Tesla’s North American manual varies the limit by wheel size and passenger count; its European manual gives different regional guidance and tells owners to check the specific vehicle’s Certificate of Conformity, statutory plate, or hitch label. Confirm the limit for your exact vehicle before towing.
North American Model Y towing capacity depends on passengers and wheels
Tesla’s Model Y 2020–2024 North America Owner’s Manual lists different trailer limits according to wheel size, passenger count, and seating configuration. The published figures below are not universal limits for every 2024 Model Y.

Seven-seat configurations have additional limits and restrictions based on passenger count and wheel size. Check the manual’s full table and match the row to your seating configuration and wheels; do not infer a seven-seat limit from the five-seat figures above.
Payload and tongue weight can lower what you can tow
The trailer’s loaded weight is only part of the calculation. Tesla says maximum towing capacity assumes the vehicle does not exceed its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Passengers, luggage, accessories, and other equipment count toward vehicle weight and can reduce the trailer weight available within that rating.

Tongue weight—the downward force the trailer places on the hitch—is also separately limited. Tesla’s North American manual lists maximum tongue weights by configuration and says tongue weight must not exceed 10% of the maximum trailer weight. Use the matching manual-table row for both limits, and account for the carrier or other equipment mounted to the vehicle.
European limits and vehicle-specific checks are different
Tesla’s Model Y 2020–2024 Europe Owner’s Manual states a 1,600 kg braked-trailer limit and a maximum tongue weight of 100 kg. It directs owners to the vehicle’s Certificate of Conformity, statutory plate, or hitch label for the permitted total trailer weight, including cargo and equipment, and the permitted tongue weight. Those vehicle-specific documents are the key check; do not apply North American figures to a European vehicle.

Braking instructions also differ by region. The North American manual recommends a separate braking system with an independent controller for trailers over 1,650 lb (750 kg). The European manual requires a separate braking system with an independent controller for trailers over 750 kg. Follow the instruction and applicable requirements for the vehicle’s market, and confirm that the trailer, wiring, and braking equipment are compatible.
Check the tow equipment fitted to your Model Y
Tesla’s Model Y Tow Package description lists a tow bar, 2-inch receiver, 7-pin connector, trailer harness, and tow-mode software. Tesla says the package may be purchased with the vehicle or through its shop. Its tow-hitch service documentation notes that towing capability depends on market region, vehicle configuration, purchased options, and software. Verify the equipment and capability of the individual vehicle rather than assuming every 2024 Model Y has the same setup.

Expect towing to reduce driving range
Tesla says towing increases vehicle weight and aerodynamic drag, so driving range can decrease. The cited Tesla guidance does not establish a universal percentage loss; actual range will depend on the vehicle, trailer, load, route, and driving conditions.
Do not confuse trailer capacity with accessory-carrier capacity
For hitch-mounted accessories such as a bike carrier—not a trailer—Tesla’s North American manual gives a 160 lb (72 kg) vertical-load limit, including the carrier’s own weight. This accessory limit is not a trailer towing rating; check the manual and hitch guidance for the vehicle before fitting a carrier.

Use this checklist before towing
- Identify the vehicle’s market and seating configuration, then check the matching regional owner’s manual.
- For a North American vehicle, match passenger count and wheel size to the manual’s towing and tongue-weight table. For a European vehicle, check the Certificate of Conformity, statutory plate, or hitch label.
- Weigh or establish the trailer’s loaded weight, including cargo and equipment, and confirm its tongue weight stays within the vehicle-specific limit.
- Include occupants, cargo, and installed equipment when checking the vehicle against its GVWR.
- Confirm the hitch, connector, trailer harness, tow-mode software, and any required trailer braking system are present and compatible.
Tesla cautions that safe towing takes experience and that its instructions do not cover every skill required. Do not exceed the applicable towing or tongue-weight limit.
