Your truck’s configuration, certification-label ratings and actual loaded weight determine what it can safely tow and carry.
2024 Tundra maximum towing and payload
Toyota’s U.S.-market figures for the 2024 model year are up to 12,000 pounds of towing capacity and up to 1,940 pounds of payload. Toyota announced those headline maximums in 2023, and its 2024 Tundra brochure provides ratings by configuration.
The brochure separates ratings by i-FORCE 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 and i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, 4×2 or 4×4 drivetrain, cab and bed combination, and trim. The 1,940-pound payload maximum applies to select i-FORCE 4×2 configurations; many other configurations have lower payload ratings, including hybrid examples. Do not assign a headline maximum to a trim or truck without checking the applicable brochure row and the truck’s label.
Why your truck’s rating may be lower than the maximum
Toyota’s Trailer Weight Rating (TWR) is calculated with assumptions that include a base vehicle, one driver and one front passenger, plus applicable towing equipment. Optional equipment, additional passengers and cargo reduce the available trailer rating so the truck remains within its weight limits. Toyota also notes that actual maximum tow capacity depends on curb weight plus cargo, occupants and added equipment; weighing the truck is the way to establish its exact weight.
#1 Best Overall
- VEHICLE FITMENT— Compatible with 2000-2006 Toyota Tundra (Excludes towable bumper models) . Please check vehicle compatibility before purchase.
- VERSATILE DESIGN — This class 3 hitch equips your vehicle with a standard 2-inch x 2-inch hitch receiver (not compatible with vertical hanging bikes / bike racks that require the bikes to be hung / mounted vertically). Includes a hitch cover to block dirt, moisture, and debris from the receiver tube, preventing rust and corrosion.
- HEAVY DUTY TOWING CAPACITY — Gross Trailer Weight (GTW): 6,000 lbs. Tongue Weight (TW): 600 lbs. Weight Distribution Capacity (WD): 10,000 lbs. Weight Distribution Tongue Weight (WDTW): 1,000 lbs. (limited to lowest-rated towing component).
- SECURE TOWING PERFORMANCE — Tested for towing safety, delivering a solid and stable connection that helps reduce movement for a safer and smoother towing experience.
- RUST, CHIP, UV-RESISTANT — This tow hitch is protected with a unique dual-coat finish of rust-resistant liquid A-coat and highly durable black powder coat. The two finishes are co-cured together for exceptional resistance to rust, chipping and UV rays.
Payload is not an amount reserved just for cargo in the bed. Toyota defines gross vehicle weight while towing as the vehicle’s weight, including occupants, cargo and optional equipment, plus trailer tongue weight. That means passengers, accessories, tools and the load pressing down on the hitch all use capacity.
Understand the ratings that limit a tow
A trailer can be within the advertised tow maximum while the loaded truck or combination still exceeds another limit. Toyota’s 2024 Tundra Owner’s Manual says not to exceed the applicable ratings below.

| Rating | What it limits |
|---|---|
| TWR (Trailer Weight Rating) | Maximum gross trailer weight: the trailer plus its cargo. |
| GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) | Maximum gross weight of the truck. When towing, this includes occupants, cargo, optional equipment and trailer tongue weight. |
| GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) | Maximum load on each individual axle. |
| GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating) | Maximum combined weight of the loaded truck and loaded trailer. |
Payload is bounded by the difference between the truck’s GVWR and its actual weight. The brochure’s maximum payload is not necessarily available on a specific truck or after people, cargo, accessories and hitch load are added.
How to check what your Tundra can actually tow
- Identify the truck’s configuration. Match its powertrain, drivetrain, cab, bed and trim to the corresponding row in the Toyota brochure. Treat the brochure figure as a configuration rating, not a substitute for the truck’s own certification-label ratings.
- Read the certification label. Check the vehicle’s GVWR and front and rear GAWR, then use the truck’s actual payload information rather than assuming it has the brochure’s maximum payload.
- Account for the entire load. Include occupants, cargo, installed options and accessories, hitch equipment, and trailer tongue weight in the truck’s weight. Include trailer cargo in the trailer’s gross weight.
- Weigh when the numbers are uncertain. Toyota describes platform scales as a way to measure loaded weights. Compare the loaded truck and combination with GVWR, each GAWR, GCWR and TWR; a tongue-weight scale can measure tongue load, but does not establish compliance with every rating.
Tongue weight and Toyota’s towing requirements
For conventional towing, Toyota recommends tongue weight equal to 9% to 11% of the gross trailer weight. That weight bears on the truck and counts toward its GVW, so a trailer that is below the TWR can still push the truck past GVWR or an axle rating.

Designed to handle demanding towing needs with confidence and reliability.
- MAXIMUM STRENGTH & DURABILITY – Built from solid, all-welded steel for superior strength and stability. Each hitch is rigorously tested for fatigue and stress to ensure reliable performance in all driving conditions.
- Use a sway-control device with sufficient capacity when gross trailer weight is over 2,000 pounds.
- Use a weight-distributing hitch with sufficient capacity when gross trailer weight is over 5,000 pounds.
- The manual lists unbraked TWR as 1,000 pounds; if gross trailer weight exceeds the unbraked TWR, trailer service brakes are required.
- For gross trailer weight over 3,000 pounds, Toyota recommends a trailer with two or more axles.
- Do not exceed 65 mph (104 km/h), the posted towing speed limit, or the trailer manual’s limit—whichever is lowest.
Follow the manual and verify hitch fitment and ratings for the exact truck. A scale that measures tongue weight is a measurement aid, not proof that the loaded truck, trailer and combination meet all limits.

Do not choose between trucks by the maximum tow figure alone. For each candidate, compare its powertrain, drivetrain, cab and bed, trim and installed equipment, certification-label GVWR and GAWR, actual truck weight, occupants and cargo, trailer gross weight, and measured tongue weight. A heavier option package or different configuration can change how much capacity remains for a real load.

For a planned trip, check the loaded weights rather than relying only on a brochure maximum. Toyota’s manual and brochure provide the ratings and assumptions; the certification label and actual weights determine whether a particular truck-and-trailer combination is within them.
