The choice chiefly changes fuel economy and towing capacity: Toyota lists up to 25 mpg combined and 5,000 pounds of towing for a gas front-wheel-drive model, versus up to 36 mpg combined and 3,500 pounds for a hybrid front-wheel-drive model. Seating, cargo space and equipment also depend on configuration and trim.
What powertrains does the 2024 Highlander offer?
Toyota’s U.S. 2024 brochure describes two powertrain families. The gas Highlander has a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 265 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Highlander Hybrid uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid system with 243 horsepower of combined net output. These are Toyota-published specifications, not independent test results. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive availability, fuel economy and equipment vary by powertrain and configuration. Check the window sticker or vehicle’s exact build rather than assuming every Highlander has the same drivetrain or features.
How do fuel economy and towing compare?
Toyota lists the following maximum figures for front-wheel-drive versions in its 2024 brochure. The mpg numbers are projected EPA estimates intended for comparison; actual mileage varies with vehicle condition, driving and other factors.

The hybrid’s higher listed fuel economy comes with a lower listed towing capacity. Neither figure alone determines which version is the better fit: consider how often you tow, the trailer’s loaded weight, your driving, annual mileage and local fuel prices. Confirm the capacity and requirements for the exact vehicle and equipment before towing; do not treat the maximum as a target that overrides the vehicle’s limits.
How many people does it seat, and how much cargo fits?
Depending on configuration, the 2024 Highlander seats seven or eight. A seven-seat layout uses second-row captain’s chairs; an eight-seat layout has a second-row bench. Confirm the layout in the specific vehicle, especially when shopping used.

Toyota lists 16.0 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row, 48.4 cubic feet behind the second row and 84.3 cubic feet behind the front row. The smallest figure is the useful one when all three rows are occupied: luggage space is limited with the third row in use. Toyota’s 2024 Hybrid page also lists up to 84.3 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded.
Which features depend on trim?
Multimedia and comfort equipment change across trims. Toyota’s brochure lists an 8-inch multimedia system on Hybrid LE and an available 12.3-inch system. Higher trims add features such as heated and ventilated front seats, JBL audio and a panoramic view monitor. These are not universal across the lineup; check the trim and options on the vehicle you are considering in the Toyota 2024 brochure.

Toyota lists Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ among the model’s safety equipment. Its driver-assistance features include pre-collision assistance, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, road sign assist and radar cruise control. They assist the driver and do not replace attention or safe driving.
What gasoline does a 2024 gas Highlander use?
For the 2024 gas Highlander, Toyota specifies unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. Toyota warns that lower-octane fuel can cause knocking, and persistent knocking may damage the engine. Refer to the 2024 Highlander fuel information and the owner’s manual for the exact powertrain and market. This fuel specification is for the gas model; consult the hybrid manual for hybrid-specific guidance.

What warranty information is listed for the hybrid battery?
Toyota’s 2024 Highlander Hybrid model page lists hybrid battery coverage of 10 years or 150,000 miles from first use, whichever comes first, for model years 2020 onward. Review the terms and exclusions applicable to the specific vehicle in Toyota’s warranty information; the 2024 Highlander Hybrid page is the model-year source for the listed coverage.
How can you check whether a 2024 Highlander has a recall?
Recall eligibility is determined by the vehicle identification number (VIN), not just the model year. Toyota USA Newsroom published a March 5, 2026 notice about a recall involving certain 2021–2024 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid vehicles. The notice’s issue, remedy and affected VINs should be confirmed directly; the announcement’s broad model-year range does not establish that every 2024 vehicle is included.

Before buying or relying on a vehicle’s recall status, enter its VIN in Toyota’s recall information or check with the relevant vehicle-safety regulator. Ask the seller or a Toyota dealer about any open campaign and whether required work has been completed.
