The 2024 Tacoma is an all-new generation with eight grades, a turbocharged four-cylinder across the lineup, and an optional hybrid on selected trims. The right choice depends less on the badge than on how you’ll use it: cab and bed size, rear- or four-wheel drive, transmission, towing needs, and whether comfort or off-road equipment matters most. Toyota’s specifications make those differences clear, but they are not a substitute for a road test: the information available here does not establish how the truck rides, steers, brakes, or accelerates in independent driving.
What changed for the 2024 Tacoma?
The 2024 model begins a new Tacoma generation. Toyota offers SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro grades, with cab, bed, drivetrain, powertrain, and equipment varying by configuration. That breadth is the source of the truck’s appeal—and a reason not to shop by trim name alone.
For example, SR is offered with either an XtraCab two-seat layout or a Double Cab, while several Double Cab grades offer five seats and a choice of 5- or 6-foot bed. Toyota says the new bed volume increases 7 percent over the previous generation. Bed length and bed accessories still depend on the exact grade and configuration. Toyota USA Newsroom
Which 2024 Tacoma powertrain is right for you?
| Powertrain | Output | Availability and transmission |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE | Up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft with automatic; manual versions are listed at 270 hp and 310 lb-ft | Listed across the lineup; selected non-hybrid configurations offer a six-speed manual. Automatic versions are also offered. |
| 2.4-liter turbocharged i-FORCE MAX hybrid | Up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft; Trailhunter is listed at 323 hp and 465 lb-ft | Eight-speed automatic. Standard on Trailhunter and TRD Pro; available on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. |
These are Toyota-published ratings, not independent test results. The 326-hp figure is the headline maximum for i-FORCE MAX, not the rating for every hybrid Tacoma. Toyota’s i-FORCE MAX announcement identifies the hybrid’s selected grades, while the powertrain overview discusses the new Tacoma engines.

- 【High quality】Made of ABS plastic, sturdy and durable. Fit perfectly under the driver’s side air vent
- 【Easy to install & remove】Upgrade design, no tape required. Push to the right to install, and you can easily remove it when needed
Choose i-FORCE if you want the manual option
The six-speed manual is limited to certain non-hybrid configurations; it is not offered with i-FORCE MAX. Check the individual vehicle’s equipment and drivetrain rather than assuming every TRD Sport or TRD Off-Road has the same transmission availability.
Choose i-FORCE MAX for the hybrid’s higher stated output
The hybrid combines a turbocharged engine with electric assistance and an eight-speed automatic. It is the standard powertrain in Trailhunter and TRD Pro, and an option on three other grades. Limited hybrid also differs mechanically from other versions: Toyota specifies full-time AWD and standard Adaptive Variable Suspension for that configuration.
How much can a 2024 Tacoma tow?
Toyota’s brochure lists these grade-level maximums. They are configuration maxima, not a guarantee for every truck or load; verify the rating for the specific vehicle. Toyota’s towing disclosure says, “Never tow beyond a vehicle’s published towing capacities.”

| SR5 XtraCab | 6,500 lb |
| TRD PreRunner | 6,500 lb |

Toyota’s 2023 announcement specifically highlights up to 6,500 lb for specified SR5 i-FORCE and TRD PreRunner XtraCab grades. Confirm the exact cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, and equipment on the vehicle you are considering; the maximum does not automatically apply to every version of a grade. Toyota USA Newsroom
Available towing aids include a trailer brake controller, Trailer Backup Guide, Straight Path Assist, and camera views, with availability varying by grade or package. A towing package can include a Class-IV receiver and 7-pin/4-pin wiring. Match any trailer equipment to the truck’s rating and the trailer’s requirements, and confirm fitment before buying accessories.
What is the Tacoma’s payload?
Payload changes with configuration. Toyota’s brochure lists i-FORCE automatic maxima from 1,230 lb for certain 4×4 XtraCab versions to 1,700 lb for a TRD Off-Road 6-foot-bed version. The brochure’s hybrid entries range from 1,425 to 1,705 lb across the grades shown. These are listed configuration figures, not a single payload rating for all Tacomas. Check the door-jamb label on the actual truck for its payload limit and account for passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight.

