The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport is a strong fit if you want a sportier-looking Tacoma with road-oriented suspension tuning, but it is not automatically the best choice for most buyers. Its hood scoop, black 18-inch wheels and red TRD sport-tuned shocks set it apart; the TRD Off-Road is the more natural comparison for buyers who prioritize off-road hardware. Before choosing, match the specific truck’s powertrain, cab, bed, drivetrain, equipment and ratings to how you will use it.
What makes the 2024 Tacoma TRD Sport different?
The 2024 Tacoma began a new generation and was offered in eight grades: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, Trailhunter and TRD Pro. Toyota positioned the TRD Sport around distinctive styling and sport-tuned suspension rather than the dedicated off-road equipment associated with the TRD Off-Road.
Toyota lists these TRD Sport identifiers: black 18-inch TRD wheels, color-keyed door handles and overfenders, a hood scoop, black exterior badging, aluminum pedals and red TRD sport-tuned shocks. The trim also has larger front brakes, which Toyota says are fitted to TRD grades and higher. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent ride or performance findings. Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma launch release gives the grade details.
Is the TRD Sport the right mid-range Tacoma for you?
Choose it for the look and road-oriented setup
The TRD Sport makes sense if you like its styling and want a sport-tuned shock setup for a truck that will spend much of its time on pavement. Toyota’s description supports that positioning; it does not establish that the Sport rides better than other grades or is the best value for a typical buyer.

Compare it with the TRD Off-Road if trails matter
The TRD Off-Road is the more relevant alternative when off-road equipment is the priority. Toyota identifies Bilstein remote-reservoir monotube shocks and an available front stabilizer-bar disconnect as features associated with that grade. Consider where you drive, the equipment on the particular truck, and whether you need those features rather than choosing by trim name alone. Toyota’s grade and capability overview describes the lineup.
Check the actual truck’s configuration
Grade is only one part of the decision. Confirm the engine, drivetrain, cab and bed, options, and the ratings shown for the specific vehicle. Toyota says most grades use a redesigned coil-spring multi-link rear suspension; leaf springs remain on the SR, SR5 XtraCab and TRD PreRunner—not the TRD Sport. The Tacoma uses a high-strength boxed steel-ladder frame, according to Toyota.

Which engines are available, and what do the figures mean?
The TRD Sport is available with the turbocharged 2.4-liter i-FORCE engine or the optional i-FORCE MAX hybrid; the hybrid is not the only powertrain choice. Toyota gives the following maximum figures for applicable 2024 Tacoma configurations:
| Powertrain | Toyota-published output | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4-liter turbo i-FORCE | Up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft | Toyota states these maximums for applicable grades above SR; output depends on configuration. |
| i-FORCE MAX hybrid | Up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft | Maximum system output. The system combines the turbo engine with a 48-hp electric motor and a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery integrated into the eight-speed transmission. |
Toyota’s April 23, 2024 release gives an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined for i-FORCE MAX Tacoma models. That is a configuration-dependent estimate, not a guaranteed result for every TRD Sport; actual fuel economy varies with configuration and use. See Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX specifications and estimate.

Do not assume Tacoma headline towing or payload figures apply
Toyota’s published maximums are tied to named grades, not to every Tacoma or every TRD Sport:
- 6,500-pound maximum towing: Toyota identifies this figure for the SR5 i-FORCE and TRD PreRunner XtraCab—not as a blanket TRD Sport rating.
- 1,709-pound maximum payload: Toyota identifies this figure for the TRD Off-Road—not as a blanket TRD Sport rating.
Use the towing and payload ratings for the exact truck, consulting its labels and owner’s manual. Equipment such as an available trailer brake controller and Trailer Back Up Guidance also depends on the vehicle and options fitted. Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma overview identifies the grades attached to its headline capability figures.

What should you check before buying?
- Identify the exact configuration. Confirm engine, drivetrain, cab and bed, plus the options included on the truck you are considering.
- Match the trim to your use. Favor the TRD Sport if its appearance and sport-tuned shocks suit your priorities; compare the TRD Off-Road’s specified hardware if regular trail use is central.
- Verify ratings and towing equipment. Check the vehicle’s labels and owner’s manual rather than applying a lineup maximum to every TRD Sport.
- Check bed accessory fitment. Toyota lists an available tonneau cover, but fit depends on the truck’s configuration and the accessory listing. Verify cab and bed fit before ordering.
- Confirm safety and available aids on the vehicle. Toyota says Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across 2024 Tacomas. Check the specific truck for any optional towing aids or accessories you need.
What did the TRD Sport cost at launch?
Toyota’s April 2024 release listed a $46,300 launch MSRP for the i-FORCE MAX TRD Sport, excluding delivery processing and handling. This is a dated launch price, not a current-market quote or a price for every TRD Sport configuration. Toyota’s release does not establish current inventory or transaction prices.
