The 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge is easiest to recommend if you like Volvo’s design and want a premium-feeling electric crossover with a distinctive fastback roof. That shape also compromises rear visibility, rear-seat headroom and cargo usefulness compared with the more upright XC40 Recharge. Choose the rear-wheel-drive version for its longer EPA-estimated range, or the all-wheel-drive version for more power and traction at the cost of rated range.
What changed for the 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge?
For the U.S. 2024 model year, Volvo added a Single Motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version alongside the Twin Motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) model. The RWD car uses an 82 kWh battery and a 248 hp rear motor; Volvo lists up to 297 miles of EPA-estimated combined range. The AWD version has a 78 kWh battery, a 255 hp rear motor and a 147 hp front motor, for 402 hp total and up to 257 miles of EPA-estimated combined range. Which C40 powertrain should you choose?

The trade-off is straightforward: the RWD version has the longer official range, while AWD brings a second motor and substantially more power. Car and Driver estimates 0–60 mph in about 6.6 seconds for RWD and about 4.4 seconds for the 402 hp AWD version; those are the publication’s estimates, not measurements from this review vehicle. Its Sweden test-drive account describes the RWD car as perky. Neither estimate should be treated as a guarantee for every car or condition. How much range does the 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge have?
Volvo lists up to 297 miles of EPA-estimated combined range for the RWD C40 and up to 257 miles for AWD. ENERGY STAR’s 2024 C40 Recharge Twin listing specifies 257 miles, 99 MPGe combined and 34 kWh per 100 miles; those efficiency figures apply to the Twin listing, not the RWD trim. Official range is a comparison rating, not a promise of how far a particular driver will go. In Car and Driver’s 75-mph highway test, the C40 covered 200 miles. That is one publication’s result on its test route, not a universal real-world range figure. Highway speed, temperature, terrain, weather and vehicle use can change the outcome.
How long does it take to charge?
DC fast charging
Volvo says the RWD battery can accept up to 200 kW DC and estimates about 28 minutes for a 10%–80% charge. The manufacturer lists a 150 kW DC peak for AWD. Peak power is a limit, not a constant charging rate: temperature, battery condition, charger output and the car’s charging curve affect the time at a station. Volvo’s figures are model-year claims; a real charging stop may take longer. Volvo’s announcement outlines the qualifications.

Home charging
A Level 2 home charger is the relevant setup for routine overnight charging. Cars.com reports Volvo’s estimate of eight hours for a 10%–90% charge using an 11 kW Level 2 charger. Actual AC charging depends on the vehicle’s onboard charging capability, the electrical circuit, installation and settings. Have a qualified electrician assess a proposed installation; the available specifications are not enough to prescribe a circuit for an individual home. What is the C40 like to live with?
Fastback looks versus everyday practicality
The sloping roof gives the C40 a more distinctive profile than the upright XC40 Recharge, but the style has practical costs. Cars.com identifies compromised rear-seat headroom, cargo usefulness and rear visibility compared with the XC40. If you regularly carry tall rear passengers, bulky cargo or need a clear view out the back, try both body styles in person before choosing.

Ride and handling
Car and Driver describes the ride as mostly compliant, with some shivering over broken pavement, and the handling as composed but less sharply steered than some rivals. Those are the publication’s impressions, not a claim that every driver or road will produce the same experience. A test drive over the roads you use most is the best way to judge the ride.
Cabin technology and equipment
Cars.com lists Google-based touchscreen infotainment, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, heated front seats and driver-assistance features among the standard equipment it describes. A heat pump, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise control, Pilot Assist and a Harman Kardon audio system are listed as available features. Equipment varies by trim and individual vehicle, so check the specific car’s build sheet rather than assuming a feature is present.

Volvo describes the C40 as having a leather-free interior, Google built-in and one-pedal driving on its current U.S. product page. It shares the Volvo electric-crossover context but uses a more upright shape; the C40’s fastback styling comes with less rear headroom, cargo usefulness and rear visibility, according to Cars.com. The right choice depends on whether the C40’s silhouette matters more to you than the XC40’s more practical cabin shape.

Cars.com also names the Audi Q4 e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 as competitors. Their equipment, range and pricing depend on the exact 2024 configuration. No current used-price comparison is established here, so there is no defensible value ranking without checking local listings, vehicle condition, mileage and trim.
Should you buy a 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge?
Consider the C40 if its design and Volvo character are priorities and you are comfortable with the fastback’s visibility and space compromises. The RWD model makes the stronger case for range; AWD is the better match if its extra power and traction matter more to you. Compare the C40 directly with an XC40 Recharge, verify the equipment on the exact used vehicle, and plan around your charging access and typical driving rather than assuming the EPA rating or a quoted charge time will match every trip.
The 2024 model is now a used-car or remaining-stock consideration in the U.S.: Car and Driver identifies 2024 as the C40 Recharge’s final U.S. model year. Availability varies, so verify the status of a specific car and check current Volvo naming separately. Volvo says a NACS fast-charging adapter is available through U.S. Volvo retailers for access to additional DC fast chargers; confirm compatibility and network access for the car and region before relying on it.
