The 2025 BMW M440i Gran Coupe is a gasoline-powered mild hybrid, not an electric vehicle. BMW’s refresh adds updated styling and cabin technology, while its 3.0-liter inline-six and 48-volt system are rated at 386 hp. The all-electric BMW Gran Coupe is the i4, a separate model.
Is the 2025 BMW M440i Gran Coupe electric?
No. BMW identifies the M440i’s fuel type as gasoline: it uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. The electric Gran Coupe in BMW’s 2025 announcement is the i4. The distinction matters: the M440i does not have electric-only range or a charging capability as an EV would. BMW’s technical page lists gasoline for the six-cylinder versions and electric for i4 variants.
What changed for the 2025 refresh?
BMW announced the U.S.-market refresh on April 24, 2024, with production scheduled to begin in July 2024. The update covers exterior details, interior equipment, iDrive software and powertrains; equipment availability can vary by market and configuration. BMW’s launch announcement describes the changes.
Powertrain and performance
BMW says the M440i uses the B58B30M2 3.0-liter inline-six, rated at 375 hp, paired with a 48-volt starter-generator that can contribute up to 11 hp. BMW gives the resulting system output as 386 hp and torque as 398 lb-ft. The engine is paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

BMW estimates 0–60 mph in 4.7 seconds for the M440i Gran Coupe and 4.3 seconds for the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. BMW’s 2025 announcement lists a 155 mph electronically limited top speed. Its current technical page shows a 130 mph figure for the M440i xDrive; that live-page specification is not a historical 2025 spec sheet, so the figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Exterior
BMW describes a revised kidney-grille surround and updated headlights, with available Laserlight taillights featuring laser-lit accents. M440i models get M-specific high-gloss black grille and trim details. BMW also lists Cape York Green metallic and Vegas Red metallic among the new paint choices, and available 20-inch BMW Individual Aero bi-color wheels for M440i models. Paint, lighting and wheel availability depend on equipment and market.

Interior and iDrive
The cabin update includes a Curved Display and iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5, with QuickSelect. BMW says the flatter home-screen menu provides access to functions, while climate and seat- or steering-wheel-heating controls can be operated by touch or voice. Updated steering-wheel choices, trim, upholstery and air-vent controls are also part of BMW’s description; these details are manufacturer claims, not an independent assessment of usability.

Choose between them first by powertrain: the M440i is a gasoline mild hybrid, while the i4 is electric. The M440i’s published output and acceleration figures are for the specific configurations BMW names above. For a meaningful vehicle-to-vehicle comparison, check the exact i4 version and M440i drivetrain, then compare the equipment on the actual builds—such as lighting, wheels, upholstery and display features. The 2025 announcement discusses both vehicles, but their shared Gran Coupe format does not make them the same model or powertrain.
