.
  • Heated third-row seats.
  • Nappa leather, quilted trim, ambient lighting, and a suede-like headliner.
  • A head-up display and upgraded Harman Kardon audio.
  • Standard all-wheel drive without stepping into a luxury brand.
  • Up to 5,000 pounds of towing capability with the appropriate dealer-installed hitch and equipment.

Look elsewhere if your priorities are high fuel economy, aggressive acceleration, sharper handling, maximum seating capacity, a consistently top-tier crash-test record across every updated evaluation, or a luxury-brand ownership experience.

Verdict

The 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy turns premium into something close to luxury by making expensive-feeling amenities part of a practical family SUV. Its strongest qualities are not one dramatic specification but the way the features work together: comfortable seats, usable third-row space, a polished cabin, thoughtful climate controls, strong infotainment, parking technology, and a calm ride.

It does not become a Genesis or a Lexus simply because it has Nappa leather and a head-up display. The V6 is unremarkable, AWD is thirsty, wind noise is not fully eliminated, and the IIHS updated moderate-overlap result deserves honest attention. Even so, for families who want everyday luxury rather than luxury-badge prestige, the Calligraphy is one of the most convincing mainstream three-row SUVs of its model year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy a luxury SUV?

The Calligraphy is a near-luxury trim of a mainstream Hyundai, not a true luxury SUV. It offers premium features such as Nappa leather, a head-up display, heated and ventilated second-row seats, a Harman Kardon audio system, and upscale interior finishes, but it does not provide the brand prestige or bespoke materials and ownership experience of a Genesis, Lexus, or Mercedes-Benz.

Does the 2024 Palisade Calligraphy have all-wheel drive?

Yes. AWD is standard on the 2024 Palisade Calligraphy. Lower Palisade trims generally offer front-wheel drive as standard and AWD as an option.

What engine does the 2024 Palisade Calligraphy use?

The U.S.-market 2024 Palisade uses a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 making 291 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is smooth and capable, but acceleration is adequate rather than sporty.

How much can the 2024 Palisade tow?

The Palisade can tow up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with the dealer-installed trailer hitch and appropriate equipment. Buyers should verify the exact vehicle rating, payload, tongue weight, trailer-brake requirements, and hitch installation before towing.

Is the 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy safe?

The 2024 Palisade received an IIHS Top Safety Pick designation and has strong ratings in several tests. However, IIHS lists a Poor result in the updated moderate-overlap front test for the tested 2022 Palisade Limited, applying to 2022–2025 models built before September 2024. Its safety record should therefore be described as strong overall but not flawless.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2024 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy is a compelling near-luxury family SUV. It delivers a remarkably complete comfort and technology package, genuine three-row utility, and standard AWD, but buyers must accept average fuel economy, modest performance, and a mixed updated IIHS crash-test result.
