2024 three-row hybrid SUVs: fuel economy compared
The table compares conventional-hybrid ratings from the 2024 Fuel Economy Guide. Combined MPG is the clearest basis for comparison; city and highway figures show how each rating is composed.

Source for all table ratings: U.S. DOE and EPA, 2024 Fuel Economy Guide. The guide’s listed configurations matter: a model name by itself does not establish one MPG figure. In particular, the Sorento Hybrid’s FWD and AWD ratings differ, and the Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited has a different rating from the other Grand Highlander Hybrid configuration shown.
How to read these MPG ratings
Use the combined figure to make a quick comparison, then consider whether your driving is mostly city or highway. The city and highway estimates are not promises for a particular commute. The 2024 Fuel Economy Guide cautions: “Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits and your vehicle’s condition.”

These figures identify strong fuel-economy examples among the configurations cited here. They should not be read as a definitive ranking of every 2024 SUV with three-row seating: the cited material does not establish a complete, authoritative list across all models, trims, and market availability.
Where the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid fits
The 2024 Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid is a separate comparison because its electric-plus-gas rating uses MPGe, not gasoline MPG. The 2024 Fuel Economy Guide lists 79 MPGe in electric-plus-gas operation, a 32-mile electric range, and 34 mpg combined when operating on gasoline.

MPGe expresses energy efficiency on a gasoline-equivalent basis; it is not the same measure as miles per gallon of gasoline. The EPA explains that it represents how far a vehicle can travel using energy equivalent to one gallon of gasoline in its PHEV-label explainer. Keep the Sorento PHEV’s MPGe, electric range, and gasoline-mode MPG distinct rather than placing 79 MPGe in a gasoline-MPG ranking.
Charging changes how useful the electric figures are
A plug-in hybrid can run without being plugged in, but it will not reach its maximum electric range or fuel economy without charging. Regular charging lets it use more electricity and less gasoline; if you expect to charge infrequently, the gasoline-mode rating is the more relevant figure to compare with conventional hybrids. Electricity use and charging access also affect a household’s overall running costs, so the MPGe figure alone does not establish that a PHEV will cost less to operate.

A gasoline-only reference point
For context rather than as a hybrid competitor, Mazda USA’s 2023 announcement for the 2024 CX-90 3.3 Turbo S gives an official manufacturer estimate of 25 mpg combined (23 city/28 highway). This gasoline-only example illustrates why fuel type and operating mode should be clear in any comparison; it is not evidence of a complete ranking of three-row SUVs.

What to check before choosing
- Match the exact version. Check model year, trim, and drivetrain—especially FWD versus AWD—before relying on a rating.
- Use the right measure. Compare conventional hybrids by combined MPG; assess a PHEV using its electric range, MPGe, gasoline-mode MPG, and your likelihood of charging.
- Account for real driving. EPA estimates are standardized comparison figures, while options, conditions, habits, and vehicle condition influence actual mileage.
- Check the seating and cargo layout. Fuel economy alone does not establish whether a particular SUV’s third row and cargo space suit your family; compare the vehicles’ configurations directly.
