If you were shopping in late 2023 and could wait a few months, Edmunds’ shortlist highlighted five incoming 2024 models: the Kia EV9, Toyota Tacoma, Honda Prologue, Hyundai Santa Fe and Chevrolet Traverse. That was an editorial preview published October 18, 2023—not a current launch calendar or evidence of what is available in October 2026. The models below stand out for different reasons, so the useful question is which redesign or new powertrain fits your needs.
Which 2024 trucks and SUVs did Edmunds recommend waiting for?
Edmunds selected five vehicles in a story distributed by the Associated Press on October 18, 2023. The list was an editorial shortlist, not a comprehensive inventory of 2024 models, a formal award or a tested head-to-head ranking. Its arrival windows referred to the months after publication.
Kia EV9: a three-row electric SUV
The EV9 was presented as a roomier three-row electric option, with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. Edmunds reported an expected range of more than 300 miles at the time. That was a launch-era expectation in the 2023 article, not an independently tested result or a current EPA figure.
Toyota Tacoma: a redesigned midsize pickup
The new Tacoma brought turbocharged four-cylinder powertrains and an available i-FORCE MAX hybrid. Toyota’s specifications and its specialized Trailhunter grade are relevant if you want a closer look at the truck’s capability and off-road equipment.

Honda Prologue: Honda’s electric SUV entry
Edmunds described the Prologue as Honda’s first new electric SUV for this model-year story, with front- and all-wheel-drive options and an expected range around 300 miles. That range was an article-era expectation, not a current EPA finding established here.
Hyundai Santa Fe: a redesigned three-row SUV
The redesigned midsize Santa Fe drew attention for its distinctive design, cargo utility and cabin technology. Those qualities may matter to households comparing passenger space and everyday flexibility, but the shortlist did not provide a comparative cargo test or measured space figures.

Chevrolet Traverse: a technology-focused redesign
Edmunds highlighted the Traverse’s standard 17.7-inch center screen, wireless phone connectivity and six USB ports, along with available Super Cruise and a Z71 trim. Chevrolet described the model as redesigned from the ground up and anticipated early-2024 availability.
What the 2024 Tacoma offered truck buyers
Toyota said the U.S.-market 2024 Tacoma was redesigned on its TNGA-F truck platform, with a high-strength boxed-steel ladder frame, two turbocharged 2.4-liter powertrains and a multi-link coil-spring rear suspension available on most grades. Toyota’s published power figures differ by powertrain:

These are Toyota specifications, not independent test results; the hybrid is available on select configurations, not every Tacoma. Toyota described the Trailhunter as a purpose-built overlanding grade. Its listed standard equipment included Old Man Emu forged monotube shocks, a high-mount air intake and 33-inch Goodyear Territory Rugged Terrain tires. Those are Trailhunter-specific details, not lineup-wide equipment.
Other notable 2024 trucks beyond the five-vehicle shortlist
The Edmunds selection was not a complete list of notable trucks. Two other models illustrate why truck shoppers should compare exact configuration and intended use rather than relying on a single maximum figure.

Chevrolet Silverado EV
Chevrolet’s April 2024 update listed 450 miles of EPA-estimated range for the fleet-oriented 4WT and 440 miles of GM-estimated range for the RST. The estimate types differ, so the numbers should not be treated as a like-for-like independent comparison. Chevrolet also listed up to 10,000 pounds of RST trailering capacity and 1,500 pounds of RST payload. It cited DC fast charging up to 350 kW on WT and RST, and up to 10.2 kW of offboard power with optional equipment. These maxima depend on trim or equipment.
Ford F-Series Super Duty
Ford’s January 2024 account of 2024 model-year content described available trailer-assistance features and onboard power, as well as maxima that apply only to particular configurations and packages. The 40,000-pound gooseneck towing figure is for an F-450 Regular Cab with the available 6.7-liter high-output diesel and Gooseneck Tow Package. The 8,000-pound payload figure is for an F-350 XL Regular Cab 4×2 DRW with the Gas Heavy-Duty Payload Package. Neither number describes every Super Duty.
How to decide whether a truck or SUV is worth waiting for
Start with the job the vehicle must do, then compare the details that determine whether a specific version can do it. A top-line capability figure can be misleading if it belongs to a different trim, cab, bed or equipment package.
For a truck
- Match the segment to the job: a midsize pickup such as the Tacoma and a full-size electric pickup such as the Silverado EV serve different needs.
- Check the exact configuration: verify towing and payload for the engine, cab, bed, drivetrain and package you would actually buy. Treat manufacturer maxima as configuration-specific specifications.
- Choose a powertrain deliberately: compare the Tacoma’s turbocharged gas and available hybrid options, or consider an electric truck’s range and charging requirements.
- Pay for off-road equipment only if it fits your use: the Trailhunter’s listed overlanding hardware is specific to that grade.
For an SUV
- Count usable seating rows: the EV9, Santa Fe and Traverse were presented as three-row choices, but seating capacity alone does not establish how comfortable each row is for your passengers.
- Consider passenger and cargo needs together: the 2023 shortlist called out the EV9’s roominess and Santa Fe’s cargo utility, but did not supply comparable measurements.
- Compare powertrain and range: for the EV9 or Prologue, check the exact version and current range rating rather than relying on launch-era expectations.
- Separate everyday technology from terrain capability: the Traverse’s screen and connectivity features answer a different need from a trim or system intended for off-road use.
What this historical preview cannot tell you
The 2023 shortlist and the cited manufacturer announcements do not establish a universal winner, comparative test results, current new- or used-vehicle prices, local inventory, incentives or long-term reliability outcomes. Availability also varies by location and date. Check current listings and confirm the exact model year, trim and equipment with a dealer before making a purchase decision.
