The 2024 Toyota Tundra Platinum i-FORCE MAX is a compelling full-size truck if you want strong acceleration, useful towing capacity and a well-equipped CrewMax cabin. Its hybrid powertrain makes 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, but the fuel-economy improvement over the nonhybrid Platinum is only 2 mpg combined in Toyota’s estimates—and Car and Driver found real-world efficiency fell short of those estimates. The trade-off is clear: considerable capability, but modest fuel savings for a hybrid.
What the Platinum i-FORCE MAX is
The i-FORCE MAX pairs a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor/generator and a 1.87-kWh, 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery. Toyota rates the system at 437 hp at 5,200 rpm and 583 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpm, with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Toyota describes it as a hybrid system; the cited material does not describe it as a plug-in. Toyota’s 2024 Tundra brochure lists i-FORCE MAX as an option within the trim lineup, rather than the only Platinum powertrain.
Car and Driver reports that the motor sits between the engine and transmission and recorded a 5.7-second 0–60 mph time in its test. That is the publication’s test result, not a guarantee for every truck or driving condition. Car and Driver’s 2024 Tundra Hybrid review also describes the hybrid as a CrewMax-only configuration.
What fuel economy to expect
Toyota’s 2024 brochure lists these EPA-estimated ratings for the Platinum. City, highway and combined figures are shown in that order:

Those are estimates, not road-test results. Based on Toyota’s listed figures, the hybrid improves combined economy by 2 mpg over the corresponding nonhybrid Platinum in either drivetrain. Toyota USA’s 2024 comparison material states: “The 4×4 models of the Toyota Tundra Hybrid have EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of up to 19/22/21 mpg (city/highway/combined).” Toyota’s comparison page provides that manufacturer-published figure.
Car and Driver says the hybrid’s real-world efficiency falls behind EPA estimates, which makes “thirsty for a hybrid” a fair expectation-setting description—not a universal mileage figure. A representative long-term MPG average for the exact 2024 Platinum hybrid configuration is not established here, so individual results should not be inferred from the EPA ratings or a single publication’s assessment.

How much can the 2024 Platinum hybrid tow?
Toyota’s 2024 brochure lists different maximum tow ratings by drivetrain and bed length. The Platinum hybrid figures are:

These are configuration-specific maximums, not a promise that every Platinum hybrid can tow that much. For a real trailer, passengers, cargo, hitch load, options and the truck’s own payload rating all matter. Check the door-jamb labels and owner’s manual for the exact vehicle before towing. Toyota’s 2024 brochure is a starting point for the model-year table, not a substitute for the vehicle-specific ratings.

The truck’s towing equipment includes an integrated trailer brake controller and Tow/Haul modes by trim; Toyota’s trim table also lists trailer backup guidance features for Platinum. CrewMax buyers could choose a 5.5-foot or 6.5-foot bed where offered, so bed length is part of both the utility decision and the tow-rating comparison.

Cabin storage
The battery sits beneath the rear seats, according to Car and Driver, reducing interior storage space compared with the nonhybrid layout. That is worth checking in person if you regularly use the rear-seat storage area for tools, gear or valuables.

Premium equipment
Toyota’s 2024 hybrid comparison page says Platinum and higher trims include a 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen, JBL 12-speaker premium audio and a panoramic view monitor. Equipment can vary by vehicle and installed packages, so a used-truck buyer should confirm the individual window sticker. Off-road options for 2024
Toyota announced that the TRD Off-Road package became available on the Platinum 4×4 for the 2024 model year. The TRD three-inch suspension lift was also offered as a factory-installed accessory; neither should be assumed to be standard on every Platinum. Is the 2024 Tundra Platinum hybrid worth choosing?
The i-FORCE MAX makes the strongest case when torque, acceleration and towing utility matter more than maximizing fuel savings. The EPA estimates show a 2-mpg combined advantage over the equivalent nonhybrid Platinum, while the hybrid adds its own under-seat storage compromise. Buyers focused on fuel economy should weigh that relatively small official gain against their driving, drivetrain and truck-use needs rather than assuming the hybrid will deliver a dramatic reduction in fuel use.
Before buying, compare the exact truck’s drivetrain and bed, verify its equipment and window sticker, and use its labels and documentation to establish payload and towing limits. The published maximum tow number alone does not determine what a particular truck and trailer combination can safely handle.
