The redesigned 2025 BMW X3 30 xDrive improves its powertrain response, handling and digital equipment, but trades away some cabin tactility and straightforward controls. That is the balance in BMWBLOG reviewer Steven Paul’s week with the SUV: a capable, technologically advanced compact luxury crossover whose touch-heavy interface and divisive styling may not suit every buyer.
What changed for the 2025 X3 30 xDrive?
The 2025 model is the fourth-generation X3 sold in the U.S. BMW changed the gasoline model’s name from X3 xDrive30i to X3 30 xDrive, dropping the “i.” Under the new name is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Consumer Reports’ visible search-result text lists output at 255 horsepower. Mild-hybrid assistance is not the same as a plug-in hybrid system.
BMW’s launch announcement described the X3 30 xDrive as a “balanced combination of technology, efficiency, and power.” That is the manufacturer’s positioning; Paul’s impressions after a week behind the wheel provide a more mixed picture of how the redesigned SUV delivers on it.
BMW highlighted a Curved Display, BMW Operating System 9 with QuickSelect, more standard equipment and expanded digital options. The technology is a substantial part of the new X3’s identity, though Paul found the interface’s reliance on touch controls less satisfying than the physical-feeling controls some owners may prefer.

How did the X3 30 xDrive drive?
Powertrain response
Paul praised the powertrain, describing it as one of the redesigned X3’s strengths. The four-cylinder and 48V mild-hybrid system are intended to deliver the model’s performance without turning it into a plug-in or full electric vehicle. His positive assessment is one reviewer’s impression from a week with the vehicle, not a claim that every driver or use case will produce the same result.
Handling and overall character
Paul also praised the X3’s dynamic handling. His review presents the 30 xDrive as an evolution that retains engaging road manners while adding contemporary technology. BMW identifies the M50 as a higher-power sibling, but the available reporting does not provide a complete independent head-to-head test; the 30 xDrive’s strengths should not be read as a direct comparison with that model or a rival SUV.

Where does the redesign compromise?
Touch-heavy controls
The cabin’s digital focus comes with a practical trade-off: Paul criticized the touch-heavy controls. Drivers who value physical-feeling buttons and controls may find everyday interactions less intuitive than in an older X3. The new display and software are features, but their presence alone does not settle whether the interface works well for an individual driver.
Interior execution and exterior styling
Paul’s assessment of interior quality was mixed, rather than uniformly positive. He also found the exterior styling polarizing. Those are subjective judgments, but they point to two areas worth examining in person: whether the materials and cabin details feel right for the price, and whether the new design appeals to you from all angles.

What did the 2025 X3 30 xDrive cost at launch?
BMW announced a U.S. base MSRP of $49,500 for the 2025 X3 30 xDrive, plus $1,175 for destination and handling, in its June 18, 2024 launch announcement. That is the launch price for the base vehicle, not a current quote, an equipped-car price or a statement of today’s incentives. BMW Group PressClub USA’s launch announcement provides the original pricing context.
Consumer Reports’ search-result text says it bought a 2025 X3 30 xDrive for $56,860 for its road test. That is a reported test-car purchase figure, not the base MSRP. The full report was inaccessible, so the vehicle’s option and configuration breakdown is not established; the price should not be used to infer what equipment accounts for the difference. What does the IIHS award cover?
The 2025 BMW X3 is listed as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ only for vehicles built after April 2025. The award is therefore not a blanket qualification for every 2025 X3 regardless of build date. IIHS shows Good ratings for the small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front and updated side tests. The institute also notes that some ratings are based on a 2025 X3 test conducted by BMW. Is the 2025 X3 30 xDrive reliable?
The available evidence does not establish a long-term reliability record, repair-cost estimate or complete recall history for this model. A week-long driving review can speak to impressions of performance and usability, but it cannot answer whether a vehicle will be dependable over years of ownership. For a used example, check its specific service and recall history rather than treating the review or a reader’s question as reliability evidence.

Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you want a redesigned compact luxury SUV whose reviewer praised powertrain response and dynamic handling, and you value a digital-first cabin.
- Look closely before buying if physical controls, consistently polished cabin materials or conservative exterior styling are high priorities. Paul’s review flags each as a potential compromise.
- Verify before comparing prices or safety claims: distinguish the launch base MSRP from an equipped test-car figure, and confirm a specific 2025 vehicle was built after April 2025 to meet the IIHS award qualification.
For the official model overview, BMW describes current X3 features and specifications at BMW USA’s X3 page. That page includes 2026 model information, so its current equipment details should not automatically be applied to a 2025 vehicle.
