Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe 2024 Suzuki GSX-8R and Yamaha YZF-R7 are both fully faired middleweight twins, but their published specs point to different priorities. Suzuki lists the larger engine, a lower seat and a larger fuel tank; Yamaha lists a lower weight figure, more detailed suspension adjustability and a lower starting MSRP. Those differences can help narrow the choice, but they do not establish which bike is faster, more comfortable or better on track. For US buyers, compare local dealer quotes and sit on both motorcycles before deciding.
How do the 2024 GSX-8R and R7 compare on paper?
The figures below come from US manufacturer pages for the 2024 models. They are specification and price listings, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. In particular, Suzuki labels its weight figure “curb” while Yamaha labels its “wet,” so the difference is not a perfectly like-for-like measurement.
| Specification | 2024 Suzuki GSX-8R | 2024 Yamaha YZF-R7 |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 776 cc, liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin | 689 cc, liquid-cooled DOHC inline twin |
| Transmission | 6-speed constant mesh | 6-speed with assist-and-slipper clutch |
| Published weight | 452 lb curb | 414 lb wet |
| Seat height | 31.9 in | 32.9 in |
| Fuel capacity | 3.7 US gal | 3.4 US gal |
| Published US price | $9,439 base MSRP, plus $460 destination and $100 freight surcharge on Suzuki’s 2024 overview page | $9,199 starting MSRP; taxes, title, prep and destination are excluded |
| Warranty shown | 12-month unlimited-mileage limited warranty | 1-year limited factory warranty |

What do the engine and weight figures tell you?
Displacement is not a performance verdict
Suzuki’s 776 cc parallel twin has 87 cc more displacement than Yamaha’s 689 cc inline twin, calculated from the manufacturers’ listed figures. Yamaha describes the R7’s CP2 engine and 270-degree crank; Suzuki identifies a liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin. Displacement and engine layout alone do not show which motorcycle accelerates harder or feels better in a particular riding situation. The available specifications do not provide a controlled power, acceleration or dyno comparison.

Read the weight labels carefully
The listed numbers differ by 38 lb arithmetically, but Suzuki calls its 452 lb figure curb weight and Yamaha calls its 414 lb figure wet weight. Because the manufacturers use different labels, do not treat that subtraction as a precise same-method comparison. Weight can matter when maneuvering or changing direction, but the published figures alone do not establish which bike will feel lighter to a given rider.
Which bike may suit street riding and rider fit?
The GSX-8R’s listed seat is one inch lower than the R7’s, and its tank holds 0.3 US gallon more. Those differences may help frame a showroom comparison, but neither seat height nor tank capacity by itself determines how a motorcycle fits, how far a rider can go between stops, or how comfortable it will be. Yamaha lists 58 mpg as an estimate, not a measured guarantee; real-world fuel use and range depend on conditions and riding.

Cycle World’s July 1, 2024 buyer’s guide describes the GSX-8R as “The fully faired version of the GSX-8S naked twin.” Yamaha presents the R7 around its CP2 engine, Supersport styling and separate clip-on bars. These are useful clues to each model’s positioning, not substitutes for checking reach to the bars, footpeg position, bend at the knees and comfort in the riding posture you expect to use. Cycle World’s 2024 GSX-8R guide and Yamaha’s R7 features page describe those positions and concepts.
How do suspension and equipment differ?
Yamaha’s listed adjustability
Yamaha specifies a front fork adjustable for preload, rebound and compression, and a rear shock adjustable for preload and rebound. It also lists an assist-and-slipper clutch. Yamaha describes the quick-shift system as optional, so do not assume it is standard on every 2024 R7.

Suzuki’s listed equipment
Suzuki lists a SHOWA inverted front fork, a linked rear shock and ABS-equipped Nissin front and rear brakes. Its feature details also name Suzuki Intelligent Ride System features. The two manufacturers’ equipment descriptions do not establish that branded systems are equivalent, nor do they show how the motorcycles compare in a controlled ride test. Check the exact bike’s equipment and configuration with a dealer.
What should US buyers expect to pay?
Suzuki’s 2024 overview page lists a $9,439 base MSRP, plus a $460 destination charge and $100 freight surcharge. Yamaha lists a $9,199 starting MSRP and says taxes, title, prep and destination are not included. These are manufacturer-page figures for the US market, not a complete purchase price or a promise of current local pricing. Confirm the model year, fees, dealer-set charges, inventory and any current offers in a written quote before comparing totals.

Which should you choose for commuting, road rides or track days?
Neither specification sheet proves a universal winner. Start with the use that matters most, then confirm fit and equipment in person:
- For street use and everyday fit: Sit on both bikes and compare posture, reach, footpeg position and low-speed confidence. The lower listed seat on the Suzuki is a useful starting point, not a fit guarantee.
- For suspension setup: The Yamaha’s published adjustment points give a clear set of suspension settings to discuss with a dealer or qualified suspension technician. The specifications do not say how either motorcycle will perform for your weight, roads or pace.
- For track days: Consider your riding position, setup needs and budget for track preparation, then seek a suitable test ride or advice from a qualified instructor. The available sources do not establish a lap-time, braking-distance or handling winner.
- For purchase value: Compare written out-the-door quotes for the same model year and verify which equipment is included. The lower published starting MSRP does not by itself determine the lower final price.
Before visiting a dealer, write down your intended use and any fit concerns. At the dealership, inspect the actual bike, try the riding position and ask which accessories or options are fitted. Suzuki lists accessory categories including a solo seat cowl, smoked windscreen, billet clutch and brake levers, tank and engine-cover protectors, clip-on tank bags and branded apparel; verify exact part numbers and year fitment before purchase.
