What changes between the xDrive40i and M60i?
xDrive40i: the lower-cost, lower-consumption option
The xDrive40i pairs a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid inline-six with 375 hp. It is the less expensive trim and has the better fuel-economy figures of the two principal versions in Cars.com’s 2025 listings. For buyers who want the X6’s shape and standard all-wheel drive without stepping up to the V8, this is the more restrained choice.

M60i: V8 power at a higher price and fuel cost
The M60i moves to a 4.4-liter mild-hybrid V8 rated at 523 hp. It costs $20,050 more at listed starting MSRP than the xDrive40i and is rated at 19 mpg combined rather than 24 mpg. The trade is substantially higher output for greater fuel consumption.
Cars.com discusses the high-performance X6 M separately from the two-trim comparison, reporting 617 hp and track-focused hardware. That is a distinct step beyond the M60i, not a third trim in the two-version pricing table above. For context only, BMW’s current technical page lists current-model figures of 375 hp/398 lb-ft for xDrive40i, 523 hp/553 lb-ft for M60i, and 617 hp/553 lb-ft for X6 M Competition; those current figures are not a 2025 archived specification sheet.
Design, space and everyday practicality
BMW bases the X6 on the mid-size X5 but gives it a tapered fastback roofline. That profile is the main visual distinction: it makes the X6 look sportier, while Cars.com notes the sloping roof limits rear visibility and cargo space compared with the more practical X5. The X6 still has five seats, but shoppers who regularly carry bulky loads or prioritize an open view through the rear glass should compare the X5 before choosing the coupe-like body.