How do the Tacoma trims differ?
SR and SR5: general-purpose starting points
SR is offered in XtraCab and Double Cab forms. SR5 spans multiple cab and bed combinations and includes versions associated with Toyota’s 6,500-lb tow maximum. Compare the specific vehicle’s drivetrain, bed, and package; neither the badge nor the grade-level tow table alone establishes the rating of an individual truck.
TRD PreRunner: rear-wheel-drive-oriented XtraCab
The TRD PreRunner is an XtraCab grade oriented around rear-wheel drive. Toyota lists a 6,500-lb maximum tow rating for the i-FORCE XtraCab configuration.
TRD Sport: street-oriented equipment
TRD Sport adds street-oriented styling and equipment, including a hood scoop. It is available with i-FORCE and, in selected configurations, a choice of automatic or manual transmission; i-FORCE MAX is also available.

TRD Off-Road: equipment for trail use
Listed i-FORCE versions add off-road hardware including an electronically locking rear differential and Bilstein remote-reservoir shocks. Toyota also lists a Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism among upgrade or package equipment. A hybrid version is available, so check which components are fitted to the particular truck rather than assuming all TRD Off-Road configurations are identical.
Limited: comfort and technology
Limited emphasizes cabin and technology equipment, including a 14-inch multimedia display, JBL premium audio, a head-up display, and power running boards. Toyota specifies full-time AWD and standard Adaptive Variable Suspension on the i-FORCE MAX Limited.
Trailhunter: factory overlanding equipment
Trailhunter pairs i-FORCE MAX with Toyota-described overlanding equipment, including named ARB and Old Man Emu components and a high-mount air intake. Toyota lists this grade’s hybrid output at 323 hp and 465 lb-ft.

EPA estimates vary by configuration. Toyota’s brochure gives 20 city/26 highway mpg for an SR 4×2 automatic and 21 city/26 highway mpg for an SR5 4×2 automatic. It also marks several i-FORCE MAX figures as projected manufacturer estimates: 22 city/24 highway/23 combined mpg for several hybrid grades, and 23/24/24 mpg for Limited hybrid. Keep the projected label in mind when comparing those entries. Actual mileage varies with vehicle condition, driving, and location. Toyota’s 2024 Tacoma overview also presents a generalized 21/26 figure; use the brochure’s configuration-specific entry when comparing particular trucks.
What safety and technology equipment is standard?
Toyota says every 2024 Tacoma includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The brochure lists Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist, and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Proactive Driving Assist and full-speed-range cruise functionality have grade or transmission qualifications in Toyota’s brochure, so check the equipment list for the exact version.
These are driver-assistance features, not autonomous driving. Toyota also lists wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility on cited grades, while screen size and audio differ by trim and package. The 14-inch display and JBL 10-speaker system are not universal Tacoma equipment.

What should you check before buying?
- Configuration: Confirm cab, bed length, drivetrain, engine, and transmission on the window sticker or vehicle specification.
- Capability: Match the individual truck’s towing rating to the trailer and check its door-jamb payload label for passenger and cargo limits.
- Equipment: Verify which off-road hardware, towing aids, screen, audio system, and safety-feature qualifications are included on that vehicle.
- Accessories: For a Tacoma bed mat, tonneau cover, bed rack, or cargo organizer, confirm model year, cab, bed length, trim, and rail compatibility. Toyota documents an available tonneau cover and a Toyota Genuine full bed rack co-engineered with ARB, but fitment is vehicle-specific.
- Driving impression: Arrange a test drive in the exact powertrain and configuration you intend to buy. Toyota’s specifications do not establish independent ride, steering, braking, or acceleration impressions.
Is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma worth buying?
The 2024 Tacoma is worth considering if its range of cab, bed, powertrain, and grade combinations lets you match the truck to a clear use case. SR and SR5 cover general-purpose needs, TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road separate street- and trail-oriented equipment, and the upper grades add comfort or factory overlanding and off-road hardware. The published figures help narrow the shortlist, but a buyer should verify the exact truck’s equipment and ratings—and drive it—before deciding. Toyota’s published material does not establish street prices, independent reliability, crash-test results, recalls, current inventory, or used-market value, so those questions require separate, current checks.
