The 2024 Subaru Solterra improves on its predecessor’s charging claim and adds driver-assistance features, but it does not solve the central question for an electric SUV: how well does its range fit your driving? Subaru quotes EPA-estimated range of 222 to 227 miles, while two independent highway tests recorded 200 and 210 miles under different test conditions. The Solterra may make sense if you can charge at home, value standard all-wheel drive and mostly drive locally. Frequent highway travelers should weigh its range and charging stops carefully.
What changed for 2024?
Subaru’s 2024 updates focused on charging and driver assistance rather than a longer official range. The company says the Solterra can DC fast-charge from 10% to 80% in about 35 minutes—nearly half the time of the 2023 model—and adds battery conditioning intended to help with cold-weather charging. Subaru also highlights DriverFocus and Front-Cross Traffic Alert among the new or expanded assistance features. The changes matter most to owners who use public fast chargers or drive in cold conditions. The 35-minute figure is a claimed 10-to-80-percent charging window, not a guarantee that every charging stop will take that long; actual results depend on conditions and the charger.
How far does the 2024 Solterra go?
EPA estimates by trim
Subaru’s 2024 brochure lists EPA-estimated range of 227 miles for Premium and 222 miles for Limited and Touring. Those figures are useful for comparing official estimates, but they are not promises of the distance available on every trip. 2024 Solterra brochure

Independent highway tests
Highway driving produced lower results in the cited tests. Car and Driver recorded 200 miles for a Touring driven at a steady 75 mph. Consumer Reports reported 210 miles in its 70-mph highway test. These are results from distinct tests with different protocols, not directly interchangeable measurements or a prediction for every owner. For a buyer, the practical distinction is between a daily commute and a long highway leg. If your regular round trip leaves a comfortable buffer below the estimated range, home charging can make the Solterra straightforward to live with. If a trip routinely approaches the car’s highway-test distances, plan for charging stops rather than assuming the EPA number will hold at speed.

How practical is charging?
Charging at home
Subaru describes a 240-volt Level 2 home setup as taking about nine hours for a full recharge. It estimates that Level 1 charging adds roughly 2–4 miles of range per hour. Both are manufacturer guidance; actual charging time and added range vary with conditions. Subaru’s charging guidance
That makes home-charging access an important part of the ownership calculation. A Level 2 charger can replenish the battery overnight on Subaru’s estimate, while Level 1 adds range more slowly. Consider your typical daily mileage and whether your home electrical setup can support a 240-volt charger before deciding which arrangement works for you.

Public fast charging and cold weather
The 2024 model’s claimed 10-to-80-percent DC fast-charge time is about 35 minutes, and Subaru says battery conditioning is intended to improve cold-weather charging. Those updates address charging friction, but they do not change the need to plan around the range you can count on for your own routes. The cited sources do not provide an independent cold-weather charging result.
What does standard all-wheel drive add to the trade-off?
Standard all-wheel drive is a defining part of the Solterra’s appeal. It may be relevant if you regularly drive on roads where you value power being available at all four wheels, but that feature alone does not establish that the Solterra is superior to another vehicle in every winter or traction situation. The decision is personal: weigh your actual traction needs against the range and charging compromises, rather than treating AWD as a substitute for evaluating either.

Who is the 2024 Solterra best suited to?
- A stronger fit: Drivers who can charge at home, cover most trips locally and place value on standard all-wheel drive.
- A harder fit: Drivers who make frequent long highway trips, need long stretches between stops or cannot conveniently charge at home.
- Worth checking before buying: Your normal daily distance, the length and frequency of highway trips, cold-weather use, home-charging feasibility and the value you place on AWD.
If you are comparing the Solterra with another EV, compare EPA range by trim alongside highway results with test speeds disclosed. Also compare the source and conditions behind charging-time claims, cold-weather behavior, home-charging requirements, standard equipment and the price basis. That keeps a manufacturer estimate, a road-test result and a historical MSRP from being mistaken for equivalent kinds of evidence.
