The 2024 Toyota bZ4X makes its strongest case with a comfortable ride, supportive front seats and familiar Toyota ownership—not standout range or rear-seat space. Its EPA-estimated range spans 222 to 252 miles depending on trim and drivetrain, so whether it suits you depends on your routes, charging access and passengers. Here’s what the road tests and specifications say, and what to check before choosing one.
What the 2024 Toyota bZ4X offers
The U.S.-market 2024 bZ4X is a two-row, five-seat battery-electric crossover offered in XLE and Limited trims, with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). FWD uses one motor; AWD adds a second. Toyota announced 201 horsepower for FWD and 214 horsepower for AWD. Toyota’s 2024 model-year announcement gave starting MSRPs of $43,070 for XLE and $47,180 for Limited, excluding the dealer processing and handling fee. Those are original launch prices, not current used-car values.

These are comparison estimates for a fully charged vehicle in ideal conditions, not promises of distance on a particular trip. Toyota says speed, temperature, accessories, route, driving behavior, charging habits and battery age can reduce actual range.

How it drives
Car and Driver describes the bZ4X as a composed daily driver: its suspension absorbs bumps without feeling floaty, and its steering is reasonably well-weighted. The publication found both drivetrains perkier than their modest output figures might suggest. Its AWD test car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds; that is Car and Driver’s test-track result, not a claim about every configuration or test condition. Car and Driver’s 2024 review reports 215 horsepower for AWD, slightly different from Toyota’s 214-hp announcement.
The main control caveat is regenerative braking. Car and Driver says the bZ4X has limited regenerative-braking choices and does not offer true one-pedal driving. Drivers who expect to slow to a stop using the accelerator alone should try its braking behavior on a test drive.

Range, highway use and charging
EPA range is only part of the ownership picture. In Car and Driver’s dual-motor highway test, the bZ4X traveled 160 miles. That is a result from one publication’s test, not a universal real-world range prediction; speed, weather, route and charging conditions affect what any driver will get. Highway commuters and frequent long-distance drivers should plan around their own routes rather than treating the EPA figure as a highway guarantee.
Car and Driver reports battery capacities of 63.4 kWh for the single-motor model and 65.5 kWh for the dual-motor model. It says the onboard charger is 6.6 kW and describes Level 2 replenishment as taking about nine hours. Toyota’s reported DC fast-charging claim is to add 80 percent in just under an hour, with peak rates of up to 150 kW for FWD and 100 kW for AWD. These are charging specifications and claims, not a promise that every charging stop will take that long. Toyota cautions that cold temperatures, battery condition and charge level, charger specifications, and repeated fast-charge sessions can slow charging. Toyota’s brochure covers those limitations.

Car and Driver says the included cable can connect to 120- or 240-volt power. A suitable 240-volt home setup can support overnight charging, but the cable does not eliminate the need to check the home circuit, outlet and charging rate. Anyone considering a separate J1772 Level 2 charger should confirm connector compatibility, electrical capacity and installation requirements before buying.
Cabin and cargo practicality
The bZ4X seats five and Toyota lists 27.7 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear seat in the standard configuration. Its brochure lists a different cargo figure for the JBL-equipped configuration, so confirm the equipment on the specific car rather than assuming that all versions have the same space. Car and Driver describes useful cabin storage and room for four adults, but notes that there is no front trunk.

In an AP-published comparison, Edmunds judged the Honda Prologue roomier in the rear, while the Toyota had somewhat more cargo space. That is a useful distinction for shoppers to test in person: bring the people, child seats or bulky items the vehicle actually needs to accommodate. The AP-published Edmunds comparison also says both vehicles can take roughly 30 minutes to charge from a low state of charge to about 80 percent at a public fast charger under ideal conditions.

Not literally—but the case for the bZ4X is strongest for shoppers who value its ride comfort, supportive front seats and Toyota familiarity more than maximum range or rear passenger room. Edmunds’ comparison, as published by AP, says both the bZ4X and Prologue should satisfy brand loyalists, but favors the Honda for its higher maximum EPA range and roomier rear seating. That is Edmunds’ comparison-period judgment, not a universal ranking or current price comparison.
