The 2025 BMW X6 is a performance-minded luxury SUV whose sloping roof makes a clear visual statement—and gives up some of the space that makes a conventional SUV useful. Its xDrive40i and M60i offer very different powertrains, but both pair an eight-speed automatic with all-wheel drive. The key question is whether the X6’s coupe-like shape and performance are worth less rear headroom and cargo capacity than you get in a traditionally shaped SUV such as the BMW X5.
What the 2025 BMW X6 offers
BMW sells the X6 in two main versions. The xDrive40i uses a 375-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with a 48-volt hybrid system; the M60i steps up to a 523-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. Both use an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, according to Car and Driver’s 2025 X6 review.
| Trim | Engine and output | Transmission and drive | 2025 EPA figures reported by Car and Driver |
|---|---|---|---|
| xDrive40i | Turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt hybrid system; 375 hp | Eight-speed automatic; all-wheel drive | 23 mpg city / 26 mpg highway |
| M60i | Twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8; 523 hp | Eight-speed automatic; all-wheel drive | 17 mpg city / 22 mpg highway |
Power and fuel-economy figures in the table are from Car and Driver’s year-specific review, not a current BMW specification page. BMW’s current X6 technical page also lists an X6 M Competition, but its current-lineup data should not be treated as a 2025 model-year specification sheet. Car and Driver reports that the X6 M is reviewed separately from the two main trims.
What the coupe-like roof gives up
The X6’s defining feature is also its central compromise. Its roofline slopes down toward the rear, creating a more dramatic profile than the conventionally shaped X5. Car and Driver notes that the shape costs some cargo capacity and rear-passenger headroom compared with the X5. That matters most if you regularly carry tall adults in back or need the cargo area to accommodate bulky, tall items.

BMW lists five seats for the X6 on its current lineup page, but that does not resolve how comfortable the rear seat will feel for a particular passenger. The X6 remains a five-seat SUV; the issue is the space and sense of openness created by the lower roof, not the nominal seat count.
Which X6 trim makes sense?
xDrive40i: the more restrained choice
The xDrive40i has a 375-hp inline-six and a 48-volt hybrid system. It is the logical starting point for shoppers who want the X6’s styling and all-wheel-drive layout without moving to the more powerful V8. Car and Driver reports 23 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for this 2025 trim. In that publication’s 75-mph highway fuel-economy test, its xDrive40i returned 29 mpg; that is one outlet’s route result, not a guaranteed figure for every driver or trip.

M60i: more power, higher fuel use
The M60i’s 523-hp twin-turbo V8 is the higher-output option among the two main trims. Car and Driver reports 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway for the 2025 M60i. The power increase comes with a substantial reported fuel-economy penalty compared with the xDrive40i, so consider how often you will use the additional performance when choosing between them.
Fuel economy and model-year figures
For 2025, Car and Driver reports EPA fuel-economy figures of 23 mpg city / 26 mpg highway for the xDrive40i and 17 mpg city / 22 mpg highway for the M60i. Its xDrive40i achieved 29 mpg on the publication’s 75-mph highway test route, a single test result that may differ from everyday driving.

BMW’s current technical page reports figures that differ from Car and Driver’s 2025 numbers. Because that page reflects current technical data rather than a confirmed 2025 specification sheet, it is not a like-for-like replacement. For a specific vehicle, verify the model-year and trim figures with the EPA or the vehicle’s window label.
Technology updates for 2025
Car and Driver describes the 2025 changes as minor technology updates. Highway Assistant availability is tied to the Driving Assistance Professional Package. BMW Maps and the My BMW App also receive updates. Active Lane Change with eye activation applies to vehicles built from March 2024 onward, but Car and Driver says it is not available on the X6 M. Availability can therefore depend on build timing, package and model; confirm the equipment on the specific vehicle rather than assuming every X6 has it.

How it compares with the X5 and coupe-SUV rivals
The most useful comparison is with the BMW X5: Car and Driver describes the X6’s sloping roof as the trade-off for its more rakish, polarizing profile. If rear headroom and cargo utility are priorities, the X5’s conventional shape is the more practical direction. If the X6’s design is the point, accept that compromise rather than expecting it to match the X5’s packaging.
Car and Driver identifies the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe as rivals. Those vehicles occupy the same broad coupe-SUV niche, but a meaningful trim-by-trim verdict on price, ride, handling, rear-seat comfort, cargo space, fuel economy and equipment requires matching specific versions and model years. The available 2025 X6 figures do not establish those comparisons, so check each rival’s corresponding trim and equipment before deciding.

Is the 2025 BMW X6 worth it?
The X6 makes the clearest case for itself when its distinctive shape and performance matter more than maximizing rear-seat headroom and cargo flexibility. The xDrive40i is the less powerful, more fuel-efficient of the two main trims by Car and Driver’s reported 2025 figures; the M60i raises output to 523 hp while using more fuel. If the coupe-like roof is not a priority, compare the X5 before paying for the X6’s styling-led compromise.
This is a specification- and source-based review, not a first-hand test drive: no writer-specific experience in a 2025 X6 was supplied. Ride quality, steering feel, cabin noise, visibility and on-road handling should be assessed in person in the exact trim and equipment you are considering.
