2024 Toyota 4Runner trims: what changes
The grade name is only a starting point when comparing used 4Runners. Drivetrain availability and included equipment differ, so verify the individual vehicle’s original configuration and installed options rather than assuming every example of a grade is identical.

2024 4Runner 4WD vs. 2WD
Toyota offered the 2024 4Runner in 2WD and 4WD, but “4WD” does not describe one identical system across the lineup. Toyota describes available part-time 4WD with high and low ranges as well as available full-time 4WD; its materials identify the Limited with full-time 4WD.
- For mostly paved-road use: Compare 2WD and 4WD examples based on the conditions you regularly drive in, equipment, and vehicle condition.
- For low-traction conditions or trails: Confirm which 4WD system the specific 4Runner has and whether the high- and low-range capability and grade-specific off-road equipment suit your intended use.
- For technical off-road use: Check for hardware such as the electronic-locking rear differential and Crawl Control rather than relying on a TRD badge alone.
These are configuration and use distinctions, not a claim that one drivetrain is best for every buyer. Toyota’s brochure describes the available drivetrain systems.

2024 Toyota 4Runner towing capacity and limits
Toyota states a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds and maximum tongue weight of 500 pounds for the 2024 4Runner. These are published ceilings; the actual allowable trailer and tongue loads depend on the specific vehicle, its equipment and load, and the trailer setup.
- Check the owner’s manual for the limits and towing instructions that apply to the vehicle.
- Account for occupants, cargo, and other load in the 4Runner; towing capacity does not cancel other vehicle load limits.
- Confirm the trailer’s loaded weight and tongue weight against the applicable limits, as well as the towing equipment and setup.
Toyota’s 2024 brochure cautions: “Never tow beyond a vehicle’s published towing capacities. See Owner’s Manual for limitations.” The Toyota 2024 brochure and Toyota USA Newsroom announcement state the towing figures.

Toyota says every 2024 4Runner includes Toyota Safety Sense P. What to check before buying a used 2024 4Runner
- Identify the exact grade and drivetrain. Confirm whether the vehicle is 2WD or 4WD and, for 4WD, which system it has.
- Verify the equipment you need. Check for the specific off-road hardware, seating configuration, and other features rather than inferring them from the trim badge.
- Assess the individual vehicle. Review its condition and service history; Toyota’s maximum ratings do not establish the condition or remaining capability of a particular used example.
- Match any towing plan to the vehicle. Read that vehicle’s manual and account for passengers, cargo, trailer weight, tongue weight, and towing equipment.
- Check accessory fitment carefully. Toyota’s accessory material says floor mats and liners are model-year-specific and should be secured with their fasteners to reduce pedal-interference risk. Confirm exact trim and SKU fitment before buying.
